make yourself a favor, don't rent from Hertz

I would like to report the incredible treatment to which my family and I were subjected by a Hertz agent in Lisbon last December. We went to Rua Castilho to rent the car we had book few days earlier. The agent started working on the contract and for a rent of about 260 € he requested a deposit of almost 2000 €! In addition he did not want to explain the reason for this request. As the only alternative to avoid such a high deposit he offered to purchase of a supercover policy at 30€ per day which would have more than doubled the cost of the rent. When we refused to comply with this request, he refused any payment from us with the excuse that the card used to make the reservation did not have the plafond necessary to cover the deposit. On the other hand he also refused other 2 credit cards. As a consequence we found ourselves in the middle of our holiday without a car and - additional surprise - we were charged a cancellation fee on our return. The HERTZ customer service in Italy answers one email per month and does not answer the phone. The emails are standard answers that obviously deny any responsibility of the company. I wish I could give less than a star if I could, but I will make sure never to rent from Hertz anymore and always ask in writing a confirmation of the deposit. Once they have your money they always find a way to charge you for something!

Shame on you Hertz

Shame on you Hertz! Do not use!! Unbelievably BAD service. Arrived at Lisbon airport and waited in a queue for 3.5 hours (!) to do the paperwork, even though we had pre-booked on line. It gets worse-we then went upstairs to collect the car and had to wait in another queue for an hour to collect the keys. We were in the airport longer than we had been in the air from London. I have rented many cars at airports and never experienced anything like this. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! This ruined the beginning of our holiday. Shame on you Hertz.

Scam artists

Scam artists. Overcharged me for insurances I didn’t agree to and refused to refund. I trusted Hertz as a large, reputable brand. Not any more.

They are scamming on the extra…

They are scamming on the extra insurance and local charges, they tried to charge me 320 euro for 4 days in January. I refused the changes to the contract at the desk and went next door to eurocar despite being a 'goldcard' member and renting 3-4 times per year for over 12 years now from Hertz at Faro.
No integrity

Hertz Lisbon - MILEAGE SCAM. Read before hiring with them!

Hertz - Lisbon Airport. MILEAGE SCAM - READ BEFORE RENTING.
I hired a 7 seater for a villa holiday in Portugal in April half term. Pick up was fairly quick. They obviously tried to flog the usual over-priced ‘hire car excess insurance’ with the usual scare tactics but I had got my own policy online for about £15 for the whole week before we left the UK (There policy was about £15 a day!) They took a fairly large deposit in the card which I was expecting and tried to up sell me extra mileage as I had apparently booked a deal through a comparison site which gave me 420km. I was only going to the villa and back and a few beach trips so I decided that was plenty and managed to avoid the hard sell on this one. I was shown photos of the car condition on a screen and signed it, for my keys and went to collect the car. Luckily I opted to have these photos sent to me on email. The car was fine and we used it on holiday fine and filled up to the brim just outside the airport on the way back before returning. Luckily I took my own photos on return, including the odometer, just to prove condition etc. I didn’t think anything of it until about a week later I was sent my credit card bill and I saw a charge from Hertz for around an extra 120 euros. I immediately called Hertz Uk ( If you have this problem do not try speaking with the branch abroad as some have mentioned-I’d imagine your inquiry will be a far more difficult experience). When I got through the lady told me I’d been charged the money for tolls (9 euros in total) and excess mileage. I stated that I’d only done around 300km and had a 420km allowance. She told me that according to Hertz Lisbon I’d actually done 780km! I knew I hadn’t. That was over double the trip we’d actually done. Fortunately I could prove the returned mileage but they were stating that I’d picked up the car with a different mileage than it had on. I’d not taken a photo of the ‘out’ mileage, but I had reset the trip counter so knew exactly what I’d done. Then I remembered the email they’d sent me, and luckily in the condition report photos you could just make out the correct ‘mileage out’ and so I forwarded this as proof. It took about another week for a credit to appear on my card, although it wasn’t enough as I’d already been told that my tolls were around 9 euros total, so I wrote back and another week later we were finally square. Having read other reviews (which I hadn’t thought to read before booking!) this seems to be a very common practice with Hertz Lisbon. If you do hire a car with them I recommend taking condition photos of before and after including mileage out and in photos just to cover your back. Obviously it’s the last thing you think of and can be bothered with, especially when going on holiday having travelled with kids who just want to get to the villa, but it might save you a headache later on!

Horrendous Experience. Pure loot

I rented a car from Hertz Portugal in the month of April. I was invoiced for approximately EUR 300. Since the time I've returned the car there have been multiple debits on my card. I haven't received any reason for those debits. And so far I've paid more than EUR 500 for an invoice of EUR 300.

