Parents Booking is so easy to use

Parents Booking is so easy to use and is highly customizable. I love the suggest bookings facility. I really makes thing easier. I also like that everything can be edited and times changed, especially as a disabled person with extremely limited mobility, I can leave extra time between appointments to get around

Totally stressful

Totally stressful, especially when you get the seconds counting down to confirm. The process is not that intuitive, but ok. You need to have a little tutorial on how to use it, on the page before you bool, which people can skip or read, as they wish!
And please can you stop asking just for positive feedback !

Good morning Marie,

I'm sorry to read from your review that this was a stressful experience, but I thank you for your comments - these will help us make the service better, especially as this is not a common one. It's definitely something to think about. I presume you'd have liked more than five minutes to consider the appointments our wizard had selected for you, and we can discuss increasing this internally.

There should have been a guide with pictures and arrows downloadable from the invite email you'll have been sent? It will have been in the last paragraph of the invite to book email. None the less, as much as I'd hope the Suggest Bookings for Me web page is as simple as clicking the teachers and pressing a button to have the wizard pick you the most efficient schedule, I'll certainly look into a tutorial or similar popping up in future.

Have a nice day :)

Will

It was shame that it only puts slots in your calendar one at a time, but that's a minor issue really.

Thanks so much for your review Claire. You're the second person to mention the ability to add the bookings to your calendar being an issue in as many days so I just wanted to say we'll look into this ASAP and by the next time you use us I hope this is exactly as you'd want. Have a lovely weekend.

It's not a very usable system --…

It's not a very usable system -- despite what it seems able to do, it doesn't actually put all the sessions in your calendar. If you ask it for an email, it doesn't acknowledge. It's not a bad system overall but it desperately needs someone who knows about design for humans to have a quick look at it. That would make a huge difference to how pleasant and easy it is to use.

Thanks for the response to my comment. First, it's great to see that the "Email your bookings" link is now working as intended.
Second, I hope the below is useful. I should say I've just done a quick pass through, and I'm not an accessibility expert so it would probably be worth getting an accessibility audit. Happy to chat about any of these issues if that would be useful.

Issues:
[the Accessibility issues mentioned here could be legal concerns under the 2010 Equality Act, so, as I said, it might be worth getting expert advice on whether these issues could prevent people accessing your service.]
*The links in the privacy policy are both "here", which is going to be read as "here" by a screen-reader, meaning people tabbing through links with a screen-reader may struggle to navigate the content.
*The tab-through on the dashboard etc works, but tabbing doesn't work in the pop ups, so if I want to (for example) ask for a translator, I can't do that using the keyboard because the tabbing stays in the background and doesn't move focus with the pop up opening.
* Text on the News page has low contrast between foreground and background (especially the pale blue on the green) and may be hard for some people to read.

General usability issues:
* "Add bookings to calendar" is misleading. The content implies that the bookings will be added to the calendar. In fact, for Google (I can't check the others), the system tries to put in a single ten-minute booking.
* "Request a translator" is mysterious. It doesn't tell you who your request is being sent to. It could be the school, it could be the government. You'd imagine it's the school but there's a separate link to contact them, so it's not obvious. (This could be fixed in the content by making it explicit who the request for a translator goes to)
* The "Request a translator" text box can be expanded but the frame beneath it doesn't expand, so after some expansion, the text box falls off the side of the pop up and part of the text is no longer visible. Adding text scrolls the box and you lose the "Send" and "Cancel" buttons. ESC doesn't close the box. (I wonder if people need to add much text to the box - it might be worth fixing this by making the text box non-expandable)
* The terms and conditions link leads to an advertisement page offering an online demo, not terms and conditions. (this is just the wrong link - terms and conditions can be accessed from other pages outwith the primary site so it just needs updated)
* There are two terms for the "Dashboard" page -- both "Dashboard" (as in the page you return to) and "My Event/Club bookings" which initially appears to be another page based on the button existing *on* the dashboard page, but when clicked, keeps you on the Dashboard page.
*The link to Netmedia's general privacy policy takes you to a Page Not Found (404) and your own Privacy notice was last updated in 2020.
* It would be worth reviewing the navigation between the different sites you have. Although there isn't an explicit message to say that you're going to a new site, the navigation seems to take the user to three separate sites, and it's currently not possible to get back to the original dashboard from the additional sites through the site navigation. The "Privacy Notice" page first takes you to another site, and if you click on the links at the top of that page (e.g. News) you end up at the third site, with no clear way to get back.
*I think your dashboard page could be improved by making it clear to users that "Suggest bookings for me" will allow users to specify the times they can manage. It's not obvious that this is the case on the dashboard and there's no alternative way to make bookings, so you need to click the link and hope that it will be okay. It probably doesn't help that the option to define times is under the fold on the page so not salient.
*Because you can't see when teachers are busy, if you can't get them at the times you want, you need to keep guessing when they might be available. I had to try four or five times putting in different times before it became clear that the teacher I was hoping to speak to was (probably) booked solidly at the end of the evening. If I'd been able to see when she was booked, I could have adapted one of my other bookings to try to get time with her, but I couldn't see and I didn't know if she was free at any of the times when she had another booking.

Good evening A Dicksinson.

Thanks very much for updating your review with an extremely detailed reply which gives lots more context. All of the points are helpful and valid. We do go out of our way to make the website as user-friendly and accessible as possible (I currently have our HTML designer updating our wraparound childcare booking calendar so it's easier to use for those with screen readers, for example), but this level of detail is extremely helpful. I hadn't noticed the Terms and Privacy Policy links were going to old/out of date web pages so that is the first thing I've had fixed today (it'll be correct in our next software update), but I'll work through the rest asap.

Just for your own peace of mind, the Request a Translator button is turned on and offered only by schools who have the ability to book translators (it doesn't go to the government). We work with thousands of schools but typically they'd explain how this works and the deadline for translator requests in the invite, so I'm sorry if that's not been made clear in your invite/instructions. Also, the "My Event/Club Bookings" button would refresh the Dashboard if you had these types of bookings - it takes you to a page listing these, for parents/schools who have perhaps events tickets, club sign-ups or breakfast/after-school type bookings. I recognise it would be better if it showed an error saying you have no bookings rather than refreshing the web page.

With all of this, please understand we're a small, Scottish family business who put every penny we make, apart from our meager salaries, back into development of the product. We're not a million or multi-million pound turnover company. We care deeply, but the product is growing fast and we've been concentrating on making sure the security and functionality required are of the utmost standard, so there are fraying edges around some less used pop-ups like Request a Translator, and less-used links as pointed out. We will continue to improve the product every day, as we always have, and I promise accessibility is at the front of our efforts.

Thanks again, and, as mentioned before, I hope you'll have a better experience next time, noting changes we've made by then and will be making far beyond your notes, with the singular goal of helping connect parents and teachers more easily and for the benefit of the students.

Best wishes,

Will
Director
