Enjoyed 5 Day Pastel Challenge
5 day Pastel Challenge organized by Dan from Unison Colour led by Stephen Fuller was amazing. He guided us through the painting and answered our queries in q & a. It boosted my confidence in picking pastels as a medium for painting.
Unison’s soft pastels are a joy to use
Unison’s soft pastels are a joy to use, buttery and highly pigmented. They are expensive, but the free 5 day pastel challenge recently aired was led by an excellent advocate artist (Stephen Fuller) and provided extremely useful tuition, tips and advice for getting the best out of them. Having also done previous, just as helpful, challenges and becoming a devout convert to these pastels I have gradually built up my colour range - I admit I wait for sales (I’m retired) but Unison pastels win out every time.
A really great customer experience from this small company!
I was really grateful for this opportunity to take part in a pastel painting challenge and to receive input and guidance from one of Unison Pastel’s associate artists. Stephen Fuller led us through the stages of the Autumn Rains challenge with a short video each day, offering tasks to help us build up our landscape painting.
Stephen used blending as a technique to create a moody, rainy sky and mist in the hills, and explained his process really well. He is also a physicist and gave clear explanations about using colour and tone to create perspective and depth as well as atmosphere.
What I also loved about the challenge was the online community, in which Unison and the artist both participated regularly, responding directly to each person’s post, and answering questions. Stephen made detailed and constructive comments on every participant’s posts and photos - and I can see that a week after the challenge he is still responding to people who started the challenge later. There were also Q&A sessions every evening, so I felt very much part of a learning group and a community during this process.
It would be true to say that using Unison soft pastels would always be my choice, as they are so lovely to work with - and it was great to learn new ways to use them in this challenge.
All in all a great opportunity, and an experience which I thoroughly enjoyed. Many thanks to Unison Colour for offering this great (and free!) experience and to Stephen Fuller for his wonderful tuition and encouragement.
Excellent Autumn Rains 5 day challenge
Thank you so much Unisons and Stephen Fuller for putting on another excellent 5 day challenge. I bought the dedicated set of half pastels which was great and delivered promptly by Unisons.
I loved the subject and found Stephen’s loose way of working inspirational. Stephen was so responsive, providing positive feedback on everyone’s paintings. His Q&A sessions were also so interesting and informative. I loved every minute of it and feel sad that it’s over.
However I’m so happy that this week has re fired my enthusiasm for pastel painting
5 day pastel challenge
I really enjoyed participating in this event. The scene is different from my usual subjects and I did one painting on Canson MiTeinte paper which I haven’t used before. I prefer it to my usual pastelmat because it’s easier for blending. Stephen demonstrated and taught really well and the recordings allowed me to watch several times and pick up on all the details. He’s very encouraging
I have learnt so much
In the scheme of things Unison is a relatively small company making wonderful pastels, they also encourage budding and accomplished artists by providing tutorials, mostly for a fee, but occasionally for free. The free tutorials are brilliant, they tend to be delivered in small achievable chunks, as this one was, which means that small baby steps really make you understand what you are doing. Stephen Fuller was the most helpful, enthusiastic and supportive tutor , he worked very hard over the week by answering virtually all of the questions raised in a patient and constructive way, his wacky sense of humour lightened the atmosphere considerably and made him very approachable, 10/10 for this wonderful week. Thank you Stephen and thank you Unison for making this possible.
The fact that Unison makes these 5 day challenges a growth experience.
The fact that Unison makes these 5 day challenges available to artists and prospective artists alike, around the world, is wonderful. I just completed the second one and I’m once again delighted with the results.
Stephen Fuller makes beautiful art, but beyond that I admire his teaching ability. He broke each day into a simple, short, but chock full segments that helped everyone cross the finishing line with a painting to be happy with at the least, but proud of at best.
My sincere thanks to both Unison and Stephen.
5 Day Soft Pastel Challenge - great fun!
I took part in a 5 Day Soft Pastel Art Challenge organised via Unison Colour. It was an excellent tutorial by the Associate Artist, Stephen Fuller. It was very well organised, clear instructions via email and the relevant Facebook Group page. I would highly recommend not only the Challenges but also Unison's soft pastels, which are quality and a vast range of beautiful colours to suit every subject you wish to paint.
The experience was great
The experience was great. Stephen explained things so well, adding scientific theory that made sense, informing us clearly of which colours he was using at every point and was able, because it was a fairly simple painting, to take things slowly. He was extremely generous with his time; giving very helpful tips in the videos, full answers in the Q &A’s and very encouraging comments on the Facebook page. Technically, (I don’t know whether Unison have improved the Facebook group organisation, or whether I’m getting the hang of the Challenges now) I found it easy to know where to look for the day’s sessions and there were no problems with transmissions. It’s clear a lot of generosity and thought went into this Challenge. Thank you Unison!
Another great challenge
This was very well organized and communicated. Stephen Fuller was exceptional with providing feedback and commenting on everyone’s individual progress. I’ve participated in two other challenges, which were all very informative and developed my skills, but in this challenge Stephen went over and above in ensuring he commented on all posts.

I love Unison pastels and I love the opportunity of doing these free 5 day couses as they give you an opportunity to try the different tutors different styles & ways of using the pastels. Its really interesting - thank you.

Once again Unison provided an unusual pastel challenge which I throughly enjoyed. This was a first for me using the dark colours in the sky. I bought the pastel set of colours that the artist had used. I knew I wouldn't have the range of dark colours in my pastels. It was well worth the purchase. Unison pastels make pastel painting so easy, the colours are true and blend well. Their pastels are well packaged in sturdy attractive boxes and always arrive safely. I can highly recommend Unison Pastels.

The Q and A sessions were the most informative and enjoyable of all the 5 day challenges I have done.
Thank you Unison for all the info sent out following questions and for putting this 5 day challenge out for free.

Fantastic 5 day workshop / challenge. Bite sized enough to squeeze into your day and learn loads. Great teacher - highly recommended
Having being burnt by Domestika in a scam I was very tentative about on-line learning. This has restored my faith there are good companies and platforms out there

I have used Unison Colour pastels for many years and still they never disappoint. They are always top quality. Their blogs and art challenges are also superb. They are a great company for artists.
Loved this workshop with Julie Skoda
Loved this workshop with Julie Skoda. The incredible thing about art in all its formats is that you never stop learning. This was no exception. Thank-you Julie and unison. I just love your pastels and never get tired of using them,
Love their pastels & commitment to learning
Just finished a fantastic workshop with Julie Skoda using a new looser style of pastel painting. Great experience enhanced by trialing the pastel academy from Unison. I'll certainly look for more courses in the Academy.
My only suggestion is for Unison & Julie to encourage more student participation/interaction in the Discussion Feed. Maybe it's the unfamiliar platform (change from Facebook) but I would have liked to interact more during the class. It would be nice to 'see' the other students during the Zoom Q & A, which might also encourage more interaction. The zoom QA seemed to be a bit too short.
Overall though a great experience and lots was learned.
