Poor Customer Experience and Mishandled Return – Lost a Longtime Customer
To Whom It May Concern,
Earlier today, around 11 a.m (6-8-2025)., I visited Menard's in (Morton Grove, IL 60053) to purchase a new Moen shower kit. When I got home and opened the box, I immediately noticed the packaging had been re-taped and was no longer factory sealed, likely a customer return that had been placed back on the shelves without inspection.
Sure enough, when I checked the contents, the Moen water valve—the critical component that goes behind the wall—was missing from the box.
After running some errands, I returned to Menards the same day (6-8-2025) around 3 p.m. to exchange the incomplete kit. Unfortunately, the chrome model I originally purchased was now out of stock, so I picked up the exact same kit in brushed nickel, which was priced $20 higher.
When I tried to explain the situation and requested an even exchange due to the inconvenience, I was told by the returns associate that I couldn’t do an exchange because of the price difference. I explained that the only reason I was back was due to Menard's reshelving a returned item without checking that it was complete. I had already lost an hour of my day dealing with this issue, which could have been avoided with a simple quality check.
I then asked for a refund. Since the original purchase was made just four hours earlier, I requested that the funds be returned to my card immediately or, if that wasn’t possible, to receive the refund in cash. The associate didn’t know how to process that, so we had to call in another employee. After a 15-minute wait and speaking to a third person, I asked again for an even exchange due to the hassle I’d gone through. Again, I was told no. I was also informed that because I had tapped my credit card when purchasing, I couldn’t receive a same-day refund to my card.
At that point, I said I would take my business elsewhere. I’m in the middle of a full bathroom remodel that will cost thousands of dollars. Losing a loyal customer over $20—especially when the mistake was on Menard's' end—feels incredibly shortsighted. What could have been a simple solution to retain a dependable customer turned into a frustrating experience that pushed me to go to Home Depot instead.
I won’t be returning to Menard's. It's not about the $20,it’s the principle and the lack of accountability for reselling an incomplete product. You had the chance to make things right and keep a customer. Instead, you lost one.
Sincerely,
Brandon
I avoid Menards if at all possible
I avoid Menards if at all possible for the purchase of anything from their yard. It is absolutely the most customer inconvenient unfriendly experience I can think of at any store. I needed top soil. First I went in the store and was directed to a desk in the back. After 10 minutes I got an order ticket to take to the cash register in the front and had to wait another 10 minutes to pay. Next I had to drive around to the yard gate. There was one attendant checking outgoing. You scan the barcode and the gate lifts. I drive through, stop and get out to asked if someone would load me. He tells me to move I'm blocking the gate, lol. Yeah the guy behind was blocked with the same question. He calls my order in to the yard and tells me to drive back...lol it's not over. The guy on the fork truck directed me to customer pickup parking places, So I go and sit there for another 10 minutes. Nobody came out to help so I went in. It was the same desk I was at originally lol. Finally after another 10 minutes I was loaded. Then on the way out the guy at the gate took another 5 minutes to count the bags of top soil, that they had loaded. It would be easier to get gold from fort knox. I am done with this place. Most horrible shopping experience in my life.
I have been a customer of Menards for…
I have been a customer of Menards for well over 30 years. I have often participated in the online flash sales. The last time they charged me $4.20 for process fees even though the ad said "free ship to store". Apparently the $4.20 is needed to keep them from bankruptcy. I am irritated by it and their response. It will be my mission to do all I can to shop elsewhere and they can have my $4.20. hopefully last time there, lousy customer service!
Menards Delivery is a Joke
Ordered vinyl flooring glue, paid $7 for delivery. It was supposed to be delivered yesterday but wasn't. Of course we needed it ASAP because we're putting flooring in a rental.
I call a day later to ask what the progress is only to be told I can come pick it up and they have no idea how ill get my delivery charge back. 🤔 Pretty terrible if you ask me.
Also, i had no idea they use Doordash, what a joke. Needless to say, ill never use Menards in Hilliard, Ohio again. Horrible service, smh. 🤬
Menards in Southport
Menards in Southport, IN. Used to be a frequent shopper. Bought a washer & dryer. Dryer did not work. Dryer turned on one time then wouldn't turn on. Got shocked. Has a short in it. Took back to Menards, they said it was less than a week, we could
return it. Tried the washer next, 2
days later, sounded horrible defective. Took back to Menards, they said we were 1 day late. Can't return. Buyer beware especially their policies. Word of mouth is so powerful.
no help in departments!
Always no help in departments! Many milling about though.
Use to get military discount - nope- just a rebate to use in store!
Don't trust their rebate program
*I WAS ISSUED A NEW REBATE TODAY*
Don't trust their rebate program. I sent an email to inquire on my rebate after 6 weeks and they issued a stop payment on it. SCAM SCAM SCAM.
Greedy and greedier $1.40 Processing fee rip off
Any time you order on line or special order they charge a $1.40 processing fee per item --If I need 10 different plumbing parts $14.40 fees even if parts only cost $1 each for this reason I'm going more and more to Home Depot (who also price matches and as pro member 10% off always and instantly!!(no rebate to mail in!! )
For over 40 years as a contractor--I purchased almost exclusively at Menards--no more!!!
Pricey delivery Charges and fees
I just ordered 10 boxes of stuffing mix. The delivery charge and fee cost more than the product. I didn't pay attention to the charges. Dumb me!! I'm a new customer and this will be the last time I order from them. The shipping is ridiculous. I'm glad I ordered 10 so I will have extra. The product must be discontinued because this is the only place I could find it.
Ban Menards - Eau Claire DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS
Never, ever will I shop at any Menards again. The staff doesn't care because they aren't paid well and are treated like crap by John Menard. John is hated by all the employees. They will say it outright. The items he offers are garbage, cheap crap. The boards are warped, full of knots and broken. They "lose" rebates for thousands of dollars of purchases. Not the $20 purchase. He is greedy and corrupt. I spent 30 min trying to buy one board outside and 4 men had no idea where it was. I was shown all over
After ordering and receiving the…
After ordering and receiving the delivery of 2 pallets of large pavers, we noticed one entire pallet had a manufacturing defect. We discussed our concern with store leadership and were assured they would assist us. Not only did they locate another pallet, store leadership assisted in the removal of the defective pavers (as did the semi driver!).
We are beyond grateful for their professionalism, attentiveness and service.

