Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 44 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many people were dissatisfied with the service, citing frequent delays, cancellations, and a general lack of reliability, often leading to missed appointments or additional travel costs. Customers also found the staff to be rude, arrogant, and unprofessional, with some describing them as intimidating and unhelpful, especially regarding ticket issues and fines. The pricing was often considered very high, and issues with payment methods, including digital tickets not being accepted or systems failing, resulted in customers being unfairly fined. However, some customers also mentioned positive interactions with staff members who were helpful and provided excellent assistance, particularly for those with disabilities. A few other people also felt that some trains ran on time and that the staff were friendly.

We are measured in the end by how we deal with failure and disaster. The system failure on 2023-12-06, still
On going over 12 hours later was an opportunity to show leadership and strength.

There is still no news about train times. The app says “good service” right now. It took me two hours to get home, and that was only because I took an Uber after walking two miles between stations because station staff never mentioned a bus - probably because management failed to organise a replacement bus. The communication on this has been appalling. I’m used to a cancellation of at least one train a week at rush hour - I can cope with that, this was a catastrophic failure of management. Whatever engineering failure caused this is irrelevant - it is bad management

Late AGAIN

Late AGAIN, no accountably, no apology but take the money..!

Thought new trains would lead to an improved service and comfort, how ambitious was that thinking.

The worst rail network to date

The worst rail network to date. They recently introduced a new autumn schedule and they cant even follow that - always late every time. Its ok if you happen to be visiting Liverpool, but as a commuter, dont expect to rely on them. The train from Chester is suppose to leave at 21:00 and is always late leaving, the worst being 21:08.

MERSEYRAIL IS BROKEN

I commute 5 days a week using Merseyrail, I Pay almost £1000 a year for my ticket. The service that merseyrail provide is astoundingly below industry standard, a large proportion of the staff are extrememly unproffesional (I dont like to use the word 'scally' but they are), vaping on platforms and generaly being unfriendly. This then brings me to the Liverpool central station security staff, they either act like night club bouncers or think they are in the SAS, standing in groups learing at women passing by.

I was once detained by a member of staff on a station after he scanned my ticket and told me it had ran out the previous month, after explaining that it was a yearly pass he did not belive me until I pointed out the year of expiry on his device!

The introduction of the new trains is an on ongoing nightmare for passengers like me, trying to explain to either your boss why you are late for the 2nd or 3rd time that week or getting home 2 hours late to hungry children.

Your service is now negatively affecting peoples lives, MERSEYRAIL IS BROKEN.

Used to be great and rarely any problems but now it's a daily issue where you're almost gauanteed of cancellations. I have to go early in the morning now to go to the gym in city centre liverpool before work to avoid being late for work but unfortunately early running trains seem to be where alot of the trouble is, be it late running trains, cancelling them or delaying journeys by suddenly kicking people off mid journey due to 'technical issues'. Working life is hard enough as it is and the added stress will not help people's mental health, worrying about being late for work and it's not as if its cheap either.

SARDINES AND COVID

Hello
I want to know why you are using just 3 carriages on James to West Kirby at 17:58. Train is rammed and people standing. Not good for Covid.
Ellesmere port 17:57 had 4 carriages.
It is disgraceful and it us getting busier now. There is no excuse except Costs. My friend is Editior on Echo paper and maybe he can run this in paper as Merseyrail dont seen to be bothered. Please add another carriage to trains so people can sit
Thank you

Once again trains cancelled on the Kirkby line. It's really poor. Trains are only half hour and have been for some months, why are we paying full price for half a service. No-one seems to know if and when a full service will be returned. Shambolic

Trains were poor before the electrical one's in use BUT know even worst. If they are not running they are cancelled halfway through the service. Not a week goes by without them running correctly. Has got worst since the Holtbolt station open. Appalling service. If I could zero I would. Approx 2 weeks ago is took me from 5.00 to 6.45 to get home as I had to get the bus due to fact that the Kirkby train was cancelled and the Ormskirk train was stuck at the station for a while before that was cancelled due to breaking down and the station platform was overcrowd and dangerous before the staff STOP people going down (my train journey usual takes between 10 and 15 mins). Just this morning yet again the Kirkby train was terminated at Kirkdale last week the same thing happened.

Trains get cancelled all the time Very unreliable service since the new trains started and the new station at Headbolt Lane opened. Always making me late for work Trains only running every half hour doesn't help the situation Merseyrail need to get their service sorted

AVOID AVOID AVOID

BEEN FINED £60 !!! DONT TRAVEL ON UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE FINED

It was my first and last time travelling with Mersey rail as I was left absolutely appalled by the service. I have travelled on numerous train services such as Avanti coast, Northern rail and Transport for Wales etc and I have never had any problems with these services. I was approached on a Saturday morning by one of your train wardens she asked me for my train ticket which I had no problem with giving to her, but she then asked me for my ID which I thought was quite questionable until after she had done taking my details from my ID she then informed me 'I had committed an offence by resting my foot on the chair' ???
I would’ve said fair enough and agreed if I had both of my feet crossed on the seat blocking it for someone to sit on and if the train was very busy then I understand that would make people feel uncomfortable. However, the TIP of my shoe rested on the metal part of the chair in front of me, I would like to add that the train was mostly empty with a total of about 3 people spread apart all minding their own business not bothered that my shoe was slightly touching the metal frame. There were no signs near me on the train either.

A bystander had told me after I had got the fine that the train warden had been watching me for a while and made her way down almost excited to fine me. I feel robbed and I find it unfair as she could’ve given me a warning considering it was my first time using your service and i was unaware of how strict you are considering the condition of the trains. I did some research about Mersey rail and fining. There seems to be a lot of innocent people being fined for the greed of your business. I understand train wardens have to deal with a lot of wild crowds and nasty situations but I was an honest paying customer who meant no harm and I feel I was wrongly done.

It was a very uncomfortable situation to be in and its sad other innocent people have to experience this on the daily. I think you need to reevaluate how you treat customers.

I won’t be using Merseyrail again

I won’t be using Merseyrail again, no other provider I have used bully people the way the enforcement officers do. I have made my complaint internally I won’t bore anyone with the details.

They are looking to generate money from honest paying customers through fines. They are creating unsafe travel.

Don’t use Merseyrail.

Heavy handed ticket inspectors would…

Heavy handed ticket inspectors would not wait for my emailed eticket to arrive and instructed me to leave the train. Unbelievable considering the times I have been to the ticket office and for it to be closed and so had to buy an eticket.

Merseyrail - what a day. From a jobs worth duo of rail inspectors to Amanda coming home from Liverpool tonight. Who stepped in to speak to a guy that was becoming to familiar with young girls by leaning into their space and being inappropriate. She handled the situation with aplomb by defusing what could have been tense situation with humour but protecting the girls. Amanda needs recognition for her bravery. If I could I would have given Amanda a 5 star review.

It’s becoming like Northern rail

It’s becoming like Northern rail. Such an unreliable service. I’ve traveled between Ormskirk/Chester 4 times over the last week, and all 4 trips have been significantly impacted red by broken down trains.

I thought they were ‘new’?

I opt to take the train over car, even though it’s a longer trip, because it’s more environmentally friendly. But Merseyrail is just making that difficult to maintain, especially when I’m late to get places.

As stands, your service is unreliable, with customers just waiting for the next fault.
