Company does not accept Credit cards from so called „Virtual Banks“. So they cancelled the Financial terms on the reservation - I have used this Credit Card all over the world for car reservations. The reservation I made from Germany did not include these peculiar terms. I ended up paying 200 Euro extra for a so called local insurance offered by Avia. Never again.

Let's put our experience from September 2024.
We had made a reservation through an agent and when we picked up the car, they really tried to force us to pay for an additional deposit even though we already had full insurance. The matter could not be resolved and finally when we got the car, its damage was looked at very carefully in the parking lot. As a professional in the auto repair industry, I understand the damage, but these were mainly from traces of use, i.e. hairline scratches. A shocking number of them were listed on the rental paperwork in addition to a few real damages. I immediately smelled burning smoke and started taking photos and videos of the car and especially the lower parts of the bumper. They seemed like a real cash cow for this rental company. I made sure that the employee saw what I was doing.
Everything was forbidden in the car. You were not allowed to drink, eat, smoke or even wear shorts. However, the car was shabby so I had to drink from a bottle several times and eat something. I didn't mess up.
When returning the car, the same faces were at the counter again and some guy went to check the car. It took almost half an hour for me to tell them that our flight check-in was open and we were leaving. That was ok with them and I haven't heard anything since.
I got a really bad feeling about the car rental and how rude and meticulous their actions are. Without a doubt, the intention is to make as much money as possible with every scratch, without intending to fix them. Their dishonest actions. As for the company's answers on this site. They just describe the arrogant and dishonest attitude of their rental business. Good people, avoid this rental company!

A good example. I mean this attacking and blaming attitude that best describes the entire company's operations. The bullheaded defense of every condition or course of action is clearly visible, as is the fact that customers are indeed always wrong.
There is a lot of negative feedback here on the forum too and I would recommend listening with a sensitive ear to the customers' experiences and learning from them. They have experience with other rental companies and they feel that there is something wrong with your service.
It's worth remembering that 30% of your customers have given you a rating of one, and will no longer return or bring you a single euro.
You may have a lot of potential, but the wrong attitude, process and even the people who do it.
Good luck fixing that. It will determine your success.

This was hands down the most outrageous and terrifying experience I have ever had with a rental company.
After returning the car too close to my flight time, I didn’t have time to refuel or wash it. I was fully prepared to pay the (already inflated) refuelling and cleaning charges, as stated in the contract. Completely my fault for poor planning, fair enough!
However, instead of simply charging my card on file or even contacting me... After dropping off the car, Avia called the police on me!
Yes, really. They had the Croatian police pull me from my boarding gate at Dubrovnik Airport, away from my family, and detain me in front of the entire terminal. As I was preparing to board! I was intimidated by the police and told I had to leave the airport to refuel and wash the car. I told them I would miss my flight and asked why hadn't I been contacted or my card been charged!
Failing to refuel is not a crime in any country, yet Avia weaponised the police to humiliate and terrify their customer. I was left shaken, worried about being arrested, and nearly missed my flight.
Only AFTER this ordeal did they contact me --spamming me with eight calls in a row while I was detained at this behest.
On top of this, though minor in comparison, at pickup, they informed me that my Mastercard was not acceptable for the security deposit. Instead, I would have to pay an outrageous sum, five times the cost of the entire rental. At 9PM, stranded in a foreign country with no alternative transport, I accepted. Pure extortion.
Their so-called “cross-border insurance” is a scam. They charge around 4-5x higher than any other company and informed me I would need to purchase a green card to travel into Bosnia. Upon research, this is not true at all. The way they present this makes it seem mandatory when it is not.
At drop-off, they quietly slip in a €12 “cleaning fee”, poorly disclosed and clearly designed to gouge customers on the way out.
This company preys on tourists when they are most vulnerable, relying on intimidation, hidden fees, and outright scams. I’ve rented cars all over the world, and I have never encountered anything remotely this abusive.
Avoid Avia like the plague. Save yourself the nightmare and rent from literally any other provider.

We booked a rental car through DiscoverCars.com with Avaia Car Rental in Split. Upon arrival at the airport, we were told that our credit card would not be accepted, even though it was a physical Visa credit card as required in the terms for the deposit. They claimed the card was from a “virtual bank” and therefore could not be used to reserve the deposit. The only solution offered was to upgrade to the “full package” with maximum insurance and additional fees such as for fuel, so that the car could be rented without a deposit. This would have made the rental far more expensive than what we had already agreed to and paid for.
We already have rental car coverage through our travel insurance and did not want this. Our bank is not a virtual bank, and it is clear this explanation was used to pressure us into paying more. Their claim that this was “standard practice at all car rental companies there” is not true. We rented a car on the spot from another company at the same airport with the same card, at a lower price than what Avaia demanded.
Looking at other reviews now, I see that several other customers have had similar experiences. In our view, this appears to be a deliberate strategy to increase the price beyond what the customer has agreed to. We therefore warn others against using this company.

