I got my first job!

My First Job in Film got me... my first job in film!

As a uni grad, I found it really hard to actually secure work. I'd been applying away, had been to my university's career advice service numerous times, attended various Screenskills events and besides a handful of interviews, 2 years in I still didn't have a job.

I joined MFJIF to get some support - and off the back of my CV advice session, I improved my CV a tonne. My uni's career advice service had actually told me completely the wrong thing for the film industry, but Sam helped me highlight my skills in a way which actually works for production.

Off the back of a couple mentoring sessions as well, I stopped applying to runner roles, and really honed in on Camera Assistant positions.

After a month, I got my first placement on The Crown! The team were lovely and I finally got my first credit under my belt. I've now worked on a couple more productions, and I'm starting to get contacted about other roles too.

Huge thanks to the team - I wouldn't have made it this far without MFJIF!

This is appalling

This is appalling - I forwarded to my daughter who is trying to get a break in this world. The site says it offers mentoring etc but makes people pay. This shouldn't be allowed, it is exploitative.

MFJF is an incredible community, thank you.

I want to pass on my thanks to MFJF for helping with my CV and helping me understand what I needed to do to get my first runner job. Also, the monthly Career Clinic is amazing. Sophie is so helpful and listening to others in the some position as me, their advice and tips was great. MFJF is an incredible community, thank you.

Scam

Scam, Never do it
I wasted my ample amount of time making my full profile, if it is paid one, I would request you to inform the same at very beginning of the website, as we unemployed people will definitely won't have money to pump in. Common sense

I recommend to anyone the MFJF Virtual Mentor program

It took me three months and lots of applications but the best decision I made was to use MFJF and their virtual mentor program to support me. The monthly phone calls and weekly emails were amazing and gave me the confidence and answers I needed. Thank you to Sam and the MFJF Team!!

Realistic, encouraging and practical

Incredibly friendly, approachable, generous group of people at My First Job In Film. They provided practical tools and suggestions for early career filmmakers to expand their network and find like-minded artists. Thank you for trusting your attendees enough to keep everything presented as down-to-earth, rational and actionable concepts and not overhyping some magic formula for success. I’ll be looking for more opportunities with this group in the future.

Professional, Insightful and Interactive

The workshops are professional and insightful with some good tips, valuing our time/effort. Most of the conversation during the workshop was about the industry in the US (although it was completely relatable with universal concepts). I would be happy if they were some insights about the industry in the UK and how one can make the most of tools like MFJF in the UK, ScreenSkills and others. I would also suggest an idea, where in all of the workshops (regardless of the topic), the participants can network with each other by dropping their social media handles in the chat. This can happen at the last 10 mins of the workshop session.

Best CV Advice

Quite simply my major breakthrough after months of disappointment and never hearing back from applications was because of MFJF!

They helped me with my CV and Cover Letters and within a few weeks I was working full time as a runner!!

It’s taken me 6 months to get here. Anyone who thinks it’s easy and you can get a job with just a few applications is totally wrong.

My personal mentors!

I have been using MFJF since I graduated. I find it hard to cold call and network and so needed somewhere to help me make connections. It is the only place that makes this easy and has the roles I want.
I cannot praise MFJF and the team enough. I have monthly phone calls with them about everything, CV, job applications and advice.

So far I have 3 internships and my CV is far stronger and I feel like I am on my journey to become work in scripted development.

Thank you!

Absolute Rip Off!

Absolute rip off. I thought some the jobs sounded good so I applied for quite a few and then decided to pay to unlock more as it seemed a good investment. Not only do you hear nothing from the jobs you apply for you also almost solely just get job ads that you can find for FREE on any other job sites, complete waste of money. When I asked for a refund I was completely ignored by the customer service team, I then proceeded to email again as I had no response in a while which I finally got a response to, if you can even call it that. The responder was rude and sarcastic and was basically trying to make me feel stupid. They said they had no evidence of me emailing beforehand, which was a blatant lie. In regards to me explaining my issues on why I wanted the refund he said he wanted photographic evidence of every single job ad that can be found on every other job site. Are you actually for real? I’m paying for a service and that’s how you want to respond, never mind the tone of the message being sickening for a service I AM PAYING FOR, FOR NO REASON. Do yourself a favour and just apply on other job sites when you see film based roles because that’s all they offer. Nothing special at all, expensive service for zilch in return and disgusting customer service. I responded to the awful email I got from them saying I didn’t appreciate their tone etc. and I haven’t heard a peep from them since. Even if they still wasn’t going to offer a refund (which, of course not because their obviously scamming people as you can see from the other reviews who said they didn’t get one either), I still expected maybe a simple apology to the terrible customer service or them to cancel my subscription like I asked them to do TWO TIMES but nope, not a single thing back. I hope others think to check these reviews before paying for this so-called ‘service’.

Hi, we're so sorry to hear that you've had a bad experience. Please email info@myfirstjobinfilm.co.uk and we'll be very happy to explore this.

We have a huge range of jobs on our site, and each are labeled clearly! Most are shared exclusively with us are available to members to apply to, these are clearly labeled on the jobs board. Others are taken from the web and are free and open to anyone to apply to. We hope our clearly categorised jobs board helps to identify the opportunities that make sense for you and save hours of trawling the web!

We always encourage members to take full advantage of the many careers support services we provide, including CV reviews, workshops, career guides, our screening room and the opportunity to find other filmmakers to collaborate with! We think our membership is really reasonably priced for such services!

We always chase employers to share feedback with our applicants but unfortunately it's just not common practice. Applying and not hearing back is really tough, but all part of the process unfortunately. We'd be happy to have a 1:1 with you to help make a plan and support you in this process. Again, please reach out to our team when you can.

