This was our first Shearings trip and we were impressed with the standard of coaches and having alcoholic drinks on board! Marco, our coach driver was attentive with a great sense of humour. However... See more

First time venturing on a coach holiday, so a bit apprehensive!
Decided to speak to Representative rather than book on line.
Their staff member (sorry haven't got his name) was excellent.
Put my mind at rest as answered all my questions fully and was helpful.

First of all, I would like to congratulate our driver, Mike, who took us smoothly and considerately to our destination, The Esplanade Hotel, in Paignton, Devon. En-route he did the regular stop, and later in the journey, asked if we wanted a 2nd stop, but everyone said no, we just wanted to get there.
I think, if it wasn't for him, the whole trip would have been a disaster. He gets a gold medal from us.
However, as soon as we got into the hotel, it was the start of a downward journey. Our room was minute, just about able to fit a double bed in and 1 bedside cabinet. When you went to the toilet/shower, you tried to open the door, but you couldn't get into it as the bed was in the way. We had to move the bed to get in, and there, under the bed was open coffee and tea wrappers, pen's, tissues etc, the room had been cleaned only superficially, dust and dirt were on the surfaces.
We asked to change rooms, as the ground floor room was actually up 3 stairs, so my mobility scooter had to be carried up these. But the hotel said there were no other rooms available, they were not particularly helpful, nor it seemed sympathetic. Both Shearings and the hotel had been advised of my mobility issues, and my claustrophobia which prevents me using the lift, and stairs are a big challenge to me.
The hotel had nowhere to sit outside to take advantage of bring opposite the beach.
The staff were friendly and helpful.
The food: The breakfasts
weren't too bad at all, but the evening meals were terrible.
The soup tasted like just water. The Fish and Chips was the cheapest budget meal you can find, it was like it was reconstituted fish, not an actual real fish, grey in colour and rock hard.
Once there, we found the hotel the place had been used for housing asylum seekers 2 months beforehand and now in addition to accepting Shearings guests, also accommodates homeless people.
Although I have nothing against homeless people and sympathise with their plight, I don't think it is acceptable to have them staying in the same hotel as people who are paying a vast amount of money to stay.
They were very friendly, but also bringing in people with them that were not staying in the hotel, which was not a comfortable situation.
Also, the noise that was coming from some of the rooms kept us awake. They were playing football and loud music, which prevented us from getting a decent nights sleep.
I have never been on a Shearings holiday before and given this experience, I will be most unlikely to use them again.

The young girl I spoke to on the phone was really helpful and pleasant

Booked by phone with shearings who were very helpful and keen to ensure all queries were answered. Really enjoyed the holiday which was to holy island and the Northumberland coast. Went to a variety of places. Pat the driver for the main coach was fantastic. Very keen to ensure we all had an excellent holiday and where appropriate swopped the places round some days. He couldn't have been more helpful and was very good at explaining the best sites to see and how to get there. We stayed at the leonardo hotel, Newcastle. The bedroom was lovely and very spacious and clean, the staff couldn't do enough to help. Food was nothing fancy but satisfactory. Would definitely stay again. Only problem was on the feeder coach coming into the interchange at skelton lake. I'm not sure if he was new (he got a bit lost at selby) but the driver didn't explain the procedure when we arrived there so this caused quite a bit of confusion.Hence the four stars.

