Beware of Unjust Charges and Poor Customer Service!

I recently rented a car from Hertz at Zurich Airport from November 18th to 21st, and my experience has been nothing short of a nightmare. Upon picking up the vehicle, I thoroughly inspected it for any existing damage and found none. When I returned the car, there was no one available to check it in, which left me feeling uneasy but hopeful that everything would be fine.

A few days later, to my shock, I was charged over £2000 for damages that I did not cause! I immediately reached out to Hertz for clarification and requested images of the alleged damage. What I received were blurry photos that made it impossible to identify any visible issues. It felt like a typical scam, reminiscent of the notorious practices of companies like Green Motion.

The lack of transparency and accountability from Hertz is appalling. I trusted them to provide a fair rental experience, but instead, I was left feeling cheated and frustrated. I urge anyone considering renting from Hertz to think twice and thoroughly document every detail of your rental experience.

Save yourself the headache and choose a more reputable company. I will never rent from Hertz again!

Unjust Charges Alert

HERTZ Geneva - Gare de Cornavin – Unjust Charges - Avoid!

When renting a car at Hertz (Thrifty) Cornavin, Geneva, I was charged 470 CHF for pre-existing damage to the car’s right front alloy wheel, which I had thoroughly documented with photos and videos before driving. Despite this clear evidence, the money was taken from my card without warning, and I’ve had no communication from Hertz about my claim.

The staff at this location failed to note the damage during pick-up and insisted I sign paperwork before even inspecting the car—a blatantly unprofessional and deceitful practice.

To make matters worse, I had to wait almost 30 minutes to collect the car, even though I checked in online in advance. Returning the car was equally frustrating due to the lack of instructions—I only managed thanks to previous customer reviews.

This entire experience has been stressful and time-consuming, and I am still fighting to get my money back. Avoid this location unless you enjoy dealing with poor service and unjustified charges.

Car problem

On the 5th day of driving there was a warning light that came up on the dashboard that if it happened to my own car I would get it towed straight to the mechanic. There was a loss of power when I was driving on the motorway. When I rang them the lady that I was talking to had advised me to return the car and get a replacement. I headed straight to the airport. When I came to their place the man at the reception checked the fuel gauge straight away and told me that the fuel tank was not full without finding out why we returned the car, he was being dismissive as I tried to explain to him and the car was not due for return and that we experienced problem with it. He said there was no mechanic available to check the car. He test drive the car at parking area only and said the car was ok to drive. I tried explaining to him that when I was driving it on the motorway it sounded like a sports car but running like a turtle but again he never listened. He was arrogant. So I just drove off the car and used it for the remaining of our holiday. I felt like the car was not fuel efficient.

Total ripoff

I rented a car at a 41.30CHF rate per day. I returned the car and I got an estimated confirming this price. However, a few days later I was billed way more. Wehn I requested an explanation, they sent me a totally different invoice, displaying a daily rate of 132CHF. I asked why and the response was that the rate fluctuates depending on the day, even though there was no communication about this and it doesn't make any sense to charge 3 times the reservation rate.
The most deceiving experience ever.
First time ever (after renting cars in many countries for more than 20 years) that I got an invoice with that explanation.

stay away

stay away. charged me 950 CHF for some very light marks on the back panel which I had zero awareness of. terrible that they are allowed to charge this amount. they don't even fix these scratches either as when you receive a car its marked up with preexisting marks. go elsewhere.

Terrible Hertz branch

I will not recommend renting the car from the Hertz Swiss location. The customer service is terrible. No communication at all. Additionally you need to be very careful at the time of rental documenting all the scratches because they may charge you for any small pre-existing scratch at return. If there are extra charges after the rental they will not send you an invoice but try to withdraw the money from your card. In our case the bank froze our card due to unauthorised request for payment. The Invoice came 4 weeks later with a threat that we will be banned from renting cars from Hertz. The delay in payment was due to the very bad customer service on their part and misinformation from them.

Avoid Hertz

For this mark on the back wheel, the company charged €156 !! They do it automatically and systematical for any little marks (this was the "entry" fees but is can go much higher), so better to avoid Hertz. They do attractive prices then charge you extras. This costed me almost the same price as the rental price for 9 days...!

I've tried many rental car companies, I'm always very careful, never had an issue.
It's the first and last time I rent with Hertz.

This was in Spain.

WARNING!!

WARNING!!! I was charged CHF470 ($500) for the tiniest superficial scratch to the wheel trim as punishment for not taking Hertz insurance. They gave me no paperwork so can’t claim. I’ve rented hundreds of cars over many years but never been treated like this. Never again!