Are you kidding me

Are you kidding me. I attempted to get on and wouldn’t even open for me, no one was there. I also got there early waited till six and still… Nothing happened waste of time. I wish that what you offered actually worked for me at least which didn’t. That is my gripe. That is my review.

Hi Richard, we're so sorry! We think this might be one of the workshops hosted for our community in the USA last week?

Our host did have a little technical issue getting started but was able to start the workshop at 6:08 with apologies live and via email for the delay.

Our workshops are also hosted via eventbrite and you do need to log into your account to access the event live in that account. We do share instructions when you sign up, but if you sign up again and have any trouble just drop us an email at events@myfirstjobinfilm.com and we'll help you out!

Hope to see you at a workshop soon and apologies for any confusion caused this time!

Fake jobs, overall scam website

I signed up for the site and was paying for it for over 2 years. With literally 0 success not even a response from one company in over two years, nothing. it almost feels like a scam. What's worse is after a year I got an email saying my account was set to 'inactive' which means people couldn't see I was looking for work? I complained about this as why would I pay for a site if I'm not actively looking for work?? to which I got a response saying after 2 weeks they move everyones account to 'in-active' and you have to manually make it active again.?!??!

They asked me to take up the offer on CV advice which is a quick 15min chat which when you go to book in a session there isn't one available until a month. NUTS

For £15 a month these guys are ripping off people in an already struggling industry, all you will get is a generic email to say a company (no name) has received you application LOL. I WANT MY MONEY BACK!!

- Currently employed in the industry no thanks to MFJF, have spoken to numerous people on set who have had very similar if not the same experiences.

Hi Shay,

We're so sorry to hear that you haven't found our community helpful and hope we can clarify a couple of things.

Firstly, we think there may be some confusion re your 'inactive account'. Our UK site offers the opportunity to set your availability as a runner. You have to actively set your availability week to week so employers always have an up to date list of who is available for work. You will only show availability or as "active" if you have listed your availability!

This is the page on our site: https://myfirstjobinfilm.com/UK/crewlist
Perhaps this is what you mean?

Your membership is active as long as you are a subscribed member and you can proactively search our jobs board, apply to jobs and use our career resources.

We're really sorry to hear you weren't able to book a 1:1 when you wanted to! We can't see a request from you on the system but if you get in touch via info@myfirstjobinfilm.co.uk we can happily set that up for you. It might have been that you looked during a quiet period during the holidays.

Finally, the industry is just really tough and though we always chase and encourage employers to share feedback, they are busy and usually they simply won't provide it. When they do, we always pass it on to our members. The industry is super competitive and it's hard to stand out. We always recommend tailoring your CV and cover letter to each individual application, putting a lot of work into it and then moving onto the next one since unfortunately it's more common to receive no response than a job. It's tough but just the way it is!

It sounds as though there may have been some confusion over to how to make the most of this community and our resources. We completely understand if you don't want to give us another go, but if you do, please email directly and we'll set up a call to go through all the different resources we provide and help you make a plan to get started!

Hope to see you again soon

Getting started in the film industry is…

Getting started in the film industry is never easy but MFJF caters specifically to people who don't have any previous experience and gives you resources to know where to start and what to expect, from CV advice to career guides to success stories. I found my first work experience in the film industry here and would recommend it because the job listings here are very good.

I’ve been really really lucky as I got my first job within a couple of weeks since joining MFJF, and then a second job a few weeks after that. I think the career resources are really useful and the cv and cover letter guides helped to improve my own cv to industry standard too. I think you have to be proactive and keep persevering when applying as it’s a competitive industry.

I signed up to MFJF because I've had…

I signed up to MFJF because I've had film jobs from Facebook, Mandy, other creative websites (for FREE) but it hasn't been consistent, so I thought I'd give MFJF a try as they're specifically posting TV/film jobs.

However, I have not had luck with the positions I've applied for and it's been 6 months in. Countless Work Exp., Internships, and Trainee positions and I have not heard back from ONE. I know this industry is tough but I doubt my application is terrible considering I've got jobs before. Even unpaid Work Exp. I am struggling to get from this site.

And I am constantly seeing most of the same Work Experience, with the same companies, readvertised shortly after the deadline. I think for £14.99 per month, the MFJF could be doing more to track your job application, liaise with companies to ensure they're getting back to people within a time frame because paid access to advertised jobs and receiving a receipt via email to say you have applied for a job is not worth the price. And especially not worth it when you find out the name of the companies advertising jobs, which you only have access to the name of the company when you pay to updgrade.

Hi Ivery,

We’re so sorry to hear that you haven’t been hearing back from jobs. Unfortunately, as frustrating as it is, this is really common in the industry as it’s just so competitive.

We always proactively follow up with companies asking for feedback we can share with MFJF candidates. If we get it, we always pass it on to you.

Did you ever book a 1:1 with one of our team? One of the best things you can do is book a session so we can go through your resume with you and share feedback and advice for building up experience.

Breaking into film really isn’t easy and as you’ll see from our members success stories (https://myfirstjobinfilm.com/UK/success-stories) it’s something you have to really keep working at, but with some good feedback and a lot of determination it can pay off.

Please do get in touch via your account to book in some one to one career advice with one of our experts!

Best of luck

Do NOT enable them by upgrading

They lure you in by advertising that you should join today for free to access jobs and then leave out the fact that in order to apply for jobs you have to upgrade and pay money. Then they send you a list of job alerts every week, none of which you have access to unless you can pay. This is gross, you shouldn't have to pay to apply to jobs. Know your worth and what you bring to the table!

We're also adding content to our free membership all the time to help those who aren't ready to Go Pro get a better insight into the film industry. If you look through the materials on there you'll find a lot of really great CV advice, guides to different departments and a growing list of videos and content including advice from people who have been in your shoes.
