Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 70 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Consumers consistently explain that getting necessary medical and dental claims approved is a major uphill battle because the business routinely denies essential coverage. Many individuals feel entirely forced to fight through endless paperwork and formal appeals just to receive the basic benefits they were originally promised. Some reviewers were not happy with the customer service, noting that getting transferred repeatedly and dealing with unhelpful staff is extremely frustrating. People also mentioned dealing with unexpected financial surprises, such as sharply rising monthly premiums and steep out-of-pocket expenses for routine care.

Horrible Company and subsidiaries

If I could give zero stars I would. I have an indemnity policy through UHC that is underwritten by Golden Rule Insurance, a subsidiary of UHC. By far the worst company I have ever had to deal with for healthcare coverage. I knew the policy was limited but because I am retired and not 65 yet, the choices of affordable health insurance are slim. The customer service is horrible and I have even had a customer service rep hang up on me because I asked a question she could not answer. The website almost never works and provides little information, yet in calling customer service, it always directs you to the God awful website. It has been a fight to get them to pay the limited benefits that are due under the policy. But they are never late in taking my premium. Don't let this company fool you, they are not at all about "healthcare" they are all about profit. Their Medicare Advantage through AARP is also horrible, we switched my husband to another provider after a year of banging our heads against the wall with UHC.

Poor treatment and organization

I decided to use them for my supplemental health care and have found them to be terrible. I filed a si8mple claim for eyeglasses and frames. That has been a nightmare. After several emails asking if they received it and never received an answer. I filed online and three weeks later they sent me a letter that the filing was declined as I did not provide a receipt. I bought the stuff online and had an online receipt showing I paid with a credit card and I sent that to them with the original filing. So I sent them the Receipt again with the PAID portion highlighted and also sent my Report of payment from my credit card company last week. I looked in their website to find if they received it and it shows nothing just like the last time. Also, their website is horribly slow, you have to log in twice to find some information and if you try to speak to someone online you get a robot that cannot answer your questions. This outfit is terrible but it is probably because it is due to be owned by AARP which is a very bad organization also.

Incompetent? Or Engineered Inefficiency?

As a therapist I bill many insurance companies. United Healthcare is consistently the most difficult to work with and has been for at least the last decade. Their customer service representatives do their best, but the system they work with is so inefficient, at least when it comes to paying claims, that it seems to be purposeful. Maybe it’s not, maybe it’s pure incompetence. But if saying a company is inept is the most generous view, well then what does that tell you.

I have medicare and a supplemental plan through AARP United Health. I have had a hip replacement, monthly biologic infusions, xrays, hospital stays, CTs, and have no out of pocket expenses other than my premium. If I had coverage questions the staff has been informative and helpful .

Absolute third-world healthcare at…

Absolute third-world healthcare at first-world prices.

Actually receiving healthcare from UHC is an unmitigated disaster. Everything happens through UnitedHealthcare's online portal---a portal that doesn't work. UnitedHealthcare's online technology is abysmal. The online portal is central to booking and receiving healthcare, and it next to never works. No joke.

Common issues are that it will send old and outdated information to 3rd-party healthcare providers, the portal will crash, and the integrations with 3rd-party providers don't work, don't connect, or also crash.

I've attempted to work with UnitedHealthcare's technical support team to address these technical problems, and they are just clueless, and to the best of my knowledge, I'm 99% sure they're overseas. Imagine the "technical support" you get from that budget laptop you purchased at Walmart, and that's who UnitedHealthcare has managing their technology.

As for the support staff at UnitedHealthcare themselves, they're grossly undertrained. I've spoken to multiple UHC staff, and they don't even know their primary providers offered through the UHC portal; for example, the lady I talked to today didn't even know the telehealth provider the UHC website is sending all their patients to. Her solution was (no joke): "don't use the UHC online portal because it doesn't work, and instead download the Apps on your iPhone for the 3rd party providers." This was said to me by an employee of UHC. ...I wish Yelp would allow me to use the eye-rolling emoji because I'd place it right here.

I've had multiple healthcare insurance companies during my career, and I rank UHC far, FAR below Anthem, Cigna, and Kaiser Permanente.

If you're a UHC customer or thinking of becoming one, just run away...Literally: go anywhere else. Healthcare is useless if you can't even book care, and none of the technology UHC employs works.