Bullet point review:
GOOD STUFF
1. Hotel was utterly fantastic. Slaley Hall was a spa with multiple golf courses and food and service to match.
2. Tour itinerary was excellent - Seahouses, Farne Islands boat trip (puffins), Hexham (roman ruins and Hadrian's Wall), and Alnwick Castle and town.
3. Driver Michael was very agreeable and pleasant with personal greetings each day and was very patient and considerate with the older oldies.
NOT SO GOOD
4. The pick-up route included changing vehicles four times, eight stop-offs to pick up passengers, and a circuitous route from East Anglia on the east coast to Northumberland also on the east coast via Rugby in Warwickshire which is nearly in Wales.
5. Hotel buffet breakfast was excellent. Dinner was also excellent but very slow taking over an hour and a half to deliver two courses. Perfectly appropriate for a posh family gathering or date night but an interminable wait for a gaggle of tired coach-tourers gagging for some fodder.
6. The Home Connect service was not available to us as we live 13 miles from the pick-up point and the top limit for this service is 10 miles. This means (apart from an Orkney trip previously booked before realising this) this will be our last trip with Shearings. As we've been loyal customers with Shearings and Leger since 1997 travelling over 30 times with them this seems an unfortunately minor and petty way to end our relationship. Yes, we've been dumped. I shall cry on my pillow tonight...
SUMMARY
7. A really good little short tour. Lots of variety and lots to see and do with a sublimely good hotel to return to every day. Recommended.

Went to Scarborough 1st June 2026. Norbreck Hotel for Solo travellers. Because it was for Solo's you would have thought that we would both get double rooms especially after paying over £660. each for 5 days. On arriving l had a double room and my friend had a single room which was very embarrassing. The food at the Hotel was not brilliant, cold most of the time. The breakfast - The amount of bacon put out was enough for an army, god knows how old it was underneath. Choice of 5 eggs (fried). the best thing was the coffee machine for a decent coffee. Excursion to York ok, although 1 day you had to pay £16.50 to go to Bridlington. Getting back at 5.30 with dinner at 6, was too late getting back, then we had to wait for everyone to come down before we got served. Some people did'nt come down till 6.30 + stupid idea. So not very happy with this holiday at all.

Went to Ostend with Shearings in May.
The hotel we stayed at, staff were very rude, food was a set meal, so if you didn't like something, then you went without. I am lactose intolerant and I was told to let the staff at the hotel know, they weren't interested.
Only had one member of staff on our coach as the other was off sick.
Bruges was beautiful but our driver gave us no information apart from 'go over the bridge and follow your nose '.
2nd trip was to Veurne and coastal tour, what a complete pointless trip, we were back at the hotel by 1.30 even though it had not been advertised as a half day trip.
3rd day we stayed in Ostend. We asked the receptionist the way to the market, she told us to 'Google' it.
This was our first coach trip with Shearings and will definitely be our last with them.
We have complained but as yet no response

Unfortunately, an unexpected need for an eye operation meant that we would have been unable to go on the originally booked holiday. The Shearings agent was very understanding and really helpful in finding an alternative solution for us.

We booked a weekend to take a trip on the Flying Scotsman. We chose to meet the party at the hotel in Blackpool, so we could extend our stay..
Firstly, the hotel was "tired" to say the least, our room had no hot water, there was brick dust on the widow sills where the aerial cable had been drilled through, this fed one of the two TV's in the room, neither of which worked. We were given another room, which was an improvement, in that we had warm water. The food was more aligned to that of a corner cafe. On to the journey to Bury to catch the train. The driver did not impress me, in that he had organised a quiz to pass the time, 31 lengthy questions regarding the Flying Scotsman, which was a good thought, but he chose to conduct it while he was driving, not sure how he did that and drive at the same time.He also informed us that Shearings do not own the vehicles or employ the drivers, as such. We were very disappointed in this part of our weekend, which cost over £500. The staff at the hotel were brilliant, they can only work with what they have.
We will not be using this company again.

Getting more like RYAN AIR...
Advertise a price for a holiday they add on transfer fee of £30 per person for a pick up 4 miles away, then charge for a seat on the coach. Next thing they'll be charging to use the toilet.
Last time we will be going with them even though over the years we have travelled all over Europe with Shearings, no more though. Just seen the reply from Shearings, mentioned "reserved seating", we did not reserve any seats, they were the last two seats available on the coach, so we had absolutely no choice as to where we would be sat.

It wasn’t too bad doing the booking online but still need to ring and confirm a couple of things I am not sure of, hence the deduction of a star. Apart from my own doubts it was a relatively easy process. Received confirmation by email very promptly.
