Blue Car Rental made our Iceland trip…
Blue Car Rental made our Iceland trip sparkle! Picked up a shiny, zippy car at Keflavik in 5 mins—staff were so friendly, even gave us quick road-trip tips. Drove the Golden Circle with zero hiccups; the car felt safe and snappy. Super easy drop-off too! 10/10, our Iceland adventure wouldn’t have been half as fun without them.
It was a great experience overall
It was a great experience overall — the pickup and return processes were fast and smooth. I rented a new Dacia Duster for a week and really enjoyed driving it. I was initially worried they might inspect every tiny detail upon return just to find an excuse to charge extra, but that wasn’t the case at all. Everything was handled efficiently and pleasantly. I’d definitely rent from them again.
Travelers beware
Travelers beware! Do not plan on driving to the front of the airport to pick up or drop off friends or family because you WILL get a hefty fine. Apparently, if you are in this area for a STRICT greater than 5 minutes, even if only to drive up and pick up at curbside, you will pay an exorbitant fine. We picked up a car rental and drove to the front to gather the rest of our family with 3 kids and two adults dragging luggage to the pick up area. Trying to arrange the luggage in the car and adjust the rental car seats, set the GPS apparently took exactly 12 minutes and the rental car company was sent our "parking fine" plus "admin charges" totaling close to $50 USD. This is clearly a scam aimed at visitors. Apparently the camera starts the clock upon entering the area and never mind if it takes you a few minutes to wait for cars around you to pass, to visually find your passengers who are waiting, to find your way around if you are new to the area, to load your car, adjust the luggage for safety, set your gps before driving. If it takes you more than 5 minutes, the clock is ticking and you pay per minute, no if ands or buts about it. Customer service is nill at this place, refusing to budge and accusing us of "parking" despite our request for the airport parking or security to actually check the cameras or even check with the car rental (Blue, where we JUST drove from their lot) to verify that we didn't park and instead, came straight to the front of the airport, curbside to pick up our family and luggage. Apparently, none of that matters to this airport because they need to charge you as much as they can, end of story. I would not recommend visiting this country, honestly. We found the same type of unfriendly and rather blunt "take it or leave it" type attitude from many businesses in Reykjavik during our stay that it became very apparent that customer service is not something that is emphasized in businesses on this island. Rather, there is a need to find a way to squeeze as much money out of visitors whilst the prices for everything in this country is already astronomical.

Great service and good advice along the trip
Terrible from start to finish!
Very disappointing experience. We travel frequently around the world and have rented many vehicles over the years, and this was by far the worst car we have ever hired.
The vehicle we were given was clearly not in good condition and had multiple issues. It had incredibly high mileage on the clock. The gearbox needs attention, as it made a noticeable noise every time we shifted into second gear. The car was also pulling to the left while driving, which raised serious safety concerns.
The front windscreen wipers were smearing badly, making visibility poor in certain conditions, and the rear wiper was split and hanging off entirely. For what they charge for car hire, they should change wipers between every single customer!
On top of that, the oil management light came on within the first few days of the rental, which was very worrying.
We ended up driving around 1,500 km during our trip, and while we did not report the issues at the time, this was only because we had a very tight schedule travelling around the island. The last thing we wanted was to waste valuable time trying to arrange a replacement vehicle or deal with repairs mid-trip.
Another frustrating point - do not rely on the information provided about transport. We were told there is a shuttle bus from the airport to the rental location, but this simply is not true. In reality, it’s about a 1 km walk. Dragging suitcases through the snow to and from the pick-up/drop-off point is not a great start or end to a trip.
What’s most disappointing is the lack of accountability afterward. Despite clearly outlining all of these issues, the company refused to properly reassess the situation and only offered what can only be described as a laughable goodwill refund of 2 days of rental (we hired it for 8 days) which we refused as it does not reflect the inconvenience or the condition of the car we were given.
Overall a very poor experience - not a company we would trust or use again.
Skip the Rental Car shuttle line , go to Blue
1. Skip the Rental Car shuttle line ( which was 20-30 minutes long.) Blue is a 3 block walk across the south parking lot.
2. Buy the full insurance package for no questions asked returns. (while I was on the island, there were reports of cracked windshields just from wind-blown gravel!)
3. my 4WD was just fine. I did not bother to check price v. my usual USA Hertz or Enterprise, but I might have save money.
Unacceptable Standard
Rented a car with Blue for 6 days recently. Collected the keys from the 'drop-box' at the Keflavik airport office and played hunt the car in the allocated parking area. On finding the car it had obviously had a hard life, large dent on one door, obviously another casualty of the wind. The car was generally quite dirty with lots of other minor scratches and I do appreciate the Icelandic weather can be brutal but unfortunately the inside did not get any better. Both front and rear seats were filthy. The inside had not seen any cleaning action for some time. Not acceptable. On starting the car there was a 'service/maintenance' message on the dash which stated it was overdue by 1200 km. Again not acceptable, as clearly whoever had moved the car from the Blue office would have seen the message. There was also a low tyre pressure warning sign illuminated. Now to be honest at this point I should have just gone back inside the office to sort the issues, but I was running late for a previously booked activity, cold and tired and just wanted to get to my hotel. I assumed I could sort it out at the Blue Reykjavik office. I stopped at the first garage to put air in the tyres, reset the pressure monitor, but after a few minutes it came back on. I emailed Blue later that day but just received a bland apology and no offer for them to exchange the vehicle for one that didn't need a service or was clean and tidy. The car cost over £400 for the 6 days with the insurance package. And yes I know Iceland is expensive. I rent cars all over Europe and had I paid $150 euro's at Bobs Bangor's, I wouldnt be bothered in the slightest. I specifically chose Blue as the local company and they had decent reviews. Next time I will choose one of the myriad other international rental companies at the airport who might actually provide a decent car for the price and if they make a mistake and a car is overlooked, put it right at the time. Very disappointing. The review has two stars as to be fair the car didnt break down and was great on fuel.
I had never rented a car abroad before
I had never rented a car abroad before, and I was very impressed by the wide variety of cars on offer and how simple the rental process was. I knew the total price right away. The actual car pickup also exceeded my expectations. The staff were very helpful and explained everything to me. I can wholeheartedly recommend it.
The vehicle is very comfortable
The vehicle is very comfortable and clean, the overall service process is excellent, and the staff are very friendly toward foreign travelers.
Very good organization
Very good organization, quick response in case of problems, excellent system for picking up and dropping off the vehicle.
Booking experience was great