I had a bad experience with Avia rent a car
First, they refused to give me full insurance because my rental was only 4 days. They said it was too short and risky, so I had to pay €130 for third-party insurance, which was very expensive for the cheapest car.
Second, they told me the fuel policy is full to full. But when I got the car, the tank was not really full — the needle was under the full line. When I filled it myself, the needle went higher, so clearly they didn’t give me a full tank.
Third, when I returned the car, they charged me €12 for cleaning. The car was not dirty, only a little dusty from normal driving. No mud, no mess inside. I think they charge this to everyone no matter what. So be prepared to pay 12 euro extra for cleaning.
Overall, I felt the company was not fair, not honest and no respect for their own rules.

DO NOT RENT A CAR FROM THIS COMPANY IT IS A MASSIVE PARASITIC BUSINESS DESIGNED TO TAKE YOUR DEPOSIT AS YOU ARE TIME PRESSURED BEFORE YOU FLY HOME ETC!!!
1) They will try everything in their power to get your excess insurance value! GET EXCESS INSURANCE!!! Massive Insurance scam the reps get commission its a known thing.
2) FILM AND PHOTO YOUR CAR BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE AIRPORT ALL OVER AND UNDER THE BUMPERS! Again they WILL claim you have damaged it on some old damage that isnt listed in their details and they dont point out before you leave, this again is a SCAM they do it everytime!
3) They CLAIM that "clean to clean" is in the contract and it is not! Even if it was my car is always spotless and they will argue that because you have driven it and used it since the clean 7km from the airport it is now dirty and needs to be clean!!! Another 12 euros!!
4) All the agents are extremely parasitic and will tell you, you have damaged the car they dont care what you say, they are extremely aggressive and will just take your deposit leaving you to fight it later when you get home etc.
THIS IS ALL FACT THEY WILL COMMENT BELOW THAT THEY ARE AN HONEST COMPANY BLAH BLAH BUT THIS IS THE FACTS ABOVE!! USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

I rented a Skoda or similar, but they gave me a Kia, and the representative told me they are similar 😡. Unfortunately, the car's body had several damages, and the pickup and delivery process took a long time. The car wasn't clean enough. Besides they offer me an insurance which I already had.In short, they wanted to make more money by any means possible.
The car didn't have navigation an it cause a lot of problem for me.

Never again. Hidden fees all around , without a curtesy on telling you. Full to full fuel tank? Forget about it , before thinking to refuel check your receipts. I have paid for mine without even knowing or without a permission.

I had a horrible experience with Avia Rent a Car and would not recommend them to anyone.
The car itself had multiple scratches and damage that they didn’t properly document during pickup. When I returned the vehicle, they tried to charge me for damage that was clearly already there, and it turned into a long argument. It felt like a scam — like they were just trying to squeeze more money out of me.
Overall, a completely unprofessional and stressful experience. There are plenty of better, more transparent rental companies out there — do yourself a favor and avoid Avia.

Après avoir contesté des frais abusifs (200 € d’assurance forcée), Avia Rent a Car m’a bloquée sur Facebook et Instagram au lieu de répondre à mes mails et messages. Ce comportement démontre un manque total de transparence et de professionnalisme.

🇬🇧 Version anglaise :
After disputing unfair charges (€200 for a forced insurance), Avia Rent a Car blocked me on Facebook and Instagram instead of responding to my emails and messages. This behavior clearly shows their lack of transparency and professionalism.
________________________
Update: Avia keeps replying that I “freely accepted” their insurance. The truth is that at Split Airport I was refused the option to leave a deposit and told I had no choice but to pay €200 for their “Avia Supreme Mini” insurance.
This was completely unnecessary since I had already purchased full insurance via CarJet when I booked the car. Despite explaining this at the counter, they refused to release the vehicle unless I paid again.
Afterwards, in their emails, Avia falsely claimed that I “had no credit card.” My bank has confirmed in writing that my card is indeed a credit card.
I have uploaded photo evidence (rental contract + bank proof) in my Google review for transparency.
I have also opened an official case with the European Consumer Centre (ECC), who will now review this abusive practice.

It’s the worst I have ever experienced. Initially nice but returning the cleaned car that was totally perfect the evening before driving to the airport suddenly had some major scratches while returning. I know they were suggesting an insurance for that case which I didn’t buy and my gut feeling was that it s mandatory to leave the care in perfect condition. Thus I prepared the car day before as I never did before! But than 3 people confusing me and rude customer service. Never ever anyone should rent a car at that crappie place. BE CAREFUL! And I suggest to be at least two watchful persons while returning your car!!!