We reserved a car at Lisbon airport by…

We reserved a car at Lisbon airport by HERTZ. The lady at the counter needed a drivers licence, an ID (which was given by my boyfriend as he was the driver) and a credit card, which was mine. She said, the drivers credit card is needed. My boyfriend doesn’t have one. She said it’s not possible. She needs the credit card from the person who drives the car.
We then cancelled and went to GOLDCAR, where they didn’t even blink about this issue. Definitely not recommend HERTZ, but GOLDCAR, also because they really treat customers very nice and do everything to make one happy!

I am leaving this review based purely…

I am leaving this review based purely on the response from the company and the attitude of the lady at the Hertz Bristol airport rental place this morning. We booked online and paid in advance, when we turned up we were told the van was not available. In total we and our parents had traveled over 6 hours to get to the rental van place and 4 people had booked the day off work. We could have seen past the error if they had dealt with it appropriately. Instead, the lady tried to put the blame entirely on us, saying that if we didn't want to risk the van not being available we shouldn't have booked online. We did not get an apology nor any recognition of the mistake, not to mention compensation, and were simply told it was our fault. I am absolutely appalled. We have made a formal complaint. We have also contacted trading standards and if we don't get to a resolution that we are happy with we will be taking it to the ombudsman. It is a real shame because we would have happily accepted that mistakes happen but we are not prepared to accept the blame being out on us.

Awful

Awful. Every time I find myself unfortunate enough to end up using them.

Rental price for one week more than doubled for returning a car a couple of hours late.

They basically make their money by ripping people off with fairly well hidden charges.

Avoid like the plague.

Do NOT use Discover Car Hire and/or…

Do NOT use Discover Car Hire and/or Hertz-Dollar in Lisbon. I recently rented a car with Discover Car Hire and was quoted $127 for a three day rental. The voucher had a mileage limit that could be unlocked at 18 EUR /day. Hertz said their charge was 80 EUR/day at the rental counter. I called discover car hire and they said to pay the charge and that they would reimburse me. Upon closer look at the Hertz receipt, 45 EUR is listed for unlimited mileage and 150 EUR for a "vehicle upsell" charge that discover car hire will not reimburse. Both companies are unethical and will try to scam you, Stay far away!

Please be careful when signing a contract

Please be careful, They are trying to sell you extra and they only mention a sum, which sounds is for the complete rental, but it is per day.
Would not recommend this HERTZ location at all. THIS is not HERTZ standard.

Hidden costs hidden on purpose! A SCAM.

Avoid HERTZ, THIRFTY PORTUGAL. This rental car company will charge you extra fees with no mercy. Massive warning if you do not have a credit card! Our bill went from €73 up to €200 purely as we don’t have a credit card.
I’ve rented with hertz/thrifty all over Europe and my debit card was never a problem. The Portugal branch is a disgrace.

The worst experience I have ever had

The worst experience I have ever had. Let me begin by saying I have never left a review for a company good or bad, but my experience with Hertz was so awful I needed to say something. My boyfriend and I hired a car in Copenhagen for the weekend, the car wasn't what we booked but in the end we decided that didn't matter (although I will say that the opening hours are wrong on the website) and when we returned the car on a Sunday evening, my boyfriend parked the car in the designated spot out the front of the office and dropped the keys in the return box. A week goes by and we didn't receive a receipt, until they send us an email claiming we'd taken the car for 10 days, not 2, then they took a lot of extra money off my credit card. It's been over a month now and I still haven't received a refund, which is a substantial amount of money, despite them finally accepting they made a mistake (at first they refused to believe it was their fault and my boyfriend had to take time off work to try and sort the issue in person). Additionally, they have barely communicated with us throughout the entire process, so we've been completely in the dark as to why it all went so horribly wrong. I could go on, but if I were you, I'd choose another company.