Ordered 9 outdoor lighting units from the Sedalia, Missouri Menards store. Picked up order and one box had been taped up and marked with a marker " Checked! It's OK!" It was missing some mounting hardware. Spoke to a Manager on my second call. First call rang lighting for several minutes with no answer. Manager said he would send another light so I would'nt have to make a 60 mile round trip. Do not accept re-taped merchandise! Call before picking up orders and verify that there are no re-packaged items in the order.
Update 5-20-25. I received another previously opened box from Menards via USPS. This box was missing more mounting hardware than the original opened box. Contacted Menards in Sedalia, MO. Said they would send another. Hopefully Menards can attempt to fill this order on the 3rd try but I'm not holding my breath!

I purchase a lot from Menards thinking I’m going to get my rebate and it never comes and they never seem to know why . I’m out of 1500 in rebates and telling me it got lost in the mail .
Terrible store and the "rebate program"…
Terrible store and the "rebate program" is a complete joke. Even after class action lawsuits, they're still screwing people on rebates. Menards isn't worth it, go to Lowe's you won't miss anything by skipping Menards. Whatever you do, do not trust them. They will receive your rebate request quickly then throw them in a pile that says don't open or process for 30 days then they go as slowly as possible and try everything to deny your rebate. I know because I worked at the office and I think people should be aware.
I love the store
I love the store, the prices and the rebates. But apparently disabled people aren’t welcome because NOBODY works there. You can hear crickets chirping. Absolutely cannot find ANY HELP what so ever!!!! And when you complain you get useless tips and brushed off.
helpful and caring
They are so helpful. They care about their customers. Thank you for your caring help. Don't ever change

Worst Customer Service EVER
I ordered a piece of lattice to replace a piece that had broken during a storm. It showed in stock that day at my local store. I got an email that part of my order was ready, but the email didn't say what part. I fired up my truck (which gets roughly 12 mpg) to go get it, but the only part that was ready was the 6 garden bricks I had ordered, which I could have gotten without wasting $10 in gas. Two days later I got another email saying that my order was ready, so once again I took the truck to pick up 2 boxes of screws and be told the lattice was ordered and would be there in 3 weeks. A month later, after the truck was broken down and raccoons had built a nest under my porch and caused $1200 worth of damage to electirc wires where the lattice was to be placed, I emailed them asking where my lattice was. It cost me another $450 to have the raccoons removed. 2 days later I was told there was an error that displayed the item was in stock when it was actually special order, but they still made no attempt to locate my missing item and refused to answer any questions. After five or six times going back and forth through email they told me the lattice had never actually been ordered and asked me if I needed it re ordered. I told them I still needed it, since no other store in my area carries it, and that they needed to make it right by including free delivery. In an attempt to deflect responsibility, they said they couldn't change it and I would need to talk to someone at the store, where they told me they were orderin it but never actually did. Sick of wasting my time, money and energy trying to get what I had paid for and should have already had, I told them they could find a way to do it, again asking why it was never ordered. Instead of making any attempt to correct their mistake, they canceled the order, claiming I had not told them I still needed what I ordered and repeatedly told them I still needed. On top of that, they only refunded me the price of the lattice, and not their ridiculous $5 ordering fee for items I would have otherwise just gotten myself. DO NOT order from Menards, they don't care about their customers and refuse to correct their own mistakes, in fact, they even charge you for them. I've honestly had better customer service at D*ck's Last Resort.
