Months of warning signs ignored
Years recalled its fresh food on 17 August 2026 over dogs developing sudden bilateral dry eye - but customer reports of the same symptoms go back to April/May 2026, months earlier.
In my opinion, that gap says everything. A company built on “transparency” sat on a growing pattern of harm for months before acting. That’s not an accident, it’s a choice - and it cost dogs unnecessary suffering in the meantime.
Think very carefully before trusting Years with your dog’s health.
What is going on here?
Rick (my cockapoo) has been having eye issues for months. Years just halted their subscriptions as - given the huge number of reported cases of bilateral dry eye, ulcers etc. - it is clear it is the food at fault. That’s bad. But what’s worse is the company’s response. I haven’t seen one message from a leader in the business. Besides one line in one long email, no ounce of genuine regret, sadness etc. to owners with sick pets. The comms has been a shambles and the “investigation” form shared to gather info (a week on from the initial news) is woefully ineffective - specifically I haven’t been able to report half of the information you would need to do a meaningful review. I’m not surprised they are rattled and inundated but I’m shocked by how disorganised and off key the response has been. I sent a picture of my dog with his new hair cut but obviously horribly sore eyes yesterday and received an email back saying “his new hair cut looks great” - are you serious? That and a copy and paste of the same mass email we all already received. It’s basically mockery. Get that customer service person out. Close this business down. You’re dealing with owners who have sad dogs, whose peers pets have gone blind. Wake up.
My dog has sadly developed sudden…
My dog has sadly developed sudden bilateral dry eye and now requires ongoing veterinary treatment. Years has since issued a recall following reports of many similar cases, with buckwheat in its revised recipe identified as a suspected cause.
If the investigation confirms a link, it raises deeply worrying questions about whether cost savings were put ahead of dogs' health (buckwheat is a lot cheaper than quinoa), as well as Years' supply chain and product safety processes.
Stressful recall experience
Stressful recall experience – lost trust and switched brands.
Refunded after dry eye scandal.
I was feeding Years fresh food to my dog, but the recent voluntary recall over buckwheat contamination and its link to sudden dry eye (KCS) has been extremely alarming.
Following the recall notice, I had to take my dog straight to the vet for a Schirmer tear test. While I am immensely relieved that her eyes tested healthy, the whole experience caused significant stress, disruption, and an unexpected vet visit.
Handling a sudden food switch and navigating the insurance claims process for vet bills isn't what you expect when paying for a premium service. The lack of proactive ingredient testing before this reached our dogs is deeply disappointing. I have completely lost trust in the brand and have safely transitioned my dog to another food.
I’ve never known Ziggy to eat his food…
I’ve never known Ziggy to eat his food like he’s eating this. He’s normally a very fussy dog but he cleans his bowl that well. I’m thinking he’s gonna take off the paint from it. One day he really does enjoy this food. I’m so happy I found something that he will eat fingers crossed it won’t be start being fussy again as normally he goes off food after a couple of weeks but at the moment he’s doing okay, and he loves his bow marrow gravy as well, thank you from Ziggy
Do not touch this company with a barge…
Do not touch this company with a barge pole! It has damaged mine and a lot of people’s dogs eyes! Darren the owner has also had other issues with a previous scandal at “muscle food”
I would not recommend this company at all!
My whippet developed sudden bilateral…
My whippet developed sudden bilateral dry eye while eating Years food (diagnosed by a specialist officially in June with the symptoms starting in April when vets visits started). Both of my dogs were also vomiting the food and stopped as soon as they were switched. Years later recalled all their fresh meals and linked it to a recipe change, but only after many dogs had already been affected — some for months.
The investigation is being run by the company itself, not by an independent regulator. They removed the ingredients list from the packaging (which is not legal), after the change in ingredients which I wasn’t aware of since the ingredients were taken off. The fact they had them clearly listed before signals to me that they understood this was necessary — it’s not their founders first company in the food industry either. They were offering credit instead of proper refunds — after a lot of pushback they have been only giving refunds on the last deliveries. I’ve seen worse for individuals who purchased the food at Pets at Home. My whippets condition started in April on their food, this simply is not good enough!! Everyone should be getting a refund since this recipe change took place in my option without needing to fight them over it, especially in the case of people affected like myself.
I would not trust this company with my dog’s health again.
Awful people, awful food
The current Years.com dog food recall has now affected my own poor boy, with problems with his eyes, which is incredibly upsetting.
During my time working there, my CS team leader Keira and management discriminated against me because of my disabilities (ADHD, Autism and migraines with aura). The customer support team were also treated extremely poorly. This had a significant impact on me and was one of the reasons I ultimately left.
I raised a formal grievance about my treatment, and was then told that paperwork relating to my case had conveniently gone “missing”.
I was in agony on a daily basis and, despite that, I only ever asked to work from home when I was experiencing a migraine. This was a hybrid role with a remotely working team, including people working remotely from different countries, so I didn’t feel this was an unreasonable request. Instead, I was asked to take sick leave because of my disability.
From my own experience as a customer, I also received trays containing bone fragments, blue plastic and hair. Other customers have publicly shared similar concerns on the company’s VIDs channel, including reports of metal machinery, which you can see for yourself.
I feel vindicated seeing this awful business finally facing its downfall, but my heart goes out to the dogs affected and my former colleagues who deserve so much better.
