Unreconciled billing and broken customer portal math—Support is useless

I have been dealing with Indie Campers support for two days straight, and they refuse to explain or reconcile the blatant discrepancies between my online account summary and the official legal invoice they sent me for Booking #3689213.

The customer portal data is mathematically broken on its face—it lists an "Extras" category header total of $539.90, but right below it lists the actual line item as $621.26. Furthermore, the official PDF invoice they emailed me lists my base rental as $1,380.60, while my online portal claims it is $1,442.09. The line-item service fees are entirely different across both documents, meaning they are arbitrarily renaming and inflating charges behind the scenes.

Front-line support agents clearly do not look at the documents provided and just copy-paste script answers. If a billing manager does not contact me immediately to provide a single, transparent, reconciled invoice matching what was actually charged to my credit card, I will be forced to resolve this variance directly through a chargeback with my bank for unsubstantiated billing.

WHAT A SHAME !

WHAT A SHAME !

This was by far one of the most disappointing rental experiences we have ever had.

Unclear pricing practices, lack of consideration for disability, and terms that seem designed to protect the company, not the customer.

- Disability: if you have needs related to a disability, do not expect any help! My wife has a disability, which is precisely why we travel by van and carefully choose models adapted to her needs (integrated step, properly sized bed, accessible storage above the bed, GPS...). This went completely over their heads, with a clearly ableist attitude (a system of oppression that disadvantages disabled people in favor of able-bodied people).

We were informed 3 days before pickup the van of a vehicle change. However, the new vehicle was not adapted to my wife’s disability. We immediately contacted customer service urgently via the chatbot to explain. The next day,an agent assured us that everything would be in order, that the initial model would be maintained and that the Edinburgh depot had been informed. All of this for nothing: at pickup, we ended up with a completely unsuitable other vehicle. On site, the depot refused to listen and imposed a van that did not meet our needs, turning the trip into a real ordeal for my wife.

She had to pull herself up every time to access the bed, because a second sleeping platform had been added on top of the first one (you see, they couldn’t keep it in their warehouse!), raising the whole thing by about 20 cm. Of course: no step, no GPS, less storage.

What about care of declared medical needed and respect of explicit confirmed commitment ?

- Edinburgh pick-up: within our group of 4 vans, at least 2 were changed at pickup which suggests serious operational issues. Plus, one of the 4 vans even broke down on the very first day (it was supposed to go for repairs, but they still decided to assign it)!

We arrived early to pick up our van at 2:30 pm, but on site the staff let 3 other people go ahead of us who had a later pickup time than ours. In the end, we were taken care of at 3 pm and only left at 4:15 pm! You MUST check absolutely everything: gas, pipes, water system, curtains, levels, otherwise expect unpleasant surprises. We were missing: water hose, water cap, and we even needed a lighter to use the gas. The side blackout curtains were even detached and we had to fix them ourselves (they should thank us for doing their job!). The fuel level was barely above empty. Even basic equipment like leveling blocks was not provided at the Edinburgh pickup (0 blocks across all 4 vans)! And to finish, the floor was dirty and the cleaning was poor. Do not count on them to fix it, as they don’t have time and force you to validate in their app that everything is clean, otherwise you can’t leave!

- Fuel policy: you must return the vehicle with exactly the same level. Any surplus is lost at your expense. Good luck getting it back to the exact level without overpaying!

- Inconsistent pricing: we traveled with friends, same day and van model, yet different gas bottle sizes and prices were applied (ours was smaller and more expensive than theirs!). Note if you contact customer service directly, the price can differ from what is shown online!

- Questionable promotional practices: during events like Black Friday, advertised “discounts” do not necessarily reflect real savings. We observed that despite “huge” promotions, the final rental price was actually higher than outside promotional periods. A shame!

- Very permissive Terms & Conditions: no guarantee on the actual vehicle model, layout, or equipment. Do not expect more than the bare minimum for options and do not count on getting the model you booked!

Of course opened a complaint with their services. And despite all this, they refuse any compensation, hiding behind terms and a so-called “fairness between customers”!

This is the first time we have faced such a lack of responsibility and consideration.

