Good customer service, but...

It is an inconvenient that you cannot chose the seats for a first-class trip with the "seats choice" option paid for. You have to contact the carrier (Austrian Rail in my case) which is very slow in answering emails. Being in USA contact by phone is pretty difficult.

We understand how this can feel inconvenient, especially for a first-class journey where seat expectations are higher. Note that passengers can select only seat preferences during booking, and the system then assigns seats automatically based on availability. For OBB trains, specific seat selection is not available, as seating is managed according to the rail operator’s allocation rules - which we follow as part of their booking system.

That said, once onboard, passengers can always check with the train staff for a possible seat change or swap, subject to availability.

To be digitally savy

We could not find the tickets for our return trip to Germany which were booked and paid for. No matter how much we searched the internet, they were very well hidden. And then we got the App. And then we found them. Not everybody is that technically efficient and it would be sensitive and kind to acknowledge that there are more direct and easier ways of booking; especially for the older generation. There are still plenty of us around, a lot of whom have the money and time to take holidays.

A travel agent did give me guidance on…

A travel agent did give me guidance on what to purchase - particularly the stations to use. Because I had that information I was able to locate my routes quickly. Otherwise it would have been quite difficult for me to figure out the best options. Then when I collected all the passport information and was ready to purchase, I received “cannot find an available booking agent try again later.” This occurred several times before I was finally able to buy the tickets.

Regarding seat selection, for Renfe service you booked, travelers can choose seat preferences during the booking process, while the actual seat assignment is made automatically by the rail operator based on availability. Unfortunately, specific seat selection is not available for Spain trains, and as a ticket distributor, we follow the policies and systems provided by the rail carrier.

If the assigned seats are not convenient, we recommend speaking with the onboard staff after boarding, as they may be able to assist with a seat change or swap, subject to availability.

I tried to cancel/change my trip

I had to cancel (or change) my trip. Warning: There is NO WAY to access your purchased trip from either the ticket or the website (using the purchase or ticket number). RailEurope has no phone number or access to discuss ticket exchange or cancellation. They list many, many articles about how to cancel or exchange, but putting them into action is impossible. Try other consolidators, unless you are absolutely certain of your travel dates

As a result, the trip will not be visible when logged into your current account. To access the booking and process any available after-sales actions, the traveler (Jessica) will need to create a Rail Europe account using the same email address that was used when the booking was made.

We also see that you've already submitted a service request to our support team. One of our representatives will review it and get back to you as soon as possible. In the meantime, if you have any additional information or questions, please feel free to reply directly to our team's response once received.

We can confirm that, according to the fare conditions, the Renfe trip referenced in your service request is eligible for exchanges and refunds before the train's departure. Once the booking is accessible through the correct account, any available change or cancellation options can be reviewed.

Admin fee exploitation

Applying an admin fee to every individual transaction rather than just one for the basket is a rip off. Wherever possible I'll use an alternative provider from now on.