Warning never book from Hertz

Warning never book from Hertz! They will ruin your vacation, as they did mine.
I have never in my life had such a bad experience with the costumer service from what is supposed to be a big professional company.
First I booked a car for 5 persons in Lakewood, Colorado (close to Denver. We landed in Denver Airport from Austin). This booking had the confirmation number: H47242415F1
Then I needed to change my booking because one more friend wanted to join the trip. So I called the costumer service on the 7th of november to get help with modifying my booking so I could get a car that could contain 6 people. The guy I talked to was very rude, and not helpful at all. My task for him was to find a cheap car that could contain 6 people and the location should be around Denver, Colorado. He kept saying he knew nothing about the area and I should give him the different pick up locations and then he could search. After a very long talk, I managed to get a deal from the same location in Lakewood, Colorado, which seemed reasonable. The guy from costumer service said he would sent a confirmation mail. Nothing happened so the next day I called again. This time the guy who was helping me was much nicer. And I kept repeating how it had to be near denver, colorado. And he made the same booking for me, and I received a confirmation mail (confirmation number: H47841517B8). In the confirmation mail it said Lakewood, so I thought everything was in order. However when I landed in Denver Airport and wanted to pick up the car, I went to the email and saw that the location was in Lakewood, California, I noticed that when I pressed the google maps option in the mail. I thought to myself, this can't be true, I choose Lakewood, colorado when I booked online by myself, and specificly said to the 2 guys that I was looking to get a car from somewhere around Denver, Colorado. So I called the hotline/costumer service, and the women I talked to (who barely spoke English) said I had booked it in California, and the only thing she could do was to request a refund. She also told me that they had no cars for 6 people avaible in the 9-11 locations around denver, co. So I thought that maybe the guys I talked to from the costumer service had changed it to Lakewood, California. My problem at this point was that I was still in Denver Airport many hours after I should have picked up the car at 11pm (on the 21st of november 2017) in Lakewood, Colorado. So we tried to call different car rental companies, but no luck. At that point we were desperat and thought maybe it was better to talk to Hertz face to face. So we took the shuttle bus out to the Hertz location in Denver Airport. Here they were very friendly. And to my great surprise they showed me that my booking with the confirmation number: H47841517B8 was in fact in Lakewood, colorado, even though the mail I got from Hertz said it was Lakewood, ca. So there was apparently something wrong with the system. Eventhough the same car was more than 100 dollars more expensive in Denver Airport as opposed to Lakewood, colorado we accepted it, because this was our Thanksgiving vacation and the idea of the trip was to go hiking in the Rocky Moutains. However due to the delay we lost a day of hiking in the Rocky Mountains and paid more than 100 dollars extra to rent the same car. So the amount we want refunded is not just the difference between the Lakewood, co price and the Denver Airport price, but a lot more. It meant that 6 students from Denmark lost one day of hiking in the Rocky Mountains. This meant that we had to make a extension of the rental, because we had lost one day in the nature, so we extended it for 60 dollars for one day (returning the car around 9pm on the 26th of november, we had to return it before 10 am 27th of november. But we were flying out of Denver Airport around midnight between the 26th and 27th. So the 160 dollars plus what Hertz wants to pay for ruining the first of 6 days supposed to be enjoyed in the Rocky Mountains and not talking to costumer service that barely speaks english and gives you false information for hours

Hidden charges

Hidden charges, unprofessional staff and very underhanded in billing for every conceivable extra. Hertz are usually flawless but this particular location are a stain on the brand.

Stay away from Hertz Portugal

Stay away from Hertz Portugal. I rented a car in Lisbon last month. Unexplained extra charges billed a month after I returned home. No receipt. They also charged for CDW insurance and gas even though I refused multiple times.

I'm now contesting the charges with my CC company but not hopeful.

Fraudulent!

WARNING!! Check out all Costs When Renting From Hertz

WARNING!!! We rented a car at Hertz Faro Airport through AAA in US. It was the worst experience we have ever had in renting a car. We have rented cars in Portugal for the past four years. Hertz was the worst. Never again!! Hertz doesn't bother to look at the car for scratches or damage before you take the car. But when you return they go over the car with a magnifying glass and invariably find some small issue. We were charged 195 euros for a scratch. I feel as though they have charged several car users for the same scratch. We were not the only ones having a problem. Two other renters returning cars at the same time were arguing about the same kind of problem. In addition, there were several hidden charges that were never explained to us in advance. This has NEVER happened before. No wonder they are rated so poorly. I should have read the reviews before I rented. I trusted AAA. Now I will take it up with them.

Today Euros 155 has been charged to us …

Today Euros 155 has been charged to us and taken from the account. I am told this is for the extra miles we did. I can confirm we did not use the 591km (approx. 637 miles) we are being charged for.

We picked up the car on Thursday 6 July at around 10:30:

1. We drove 25 minutes from Faro airport to Vilamoura, Quarteria where our villa was based (Rue Melvin Jones).
2. Over the next few days we drove the car a handful of times to the Marina (which is approximately a 5 minute drive) and back.
3. We drove 25 minutes from Vilamoura, Quarteria (Rue Melvin Jones) to Faro airport the morning of Sunday 9 July and returned the car at approximately 08:15

Charging after a month without receipts or notification

So I had my deposit returned in full, all good so far. After a month, my credit card was charged for £17, £14 and £1.50 in 2-day intervals by the Portuguese and Spanish Hertz: no receipt, no e-mail, no phone call. AMEX has refunded these charges. I'm very sorry to give a bad review but this is just unacceptable retail behaviour bordering fraud. Just avoid them. At least I will never bother with them in ANY country EVER again.