Karma is all I can say and yes I’ve had to re-edit this😂 As for you in particular - you know exactly who you are. Truly heartless. 🖕
P.S. - Stop trying to get people to take down their truthful reviews. You’re all absolutely awful people🤮
I had previously left a positive five…
I had previously left a positive five star review, one of my frenchies has allergies and in a bid to avoid medication every day I went to years.com a high rated food which seemed to be good quality. Initially pleased with the results both dogs loved the food and allergy issues gone, only to be replaced three weeks ago with dry eye. A potential life long condition with much more severe consequences then minor allergies.
Damage to dogs eyes
If i could give less than 1 i would. We have been battling to treat our dogs eyes since june after changing to Years in April to then be notified of the recall after a change in an ingredient. The company were forced to recall after owners, vets & opthalmists started making the link.desperate owners used the Years facebook page to reach out to other owners to have comments removed, cases were reported from march april but it took until August for a recall. My dog loved the food thats never been the issue.
But to learn of literally hundreds of dogs affected some having been PTS, blindness or left with a lifelong eye condition is devastating.a week ago i would never have thought id be writing this but now we are left with a once healthy dog potentially needing eye care for the rest of her life & the big financial cost that causes.

My experience with Years
My experience with Years
I wanted to share my own experience with Years, particularly because there seems to be so much negativity surrounding the recall at the moment.
I completely understand why people are upset and concerned, and I’m not trying to dismiss anyone whose dog has been affected. However, my personal experience with Years, both before and during this situation, has been very positive.
Whenever I have had an issue in the past, such as food arriving damaged and subsequently going mouldy, I have contacted Years and they have always dealt with it promptly and reissued the affected food. I have always found their customer service helpful and responsive.
During the current recall, I have contacted them with a number of questions and concerns and have received a detailed response. They have been open about what they currently know, what they don’t know, and the fact that they are investigating the possible cause. They have also recalled the food as a precaution while that investigation takes place.
I appreciate that this must be an incredibly difficult situation for the company and its staff, particularly with so many customers understandably looking for answers at the same time.
I also think it is important to remember that the investigation has not established that buckwheat itself is dangerous. Years are investigating whether there may have been an issue with a particular part of the supply, and other dog-food brands also use buckwheat.
I’m not saying Years shouldn’t be held accountable if the investigation ultimately finds that something went wrong. Of course they should. But I don’t think it’s fair to assume the outcome of an investigation before we actually have the evidence.
For me, the fact that they have acted, recalled the food and are carrying out further investigation is something I appreciate. I also appreciate the way they have communicated with me personally throughout this process.
I genuinely hope the investigation gives everyone the answers they need, particularly those whose dogs have been affected, and I hope Years are able to come back with a safe reformulated food in the future.
This is simply my personal experience, but I felt it was important to share a positive one too.
Poor quality
Sad to see that the company swapped out a safe ingredient for another ingredient that has a detrimental effect to the dog.
Couldn’t trust a company who do that.
The recipes are weird and not appealing to my dog. I used two meals before the recall and I ended up with the food dragged all over the floor.
Dissatisfied customer
Very disappointed to be told dog food has been recalled. You try to do your best for your pet only to find out that their dog food is contaminated. Also now have to feed my dog different food without being able to introduce it gradually. I hope they are going to follow up on this issue.
Metal shard found in meal
We had numerous problems with years, I’m just annoyed we didn’t switch away from them sooner. We had multiple mouldy packages and the worst was finding a large shard of metal in one of our dogs meals. Years assured us that they were investigating it to find the cause and made us feel like it was a genuine one off mistake. That was a year ago I’ve chased for multiple updates. Never had any more communication about it. No discount offered no compensation, no resolution from their ‘investigation’.
When they sent us the envelope to send them the shard of metal in, they sent us someone else’s address and details which is a data protection breach, when I informed years of this, it was not taken seriously. We thought we were doing right by our dog by giving him years food which is supposedly high rated premium food, I’m so pleased we switched from them two months ago in light of the buckwheat issue and I’m so sorry to anyone who’s dog has been affected by this.
Poor quality control and customer service.

DANGER - DO NOT FEED YEARS TO YOUR DOG
DO NOT FEED YEARS TO YOUR DOG, THEY COULD GO BLIND.
This company changed the recipe without informing customers, added cheaper buckwheat instead of quinoa and potentially contaminated buckwheat at that. Dogs have gone blind or had their eyes damaged through eating this food. They have known this and waited for weeks without recalling their food, potentially harming more dogs. You can read it in national news and there are Facebook groups for people affected. They are now non responsive to customers and I hope they go out of business. They are completely untrustworthy. DO NOT FEED THIS TO YOUR DOG!
Have been using years for quite some…
Have been using years for quite some time and for the past 2/3 months, my dog has been suffering from dry eyes, red eyes and severe irritation. Taken to the vets numorous of times, spent £1000+ to try to solve to now be toldi ts the food we've been giving her from years. Potentially will never get her entire sight back and being in pain is awful to see.
My dog has been very poorly the last…
My dog has been very poorly the last month or so and me and the vets couldn’t figure out the problem. Since going to the vets and paying a lot of money in vet bills he has been on chicken and rice and his symptoms have cleared up. I then read an article on the guardian about years being recalled due to over 150 dogs going blind and this is clearly the reason why my dog was poorly. Years have never once reached out to say about a recall or to tell me to stop feeing my dog. I have since messaged twice and not recieved a response. Really shocking service .
Disgraceful company
Disgraceful company. All for profit. Killing dogs and leaving them blind. Luckily my dog never liked their food. Would never use. Don’t feed your dog this food!!!!!
The recent experience with dry eye…
The recent experience with dry eye caused by the buckwheat they started to put in the food has been a nightmare as well as cost for vets will never use this food again
