Very disappointing experience.
At vehicle collection, I was informed that my bank cards were not acceptable and had to pay an additional €150 for insurance in order to proceed with the rental.
After returning the car, I was charged another €150 for "professional chemical cleaning" after water was spilled on a fabric seat. The company claims that visible marks remained and that chemical cleaning was required. However, the liquid involved was plain water, and I strongly disagree with the conclusion that such a charge was justified.
Most importantly, despite my requests, I have not received any invoice or proof of the actual cleaning costs that would justify a €150 fee.
Customers can draw their own conclusions, but I felt that the additional charges throughout the rental process were excessive and lacked transparency.
I would not choose this company again.

Before they start by saying that this comment is misleading, exaggerated or inaccurate… just stay away from this rental car.
AVIA RENTAL IN PULA we are frustrated that we weren’t able to get the car we booked online through Check24. We wanted to pay the deposit using a credit card — they didn’t even attempt to process it. They simply stated they don’t accept the card because it’s a “digital card,” even though we handed them the physical card. Their reasoning? It’s an online bank. Well, most banks are online banks now, and we have used this exact card on every trip we’ve taken without any issue.
We then offered my credit card as an alternative, but that was also rejected — because the booking wasn’t under my name. Fair enough as a policy, but what followed was completely unacceptable.
In an effort to find a solution, we contacted Check24 directly. After explaining the full situation, they offered to issue a voucher to change the booking name so we could use the other credit card. We informed both the AVIA supervisor and the other staff member on duty — and they flatly refused. Just like that, we were denied the car we had legitimately booked and paid for.
To make matters worse, Check24 requested a written note from the supervisor confirming that our card was not accepted, so we could at least process a refund. The AVIA supervisor refused to provide that too — meaning we were left with no car AND no path to a refund.
And throughout all of this? The AVIA staff — including the supervisor — were deeply unfriendly, visibly irritated, and wore smirks on their faces as if our frustration was entertaining to them.
Croatia, this is no way to welcome your guests.

I am disappointed with my recent experience with Avia Rent a Car.
After returning the vehicle, I was charged €15 for vehicle cleaning and €35 for a vehicle category upgrade.
The cleaning charge is disputed because the vehicle was already dirty when I collected it, and I have photographs as evidence. The upgrade charge is also disputed because I never requested or agreed to any upgrade.
I contacted customer service and provided the relevant information, but several days have passed without any response.
I understand that mistakes can happen, but I expect clear communication, supporting documentation for any additional charges, and a timely response to customer complaints.
I hope Avia will review my case and resolve this matter fairly.
Update after the company's response:
The company states that I accepted a vehicle upgrade due to my early arrival. However, I was never informed that accepting the alternative vehicle would incur an additional €35 charge. I also have photographs showing that the vehicle was already dirty on the exterior when collected.

Never again!!Stay away! The car we picked up at Dubrovnik airport was as expected. The additional fee for taking a ferry in Croatia was clearly stated. However were we unpleasantly surprised by the €50 charge to staff the office at 7 am as we had a 9am flight. We also agree with others that a €15 cleaning fee is unusual and not “industry standard”‘in our experience. The biggest problem however was how they dealt with our flat tire. When I called them, they said it would be cheaper for us to deal with it ourselves and claim through our own insurance. They sent the name of a towing company and we replaced the tire. When we returned the car, they said we had needed to change both rear tires and claimed they had said this on the phone. They had not although they will dispute this. We had to pay for two new tires after already paying for a used one during our emergency road side flat. They also charged us for damage under the car bumper that we could not see. When I asked if they would consider waiving the €75 processing fee, as a good will gesture given that we ended up paying for 3 tires, they aggressively declined. Never did they express any kind of understanding for how difficult and stressful the situation was for us. This company has many reviews referring to aggressive communication and excessive charges. Their responses to complaints left on this site leave a great deal to be desired. They hide behind “industry standard” and “stated in the contract”. We have rented many times all over Europe and their standards are pathetic. Go elsewhere, pay a bit more to pay less!

I would have give these thieves no stars if I could. Avoid at all costs. Hidden charges all the way. We got stung 30 euros for cleaning the car which was immaculate. They also wanted £50 for arriving late to pick up the car as our flight was half a hour late. Just not a pleasant experience

Vehicle returned washed inside and outside. Charged an additional €35 cleaning fee because of insect residue on the front bumper after normal highway driving. Photos were provided, but the refund request was rejected. Make sure to take detailed photos before returning your vehicle.