Scammed for tiny scratch I did not cause

Within an hour of returning a rental car, Hertz charged me 550 Swiss franks for a tiny scratch I know for sure I did not cause, nor saw at checkout. After decades of renting cars from various rental car companies, many of them having unrepaired little scratches or dents at pickup, this is the first time I definitely feel scammed. Hertz return guy lied to me, too. Will never do business w this rapacious company again.

Unsafe, unreliable and unfair

Unsafe, unreliable and unfair.
M Hertz rental broke down. It took hours of phone calls, and a visit to Hertz before we finally received a tow. They were unable to give us a replacement vehicle, forcing us to take public transit and lose a day of travel. Hertz charged me for the full amount of the reservation (although it was cut short due to the breakdown) and ignored all requests to reconcile the issue.
In all, I paid for a broken vehicle plus public transit for a group of four and lost a day of travel due to their incompetence and awful service.
I will truly never forget this experience and would never rely on this company to care properly for their vehicles or customers.

Rip off

We arrived and were told that we were getting an upgrade and that our car was being washed and would be '2 minutes'. The car was in the end 40 minutes and there were 4 couples after us, so their delay will have been longer.

The 'upgrade' was from a Mercedes to a Skoda.

Given we were late and 2 other couples were waiting for us for dinner, we didn't take a video of our car.

On return we were told that there was a tiny nick on a tyre rim. We had driven on a motorway to a chalet and back and hadn't parked or touched anything. To be fair in the dark of the garage I probably wouldn't even have seen a nick of that size on inspection.

I have just had a bill for Ch Fr 500.00.

I won't be using Hertz again and reading the reviews below, this would seem to be a regular occurrence. You want to see the good in people and it just makes you so depressed.

Overcharging on damage repairs

My car hire had a tiny dent in the bonnet / hood which I didn't spot on collection. I definitely did not hit anything - it looked more like a pressure washer lance strike or a sharp hard object. Bill 1300CHF. Insufficient details on the invoice to claim insurance. The car was nice, but never again. Also, no-one available to hand car to, so they said "customer wouldn't wait". Simply not true.

Hertz scammers

I rented a car from Hertz Autovermietung, Zurich near the train station.
I returned the car in perfect condition but Hertz then charged me an additional 450 CHF on my visa card for "damage" and without any explanation or argument. After sending several emails to the Customer relation department they ended up sending me photos of micro scratches on a rim of the car.
I am absolutely certain that I did not make these scratches but these scammers claim the opposite. I obviously did not take photos at the time of rental, but besides if I had taken some I am not sure that such small details would be noticeable.
I advise everyone not to rent a car from these scammers

Be aware

Be aware
This company are thiefs and real sorry to say aswholes.
I rented a car in stockstrasse Zurich. I was not really happy with the car. I checked it and the car was just washed and the sun was shining.
I toke some pics and found a dent and was already known.
After 3 hrs and in the que for the border i decided to return to my home kloten en return the car because it was not really a luxury z car.
So 3 hours later I returned the car.
To the airport and there was a guy I saw already many times that was working for hertz.
I got a better car and toke my stuff to my new car.
And the guy came to me and said we have an issue. There was a scratch on the hood on top near the wiper. Impossible to make by a person or you have to do that on perpose. Or bent over you girl friend on the hood and she wil make the scratch.
And the scratch was not a straight scratch it was an oval circular scratch. Why should I make a circulate scratch on a new car.
But anyway the charge me 1200 chf and an additional 1100 Chf for something I don’t do and there is no report nothing.
No one to contact no tel nr. They just charged 2300 for a scratch on a car I had for 3 hours and was parked for maybe 30 in my garage underneath my apartment.
No people to contact only reservation nr.
I’m busy with my lawyer to get my money bag. So never never never take a car from hertz they stealing your money with dirty tricks.
Don’t rent there

RENTER BEWARE!!

Just like a lot of the other posts, we experienced this Hertz location (on the Swiss side of the Geneva airport) saying we damaged the vehicle during our rental when we know we didn't. So if you decide not to take out the additional full coverage insurance, make sure you thoroughly inspect the car and take LOTS of pictures before you move the car one inch off the lot, and also take pictures afterwards. Get down on your hands and knees and make sure you take pictures of the front bumper, spoiler, underneath, etc. And also wheels. Otherwise, they will charge you for damage. The damage we supposedly incurred to the front bumper and spoiler was pretty minor but they were quick to point it out when we returned, almost like they knew there was damage there and knew we didn't have the additional insurance. Wouldn't be surprised if they charged other people for the same damage! Unfortunately when we examined the car before we rented we did not get down on our hands and knees to look closely and we didn't take any pictures. But I did reserve and rent the car with AMEX so they should be covering the damage since I have no other recourse. The burden of proof is on my even thought I provided a lot of information as to why we didn't damage the car. Very disappointed in this location especially since I've been a Hertz member for a couple decades. We have previously rented on the French side of the Geneva airport and we had a much better experience. But we also took out the full insurance coverage during that rental, so maybe that was the difference.