Blue Car Rental came in handy when our initial plan for the day changed last-minute. They were clear with answering our questions and flexible to meet our needs. The car was clean and in good condition.
Overall
Overall, it was a great experience renting a car for my first time. It was a simple and easy process. I only had to give it 4 stars instead of 5 because the car would not go into 4wd. I did not learn that until I needed 4wd on the snow covered highways. I ended up using the manual car to put it in 2nd gear and get myself out after being stuck for a while. I had to drift the car in a fish tail motion in order to go down the road that also had opposite direction traffic stuck as well.
So, in all I was pretty stressed from it not going into 4wd. I wish I checked the 4wd before leaving the rental lot.
Another note on good customer service...
When I arrived and picked up the car, all the dashboard error lights and code messages were going off. So I talked to the guy in the office and he took a look at the car and had the mechanics look at it. He came to me and said the car is fine to drive, but I can take another rental car if I wanted to... It would just be an older model car. Which I don't mind, but if the car was fine to drive than I didn't want to bother him to do all the computer work to switch me cars.
In return, he gave me a wifi transmitter box to have wifi wherever we go! It was very cool.
Anyways, yeah great customer service, easy process, I just wish I didn't have to stress out about the 4wd not working. I'm sure if I did get stuck, they would have helped me out very quickly.
Thanks!
The most fun experience driving while staying safe in Iceland!
After doing a thorough research of car rentals in Iceland, BlueCar stood out for me from the reviews - and I can only confirm what I’ve read.
The whole experience was seamless, from the booking, through the pick-up, to the end, everything was well described and transparent. To feel comfortable, we decided to take the full insurance (and road assistance service) and it was the best decision. Fortunately, nothing happened during our trip but the weather can be so unpredictable that I would recommend for everyone to go for this option (and cars stuck on the side of the road are a common thing in the winter from what we saw).
We booked the “used” 4x4 model and it was one of the most fun experience driving a car! The car got us through ice, rain and snow safely thanks to the studded tires (and our careful driving, of course :)) that are automatically part of the rental during the winter times 👍🏻
If we ever return to Iceland, BlueCar will be a sure choice ☺️ highly recommended!
Never had an easier rental experience

Car rental April 2025
Very easy pick up at Keflavik airport using contactless pickup, car was easy to find and in good condition and clean. Had to pump the tyre once but otherwise a perfect little car for my first trip to Iceland. Will recommend!
Excellent
Reliable, fast, flexible and problem-free service.
The online booking and pick-up were both extremely quick and easy. Thank you!