I’m not recommending this company. Today I had a bad experienced with this company when I returned a car. When I picked up the car I payed additional 15 Euro to don’t clean the car by myself. What was my surprised during return when the company charged my by 170 Euro for chemical cleaning because on the passenger seat was a small sea salt stain. My mistake because I didn’t take any pictures outside and inside the car when I picked them up.
The funniest and most disappointing thing about this whole situation is that the baby seat and the booster seat rented with the car were dirty, and the cost of renting them is disproportionate to the entire car rental.
I warn anyone renting a car against taking photos of the interior or exterior of the car. As for Avia, I will definitely never rent a car from them again. They treated me with extreme arrogance and no understanding. I'm sure the stain on the seat can be cleaned with a damp cloth.

Genuinly one of the worst and most difficult car rental companies Ive had the displeasure of dealing with. I was charged 350 euros for a car park ding when I returned the car. They will also try to upsell everyone a more expensive car by saying there car isnt available yet. Just use a different company without all of the extra hidden charges in their voucher. The price you see on Discover Cars is not what you will end up paying.

We had a great experience with AVIA in Pula. The vehicle handover and return process were both very quick and smooth, which made everything stress-free. The service was professional from start to finish, and the staff was friendly and helpful.
The car itself was new, high-quality, and extremely clean. We were very satisfied with the entire experience and would definitely recommend AVIA to anyone visiting Pula.

Booked the car with a virtual credit card. Now they forced me to took a 300 euro insurance cause i dont have a fysical card. When returning the car they charged me for a scratch which happily stood on the damagerapport. This company is an absolute scam.

Zagreb: 29/04/2026: Everything went fine, until I returned the car. When I walked to the office with an unfriendly guy, he told me the car was very dirty and that this would cost an extra 35 euros. I didn't even get the chance to take some photos. The car was clean! These are mafia practices to fleece customers out of their cheap money. This was so unfair. One star is to much !

Extrem DANGER.
They're ripping off their customers. I had to pay 35. € fur a cleaning of the car. But the car was perfect clean, I just used it for two transfers of 35 km.

Never again Avia! They charged me 9 € for washing the car and 35 € for the winter tires. You won‘t get the car without paying the additional fee. In my oppinion, this borders on a rip-off/fraud, as you‘re not informed of this beforehand.

Disgusting Company.
I rented a vehicle from them for 5 days in September with no issues, only to then be sent a parking fine months later.
When asked to supply photo evidence of this as I was not aware of any fine, they sent a random picture of a car with the number plate blanked out.
After going back and forth with Avia and then also with Pula Parking (Which they suggested i contact directly), they then stopped replying and charged my card anyway at 3 times the price of the intial rental (£122.47). This has now led to a formal charge back through my bank as they were unable to supply the basic evidence needed for a parking fine.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS SCAMMING COMPANY.
Reply to your response :
Unfortunately for you, I have the whole email trail showing this situation, along with the picture you provided that does not show the registration of the number plate of the vehicle during the time of the alleged offence.
So, for you to say I knew about the ticket and chose not to pay this, is false and untrue, but again, I expect nothing less from your company as you have shown poor character and professionalism throughout this process so far.
When i questioned AVIA about the validity of the photo of the vehicle and the fact it DOES NOT show a registration plate (even though you say it does..?) Avia simply stated “It is not in a position to challenge the validity of materials issued by the official parking authority”. Following this, you also said that the photos provided by Pula Parking “are not of a professional nature”.
With this in mind, I do not see why I should have to pay for an alleged fine which I was unaware of, when you cannot provide the basic evidence needed in a situation like this.
You were then quick enough to jump on here a reply.. but when it came to replying to me after I said I had spoken with Pula Parking as advised by AVIA.. no response.. then you charged my card anyway.
Shocking customer service and even more shocking response from you.
STAY AWAY PEOPLE!

They are competitive with lower car rental costs, but then they will charge you for everything additionally. They do not accept all types of credit cards for depositing (in our case it was the Master card that we have been using for years all over Europe and Croatia) in order to force you to take insurance that you may not need. When returning the car, they expect you to wash it, but they don't inform you about it in advance, they just charge you extra for that washing. Unprofessional and unfriendly staff. In short: NEVER AGAIN!!!

Company does not accept Credit cards from so called „Virtual Banks“. So they cancelled the Financial terms on the reservation - I have used this Credit Card all over the world for car reservations. The reservation I made from Germany did not include these peculiar terms. I ended up paying 200 Euro extra for a so called local insurance offered by Avia. Never again.