I hired a car from Avia from the Zadar airport office for a week in September 2025. The car was good but the company did their utmost to rip me off for additional fees. An additional €50 for picking up the car at 9.00pm. €12 for cleaning the car (the car was returned in good condition) and finally tried to rip me off for an additional €12 as the car was in their opinion not full and €35 refilling fee. I took the car back and managed to get €6 more in the car. Watch out very unscrupulous and unprofessional

Terrible service!
This rental company does not accept online bank cards, which makes the whole process extremely inconvenient. When I approached the desk for help, the staff were rude and unprofessional. Instead of offering solutions, they practically pressured me into renting under their conditions and paying for their insurance.
Absolutely not recommended under any circumstance!

We booked a vehicle for our family holiday with Avia Rent a Car via a Broker, Orbit.
When we arived at Split Airport on the 15th August, after a lengthy queue, I was told by the Avia Rent a Car operative that they would not be able to provide me with a vehicle as my Visa Credit Card, issued from First Direct Bank (Part of HSBC) was not acceptable as it was from a "Digital Bank". I reviewed the terms and conditions that Orbit had sent me and this says that "Virtual Debit or Credit Cards may not be accepted", but this was a physical VISA card and so this condition didn't apply. Despite arguing my case the agent wouldn't accept it and left me, my wife and 3 kids stranded at the Airport. Our only option was apparently to take out some very expensive and additional insurance. Very convenient!
I was forced to go to the next door hire company, Enterprise, who were polite, friendly and efficient, but, because I hadn't pre-booked anything I was forced to pay an additional 275 Euros to hire the same type of vehicle (VW T-Cross). Needless to say they accepted my VISA Credit card without any issues at all.
I see other customers are experiencing the same issues. I don't beleive this company can be trusted and so I would avoid at all costs. There are plenty of other, reputable companies at the Airport.
I also think Avia's aggressive response to the feedback to the other customers who have experienced this attempt to extort additional money from honest customers speaks for itself.
With 1 IN 4 CUSTOMERS GIVING A 1 STAR REVIEW, I think they need to start taking some ownership for the issues they are causing.

There is a newly launched restrictions for driving into the restricted zones in the old town but it was never verbally mentioned by any staff at the time of key collection (when I arrived, it's nearly office closing). When later found out after stepping into the trap, the staff just said it was well written in the office and I should have seen it. What a good excuse! The penalty could be Eur1600 if keep entering the restricted zone repeatedly (without noticing)! Maybe the staff think it's time to close the day and no need to inform the drivers as they "should have known"?
Besides, when email to ask insurance matters, it was never replied.

This campany knows how to scam costumers leagally. They suddenly did not exsept my credit card for the deposit so we never got the car that we allready paid for. The only Way they could solve it was if we paid for insurence (twice the cost of the car) and its funny how they allowed me to use the credit card for insurance and not for deposit. They allsow would not give us a refond and we ended up having to pay another rental Company for a car. We allsow heard from some lokals that they deliberetley dobble book in hope that someone cant pay for it.

It was a heartwarming experience. The service was very friendly, both during the pick-up in Split and the return in Zagreb. The car was wonderful, new and clean, perfect, a true pleasure to drive through the beautiful landscapes throughout the country. Our trip to Croatia was our honeymoon. We'll take home the best memories.

Bad experience.
Local rental company in Split Airport did not accept my gold Mastercard for deposit because alleged from an Internet bank. This was not mentioned in the rental conditions given by the intermediary rental operator. So, better coordination and operation is needed between those companies. However, I blame Avia, because I had good experiences with the intermediary in the past
The local rental company offered an expensive insurance which was even more than the total rental price.
Got the car finally from Sixt, even 35% cheaper with no additional insurance required. No problem with my credit card (which includes insurance).
Never again.

The worst car rental experience – Avia Rent a Car
We have traveled to more than 30 countries and rented cars many times, but we have never experienced anything like this.
We purchased full insurance, yet after a minor damage the company charged us €3,100, claiming we should have called the police. This requirement was never explained to us at pickup – on the contrary, the employee even joked that “we don’t have to worry about anything.” The condition existed only in the small print of the contract, which is completely misleading.
On top of this, they withheld money because we returned the car earlier and also charged €50 for “out of hours.”
It is unacceptable to pay for full insurance and still be trapped with hidden terms and outrageous charges. Completely unprofessional, misleading and disrespectful towards customers.
We will never use Avia Rent a Car again and strongly warn other travelers to avoid them.