I rented a car for a few days in…

I rented a car for a few days in Geneva. The vehicle was picked up late at 11:30 pm due to my arrival time.

At the rental counter, I was assisted by a Hertz employee who informed me that the vehicle was located in space 280 in the parking lot which is 10 minutes from the main counter and accessible by shuttle.

No additional information was given to me about the condition of the vehicle.

Upon arriving at the vehicle, I noticed a scratch on the rear left rim of the vehicle and immediately took a photo.

I tried to find a Hertz employee in the rental office in the parking lot to report the problem with the rim, but the office was already closed and there were no Hertz employees in the vicinity.

Since I did not have a mobile network in Switzerland and I was unable to contact Hertz, I decided to take the vehicle and go to my destination 1.5 hours from Geneva.

The next morning, I received an email from Hertz stating that the right wheels of the vehicle had scratches that I did not find. Only the one on the rear left wheel was visible.

On my return to return the rental car, one of the Hertz employees (a fairly tall young man) who was not very professional and borderline polite pointed out the scratch on the rear left rim, the scratch for which I have a photo taken before taking possession of the vehicle and that despite that, according to him, was not proof that I did not do it.

In the end, and without my consent, I was charged €485 to my credit card for damage that I was not responsible for, and this while I was on the plane on my return flight.

I have tried to contact Hertz since and despite an open ticket (21859422) I have not received any response. I have also tried to contact them by phone several times but the only number that works is the reservation number.

I have a terrible memory of this company and I will never give them another penny and I will fight to get back what was stolen from me, by any means necessary.

I strongly advise against this company.

Mislead at the front desk

Family of 4 heading to Chamonix - booked through easjet extras which specifically mentioned that there are no airport charges to be paid. I was charged 88CHF, which in the many years I have been going to Geneva, no other car rental company has charged me this fee.

At the desk I was then asked if I wanted an upgrade and they offered an EV - a polestar to be precise and the desk attendant mentioned that they would cover all charges. I was uncomfortable in driving an EV so I rejected and wanted to use the car I had originally requested.

To my neglect, post signing the contract, I realised that they had written that I had accepted an upgrade and charged me 100CHF.

So a booking that was around 350CHF originally they managed to elevate to nearly 900CHF (I did add full insurance) by misleading me into signing on an electronic pad and to my rush and stupidity I didnt check the final contract. Note the contract that they email you immediately will not have any of these details on it. On your return you will get an itemised bill.

I have had had multiple email conversations and they continue to blame me for this. Clearly customer satisfaction is not a priority for them. I wish I had checked their review rating on here and didnt just go with their name.

Hertz are appalling at Geneva airport

I'm a Hertz Gold Card customer and have always thought that Hertz were the best car hire company.
They are now APPALLING at GENEVA airport; read the other reviews on here.
I was charged €178 on the wrong card before I had even got to the desk, so I incurred cross border transaction fees for this "damage bond".
Then I had a long wait before being booked in, despite being a Gold card customer, and I was told that I should take breakdown insurance as I was going into France!!! I refused, and told them if their car broke down, they would have to recover it... I've never been asked for this before, by Hertz, or any other firm.
Needless to say I did not get the car I had booked; who does?
On return at 0650 there was no-one there to check the car back in, and no available parking bays, so I took photos of the car and dropped the keys in their box.
10 mins after I had gone through security in the airport at about 0720 I received an email saying there was £517 worth of damage to the car; allegedly a light scratch!
I was amazed, as I knew there was no damage.
Their photos were appalling, and possibly or probably of a different car, so I challenged them and complained to my credit card company and threatened Hertz with legal action.
They did not respond within their promised 10 days, but upon further complaint, and maybe pressure from American Express, they decided to refund my
credit card in full.
If I hadn't got my 4 photos I doubt this franchise of Hertz would have backed down, so don't get caught by these sharks with their contrived scams and fraudulent claims of damage that doesn't exist; take photos.

63. Swiss ranks surcharge over a month after.

I have never ever had a car rental company sent me an invoice of over Fr.60 simply for them to notify traffic authorities of my name and address for most likely a tiny find for speeding.
All the other current companies I have used for 20 years in the Swiss airport would never send such a bill.
This is apparently something that hertz does not others

Wheel scratches

On collection of car was informed there was a CHF90 compulsory charge for snow socks or could upgrade to a 4x4 for CHF100. Took the upgrade but have since found no mention of snow socks required in the terms and conditions. On return of vehicle have been charged for minor scratches on all wheels at CHF400 per wheel. Stay away from this company, seem to charge anyone who didn't take out additional insurance for damage.
