Car had frozen brakes and boot, they gave us a new car and was driving off within minutes. Pick up and drop off was perfect. Definitely recommend this company

The rental car located away from the airport, and have to wait for their shuttle service to pick you, not the most convenient option. The car received was not at the best condition, and was not clean up properly. Staffs services were just OK, can be nicer.

Rental experience was smooth and completely hassle-free. We received exactly what we booked — an older model 4x4 Duster (2022) with full insurance — in excellent condition and equipped with studded tires, which proved extremely useful just a day after record snowfall for late October. The car also had a built-in GPS, though I preferred using Google Maps.

The return process was equally quick and straightforward. My only small remark is that the receptionist could have shown a bit more enthusiasm, but perhaps that’s just part of Iceland’s famously cool charm.

Overall, I definitely recommend this rental company.

From pick up to drop off, everything was so perfect and smooth. The car that I got was in great condition. Also, shuttle service to the airport was cool. The greatest thing was the price. Lava car rental price was unbeatable compare to other car rental companies.

Booked a Mitsubishi Eclipse for 12 days and paid for all the extras which we highly recommend. Pick up/drop off at the airport was good with quick processing time at the offices. The car was great; just a couple of niggles which should have been checked before assigning the car. One of the front headlights didn’t work and the back window wiper just smeared the surface! The service prior to and check in on the first day was excellent as well as providing helpful driving guides, discount fobs for fuel and vouchers for Costa. Highly recommend and would definitely use again.

The car was clean and, as far as I can tell, in perfect condition. Pick-up and return went smoothly.

They asked me for 100€ because at the return of the car, even though I had already spent an exorbitant amount even for full insurance, there were crumbs in the back seats. With three children in 10 ring road days I challenge anyone. I asked them to give it to me to take it to be cleaned but they refused and wanted the money without justification. After an hour of my complaints they decided to give me a bit of a discount and ask for 50. A serious company checks the car on return along with the renter does not just show up with pos in hand asking for money. I would not recommend it.

Absolutely *do not* use this company. If anything goes wrong—and it will—they will completely ignore you. There is **never** any management on-site or available, and no one takes responsibility for anything.

We rented a camper that had a broken heater. They *promised* to send a replacement since we were nearly two hours away. Guess what? No one ever showed up. No one answered our repeated calls. We had to drive all the way back to them ourselves—only to be given another camper with *the same* heater issue and a third camper with **unsafe, poorly serviced tires** unknown to us.

We weren’t told to check the tires, and why would we? That’s their job. But two tires blew out while we were stranded in a remote area. We called for help, and once again—**radio silence**. They said they’d send a tow truck. They didn’t. We were left to figure it all out ourselves, pay for everything out of pocket—towing, repairs, the whole thing.

This company is beyond incompetent—**zero accountability, zero service, and zero concern for customer safety.** It was a nightmare from start to finish. Stay far away.

Very easy pick-off and drop-off process. I rented a Dacia Duster (2022) 4x4 and I felt very secure driving it. The staff at the rental office was friendly and very informative. I can highly recommend Lava Car Rental

We rented a Mitsubishi Eclipse from Lava Car Rental in August 2025. Within just three days, the car had three separate tire failures. This clearly proves the vehicle was handed over in an unsafe condition.

The consequences were serious:
* Life-threatening risk for my family and me.
* Significant disruption and stress during our vacation.
* Financial loss for repeated tire repairs.

Despite multiple emails and a formal complaint, the company has not provided reimbursement, explanation, or compensation. Their only reply was a generic statement that the case “is in progress”. Nothing has been resolved.

This shows a lack of responsibility and customer care. I have escalated the case to the Icelandic Consumer Agency.

My advice: Avoid Lava Car Rental – safety and accountability are not guaranteed.

My car had a crash in front driver eyes zone. Lava car said that is normal in island... i'm disagree...all de road trip we had to saw the crash... i want a comensation

They always informed us in advance, what we have to do (by pick up, and returning the car) and everything was exactly so, how they wrote! They picked us up in airport after a couple of minutes and took us to the garage. Not even 5 minutes later, we could drive away with the rented car. To drop the car was exactly same easy! I think we didn’t spend more then 10 minutes in the office!
The car (Dacia Duster 4x4) was in a perfect condition. We got also some chip with the car-key, and we could fill the tank cheaper with them!
I‘m sure, when we go back to Island (and we will soon), I rent the car again from them!

We spent 2 1/2 weeks in Iceland and we had that wonderful RAV4 from Lava. It turned out to be the ideal 4x4 for the island. The experience with Lava was super easy, never had such a simple drop-off before. A nice benchmark for other rental companies.

Excellent car rental. They pick you up promptly at the airport. No long lines. We got a free upgrade to a Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross S-AWC. A fantastic car. In short, highly recommended and not too expensive.