If you have specific needs, or if you rely on what is promised before your trip, be extremely cautious!

Indie Campers ruined our trip and turned an already frustrating rental into an extremely disappointing experience! If you are looking for professionalism and reliability: run.

Terrible service- rip off

Truly in shock. Terrible service, this company is a scam and have zero flexibility. Very intransparent policies and pricing. I booked a van from Porto, and selected my dates (4 days). Once the booking went through, it had added 3 days, and apparently I was supposed to know that vans in a yellow / purple band or viceversa have a minimum one week booking. When I tried to call back within a few hours, it was too late- the 1400 EUR is completely unrefundable except 5%. This company has ruined me and my friend's holiday and we haven't even set off yet. I called their customer support 3 times, where they promised to respond in writing, and I got nothing. On the 3rd call I was told I wouldn't get my money back. Do not use.

Extremely questionable business practices

I would strongly caution anyone against trusting Indie Campers with important travel plans, especially if your trip depends on receiving the specific vehicle you booked.

I booked an Adventure Tent Jeep 4x4 with roof tent out of Las Vegas because my trip plans required a 4x4 high-clearance vehicle for remote desert and landscape photography locations. Before my pickup date, Indie Campers quietly changed my confirmed booking to an Adventure Tent Select, which turned out to be a Ford Maverick, without my consent and without any direct notification to me. I only discovered the change myself when reviewing the booking.

Indie Campers later claimed the Ford Maverick was an “upgrade,” but it was not the vehicle I booked, did not appear to meet the same 4x4 high-clearance needs for my trip, and was shown as a lower-priced option on their own website. They also did not proactively notify me of the change or offer to refund the price difference between the two vehicle classes.

I contacted Indie Campers before my travel deadline asking them to either restore the original Adventure Tent vehicle I booked or issue a full refund. They did not resolve the issue in time. Because I had no confirmation that the correct vehicle would be provided, I had to cancel my required flight and hotel arrangements.

Only after I had already canceled those travel arrangements did Indie Campers respond and say they had restored the original Adventure Tent vehicle... a full 6 hours after the time my flight had been scheduled to depart. Their own representative acknowledged in writing that this was not a voluntary change of plans on my part, that I canceled my flight and hotel due to the uncertainty surrounding the vehicle class, and that their timing did not align with my travel deadlines.

Despite that, Indie Campers refused to issue a full refund and tried to treat the booking as active/non-refundable.

My issue is not just that there was a vehicle substitution. It is that Indie Campers quietly changed my confirmed vehicle to a different, lower-priced vehicle class without direct notice, claimed it was an upgrade, did not offer the price difference, failed to resolve the issue before my travel deadline, and then refused to take responsibility after the trip became impossible.

If your plans depend on getting the specific vehicle you booked, I would be extremely cautious with this company.

Do not recommend

We rented a van from Indie Campers for our trip across Australia, and while the journey itself was memorable, the condition of the vehicle was disappointing overall. On the positive side, the engine and front driving components were generally reliable. There were some concerns with the shocks and steering, but the van did get us safely to each destination. Pickup was straightforward, and the staff at collection were friendly and helpful. When an electrical issue arose with a broken circuit breaker, the company did arrange a mechanic promptly, which we appreciated.

Unfortunately, the living portion of the van was in very poor condition. The battery would not stay charged, which caused repeated inconvenience and led to spoiled food. The bathroom sink was loose, leaked, and did not function properly. One oven burner did not work, the microwave did not work, and the heater and air conditioning on the camper side barely functioned. None of the windows would open properly, one screen was damaged, several cabinet knobs were missing, the ceiling vent crank was broken, the freezer door was broken, and the ladder to the top bunk had a broken rung that created a clear safety hazard. Even the passenger headrest repeatedly fell off.

The booking process was also frustrating. We were charged for extra kits we did not order and were unable to get the charges corrected. We also had to perform some minor maintenance ourselves during the trip. Customer service over the phone was not especially helpful.

Overall, while the driving side of the van was serviceable and some staff members were helpful, the poor condition of the camper portion and the booking frustrations made this a disappointing rental experience with Indie Campers.