Let's put our experience from September 2024.
We had made a reservation through an agent and when we picked up the car, they really tried to force us to pay for an additional deposit even though we already had full insurance. The matter could not be resolved and finally when we got the car, its damage was looked at very carefully in the parking lot. As a professional in the auto repair industry, I understand the damage, but these were mainly from traces of use, i.e. hairline scratches. A shocking number of them were listed on the rental paperwork in addition to a few real damages. I immediately smelled burning smoke and started taking photos and videos of the car and especially the lower parts of the bumper. They seemed like a real cash cow for this rental company. I made sure that the employee saw what I was doing.
Everything was forbidden in the car. You were not allowed to drink, eat, smoke or even wear shorts. However, the car was shabby so I had to drink from a bottle several times and eat something. I didn't mess up.
When returning the car, the same faces were at the counter again and some guy went to check the car. It took almost half an hour for me to tell them that our flight check-in was open and we were leaving. That was ok with them and I haven't heard anything since.
I got a really bad feeling about the car rental and how rude and meticulous their actions are. Without a doubt, the intention is to make as much money as possible with every scratch, without intending to fix them. Their dishonest actions. As for the company's answers on this site. They just describe the arrogant and dishonest attitude of their rental business. Good people, avoid this rental company!
28/9/2025 reply for avia team
A good example. I mean this attacking and blaming attitude that best describes the entire company's operations. The bullheaded defense of every condition or course of action is clearly visible, as is the fact that customers are indeed always wrong.
There is a lot of negative feedback here on the forum too and I would recommend listening with a sensitive ear to the customers' experiences and learning from them. They have experience with other rental companies and they feel that there is something wrong with your service.
It's worth remembering that 30% of your customers have given you a rating of one, and will no longer return or bring you a single euro.
You may have a lot of potential, but the wrong attitude, process and even the people who do it.
Good luck fixing that. It will determine your success.

This was hands down the most outrageous and terrifying experience I have ever had with a rental company.
After returning the car too close to my flight time, I didn’t have time to refuel or wash it. I was fully prepared to pay the (already inflated) refuelling and cleaning charges, as stated in the contract. Completely my fault for poor planning, fair enough!
However, instead of simply charging my card on file or even contacting me... After dropping off the car, Avia called the police on me!
Yes, really. They had the Croatian police pull me from my boarding gate at Dubrovnik Airport, away from my family, and detain me in front of the entire terminal. As I was preparing to board! I was intimidated by the police and told I had to leave the airport to refuel and wash the car. I told them I would miss my flight and asked why hadn't I been contacted or my card been charged!
Failing to refuel is not a crime in any country, yet Avia weaponised the police to humiliate and terrify their customer. I was left shaken, worried about being arrested, and nearly missed my flight.
Only AFTER this ordeal did they contact me --spamming me with eight calls in a row while I was detained at this behest.
On top of this, though minor in comparison, at pickup, they informed me that my Mastercard was not acceptable for the security deposit. Instead, I would have to pay an outrageous sum, five times the cost of the entire rental. At 9PM, stranded in a foreign country with no alternative transport, I accepted. Pure extortion.
Their so-called “cross-border insurance” is a scam. They charge around 4-5x higher than any other company and informed me I would need to purchase a green card to travel into Bosnia. Upon research, this is not true at all. The way they present this makes it seem mandatory when it is not.
At drop-off, they quietly slip in a €12 “cleaning fee”, poorly disclosed and clearly designed to gouge customers on the way out.
This company preys on tourists when they are most vulnerable, relying on intimidation, hidden fees, and outright scams. I’ve rented cars all over the world, and I have never encountered anything remotely this abusive.
Avoid Avia like the plague. Save yourself the nightmare and rent from literally any other provider.

We booked a rental car through DiscoverCars.com with Avaia Car Rental in Split. Upon arrival at the airport, we were told that our credit card would not be accepted, even though it was a physical Visa credit card as required in the terms for the deposit. They claimed the card was from a “virtual bank” and therefore could not be used to reserve the deposit. The only solution offered was to upgrade to the “full package” with maximum insurance and additional fees such as for fuel, so that the car could be rented without a deposit. This would have made the rental far more expensive than what we had already agreed to and paid for.
We already have rental car coverage through our travel insurance and did not want this. Our bank is not a virtual bank, and it is clear this explanation was used to pressure us into paying more. Their claim that this was “standard practice at all car rental companies there” is not true. We rented a car on the spot from another company at the same airport with the same card, at a lower price than what Avaia demanded.
Looking at other reviews now, I see that several other customers have had similar experiences. In our view, this appears to be a deliberate strategy to increase the price beyond what the customer has agreed to. We therefore warn others against using this company.