Back in early October I had tooth pain

Back in early October I had tooth pain. Went to the dentist and he told me I needed the truth either extracted or a crown. I told him I had a $2,000 limit on my dental plan with United healthcare. So he went to the office and called United healthcare and they said they would cover the crown. When he was in the office I called United healthcare dental and they told me they would cover the crown. The following Monday I went for the molds and the prep work for a crown and after they did all the work the billing person said United healthcare is denying my claim saying I have another dental plan. I had to call United healthcare again to tell them that that was a cobra plan and had expired in March of 2021. So again I asked if I was covered. They told me yes. United healthcare gave me a Thanksgiving present. I got a letter from them denying my claim. I've spent about 20 hours on the phone with my personal representative at United healthcare and with the dental plan people and I got a different story from every single person. They tell me that they can't accept an electronic transmission of the x-rays to them. They a hard copy sent by US mail. So I called the dentist office and they printed out from the digital X-ray and sent the form in. Then they claimed that they didn't accept Xerox copies of x-rays. And this thing with the x-rays has changed back and forth depending on who I talk to there they're doing the runaround from the beginning they don't want to pay a penny. That has been their intent since the beginning. Well I'm switching companies for my Medicare advantage because they really are terrible and I don't trust them. You don't know who to believe there. Play United healthcare soccer continues my personal navigator Melissa at United healthcare called back to say that all they're waiting for is The narrative of my dentist. Well my dentist is sent to the narrative twice by United States postal service and on their electronic filing. The supervisor at the dental part told me yesterday that they had received it. They have denied my claim for times in the last 10 days. So you don't know who to believe at United healthcare.

After days and days of trying to get this resolved they finally paid the claim.

Now in the new year I need a root canal and another crown and they're denying it saying that I used up my benefits. Well according to my plan I'm supposed to get $2,000 on January 1st.

On January 7th I had to go in for emergency root canal and going back on the 18th for the crown.

When all my medical issues are done I am switching companies because this company does not care about its members

Now dental says root canal is not covered. Also only one crow every five years.

Well friend had root canal last month. Same plan and they paid.

People at this company lie and cheat. They do anything not to pay
Talk tonight insurance broker and she says she gets lots of complaints about United healthcare dental program and she told me I should switch to Aetna or to anthem

Talk to 5 different people get five different answers. That doesn't know what they are doing

As of January 13th my dental office called them and said they were covered both the crown and the root canal.

So who's telling the truth.

I don't think United healthcare knows what the truth is

Today I get a letter saying they're going to cover the new crown. Well their customer service people were wrong they told me I would only get one crown every 5 years so who knows what to believe. The dental office also called them to tell them that they would cover both the crown and the root canal. I'll believe it when I see it I'll be fighting this until the day I die

I went to get my hearing test today and they ordered a new hearing aid and we were going to see what kind of problems I want to have with a hearing department. 2 years ago I had problem after problem with the people that they had handling the hearing.

If you can don't sign up for United healthcare cuz their customer service stinks

United Healthcare Doesn't Care

United Healthcare, Doesn't Care about mental health. They give you 100+ provider and say they are ALL available to help. Only 5% are available and you must waste your life going through he bad info they force on you. This is what happens when no one cares about other people.

Steven Anderson

I had the opportunity to finish my sign up with Steven Anderson in Kansas. He was so kind and enthusiastic. You would have though he was paid $150.00 an hour. Which he should. If everyone I talk to on the phone that, of course I don't know, would be that friendly; that should be the pay for that job. He deserves special recognition, a raise, and maternity leave. His wife had surgery!! Good job hiring him. Sincerely, Diane M. Lange

lack of help

I needed to talk to someone about a bill that was charged to me twice. I sent an e-mail and they finally responded and said to call them. I called several times only to hear "your call will be answered in 10 minutes" after waiting 45 minutes each time I called. I need a company who cares enough to help me.

Thought it would cost me less money; I was Wrong

I thought AARP's Medicare Advantage would pay the 20% that medicare does not pay. Wrong! It uses United Healthcare who took over my Medicare account, it cost me $115 a year, my doctor visits were $35 and my physical therapy went from $1,200 a year to $1,900 a year. I switched to NY Humana and now there is no cost per year, Doctor visits are $0 and my therapy is back to $1.200. Of course any hospital stays will have a huge deductible, but I am basically healthy, and all the money I am saving from UH I move into my personal "Medical" savings account at my bank. Through my life I have had and tried to trust two insurance companies; Aetna and United Healthcare; they both are abject failures at fair coverage and fair pay outs, and I wish I could forget the anxiety causing phone calls to these companies. It is like the pay out money is coming out of the agents pockets.

Apparently UHC pays off AARP to endorse…

Apparently UHC pays off AARP to endorse their Medicare Advantage programs. Their customer service function exists in name only. At last count 15 calls over the space of 20 days and just in a hampster wheel between what they laughingly call "customer service" and "sales" ( the theory being we disenrolled you without your permission so rather than fix the problem we created we'll sell you something new to get more commissions and pay offs from AARP ! ). They have an " escation" department but they report it isn't open but they can't tell you why it is closed; if/when it will reopen; nor a phone number for said department. Guessing that department is swamped as there is no other functioning customer service department. I hired an attorney to sue them for mail fraud and damages I incurred because of their ineptness. I have, of course, reported this inept and unresponsive underwriter to the state insurance commissioner; the BBB; and the US Attorneys office. Guessing that will accomplish nothing as these sources are also likely bought and paid for like AARP. Buyer be very aware.
