I missed the online check-in because I didn’t check my spam folder in time, which was entirely my mistake, but the staff were very helpful and understanding. Valid debit card refused, no refund, no help
I had a prepaid booking at Locauto Alghero Airport (made through Discover Cars) and was refused the car at the desk. I came with my driving licence and a valid physical Visa/Mastercard debit card in my own name. The staff refused it only because the card number isn't printed/embossed on it.
This requirement is not in Locauto's published terms. Your own Special Rental Conditions state that Visa, Mastercard, Amex and Union Pay credit and debit cards are accepted, and say nothing about printed or embossed numbers. Nobody could explain how a printed number makes a card more valid.
To solve it on the spot, I asked to move the reservation to my girlfriend's name. She was with me, had her licence and a debit card in her name with a printed number, so she met even the desk's own rule. The staff refused that too. I lost my booking and had to find another car at extra cost.
Warning to other travellers: many modern cards no longer have raised or printed numbers. If yours doesn't, call Locauto Alghero before you travel. Don't assume the card rules on their website are the ones the desk will apply.

Rental procedures require a card with visible, printed numbers because cards without physical digits are often linked to virtual app accounts or single-use dynamic card numbers. These types of accounts do not meet standard rental security requirements or allow us to secure the necessary deposit pre-authorization for the vehicle.Regarding transferring the reservation, bookings made through third-party brokers (such as Discover Cars) must match the primary driver named on the original voucher, which prevents our station staff from changing the lead driver name directly at the counter.
We regret the inconvenience and frustration this caused during your trip. We take your comments seriously and will share your feedback with our team to help improve the clarity of our communication regarding card requirements before pickup.
We hope to have another opportunity to regain your trust.
