Worst experience ever d

Hertz treats its customers like criminals - see the news articles about Hertz having customers falsely arrested . Hertz tried to do the same to me. Hertz called me today threatening to report me to the police and arrest me for not returning a car when I had already returned it three days earlier. Took hours of going through AI agents and finally a human to get this resolved. Terrible, sloppy service. First car smelled like weed and I had to waste time getting it replaced with another. Worst Hertz experience I have ever had. Wont ever go back. Do not rent from Hertz.

Charged 11 days of rental for a 1 day rental and provided a car with over 107K miles on it

3/13/2026 I rented a Hertz vehicle in Jacksonville Florida where I was provided a Toyota Camry with >107k miles, This vehicle condition was noted as follows : hole in the floor, seat with tape over another hole, a fuzzy steering wheel cover that was not removable, wax written numbers on windshield removal of which seemed unsuccessfully attempted.
When I returned the vehicle I was told they were unable to refund the rental because it was prepaid but they did give me $200 in Car rental Certificates.
I rented another vehicle on 3/25/26 in Raleigh, NC.
that I used rewards points to pay for 1 day of the rental and I intended to apply the $200. in Customer Satisfaction Car Rental Certificates to the $153.32 balance. When I returned the NC rental at approx. 4:30pm on 3/26/2026 the Hertz representative, located inside of the Wilmington, NC airport terminal, stated he was not able to apply the credit and that should have been done at pickup (i was told they would need to be applied at drop off, during my pick up) , he was also unable to provide me a receipt for my return and therefore I asked to take a photo of the log where he documented my return at 4:54pm.
On April 1st I noticed that there was still a hold charge of $654. on my checking account for this rental, at which time i called (and was told that the issue can only be managed via email) and emailed Hertz to inquire as to why this hold charge had not been removed. I did not hear back, other than an autogenerated response acknowledging my email.
On 4/7/26 I noticed another charge from Hertz for $3542.34 charged to my account via apple pay. I again called Hertz and spoke to a representative and emailed once again. I was told by the representative that I was being charged for an 11 day rental.
on 4/14/2026 I received an invoice for tolls incurred in Florida! 2 weeks after the rental was returned.

DO NOT RENT A CAR WITH THIS COMPANY!!!

If I can give this company all around 0 stars I will!! I usually do not leave any reviews but this company had me livid. Customer service was horrible as well!!
I had a horrible experience with them— long story short we made the reservation in January, our trip was in March the morning of pick up they called me to confirm our pick up, went to pick up and got told they did not have anything available for me my only option was to cancel or pay more! NO THANK YOU! That’s why we reserved ahead of time!

NEVER BOOK WITH THIS COMPANY!

NEVER BOOK WITH THIS COMPANY!! If I could leave the stars blank, I would have. Absolutely horrendous company.

On April 2, I made a prepaid reservation for a Nissan Rogue, with pickup at the Orlando Airport and drop-off in Miami. I booked this rental through my All Accor membership, trusting their recommendation of Hertz as a reputable partner. Upon arriving at the rental counter after our flight landed (after 11:00 PM on April 10), I was informed by the front desk employee that my debit card could not be accepted. I was then instructed to change the reservation into my husband’s name and use his credit card. This was confusing and inconvenient, as my husband was physically present with me and could have simply been added as an additional driver. The employee directed me to call customer service to make this change. However, when I did so, I was told that the reservation could not be modified because it was prepaid. This left us stranded at the airport late at night after midnight, with no viable solution provided by the Hertz staff. As a result, we were forced to cancel the original reservation, remain at the airport past midnight trying to resolve the issue, and ultimately leave without a rental car. We then had to pay over $60 for an Uber just to reach our hotel, something that would have been unnecessary had the original booking been handled properly.

Following the phone employee’s recommendation, we rebooked a new reservation online under my husband’s name and credit card. However, the drop-off location had to be changed to Miami Airport because it was the only affordable option available at that point. This is not the location we originally needed, and it has created additional inconveniences for our travel plans.

We travelled back later that day around 1:00 PM for our new reservation and again had significant issues. No where on the reservation does it say to bring a passport. As well, I was not told that we needed to show our passport on the phone when I called in multiple times. It says and we were told to ensure we had our driver's license. We were turned away because we do not have our passports, we left them in the safe at the hotel. We spent $36 via Lyft to get there and now had to leave again and spend another $70 for a round trip to come back and retrieve a rental. At this point, we're spending in Ubers and Lyfts what would have spent on the rental. I AM 21 WEEKS PREGNANT AND THIS HAS CAUSED A LOT OF UNNECESSARY STRESS AND TIME LOST FROM OUR VACATION FOR NO REASON! To add, the employee that we spoke to at the front desk this time confirmed that they could have added my husband to my original reservation the night before and take his credit card so why was my first reservation not honoured? Also, the manager Henry was very rude and did not listen to our concerns. This is absolutely ridiculous! The customer service is incredibly horrendous. If it weren’t for all other rental companies being sold out in this area, I definitely would not have booked again with Hertz, however, we needed the rental. Needless to say, going forward, I will of course NEVER book with this company again.

Additionally, the phone staff consistently disconnect the calls which requires you to continuously call back to resolve the same issue.

This entire experience has been extremely disappointing, frustrating and inconvenient, especially as this was my first time renting with Hertz. I typically use other reputable companies but chose Hertz based on All Accor’s recommendation, something I now regret given the circumstances.

Dishonest Fuel Charging Practice

Hertz has started charging for fuel by default, even if you fill the tank yourself and decline their refueling service. Instead of checking the gauge at drop-off, they simply add the charge to your bill and put the burden on you to prove otherwise. They’ll send an invoice stating you can submit a receipt for a credit, but it feels like a dishonest tactic to drive extra revenue. Heads up: Keep your gas receipts and check your final statement closely.

I reserved a car and paid for it 2…

I reserved a car and paid for it 2 months before rental with a debit card. When picking up car I had to leave a 500$ deposit refundable which was fine. But because it was a debit card they wanted to do a credit check on my credit report. That is BS. That needs to be clearly spelled out ahead of time!! They were fine using my debit card to pay the 465$ 2 months in advance. Never again HERTZ!! You SUCK!!

We need a car earlier than we excepted…

We need a car earlier than we excepted and we had a reservation at Avis. We could not change it, so we went to Hertz. We had a car asap, pick up at the airport - contract signed and away we went. The car was not "clean" outside by we need it would be dirty again so we accepted. The car was good. We returned the car one week later, same good service as when we got the car.

I rented a car for a personal trip and had a lot of my time wasted

I rented a car for a personal trip. I arrive at the airport, no cars are available so somehow they took the reservation but did not keep the reservation. They told me to sit and wait. I waited about 30 minutes and went back to the desk and said I'd cancel and just uber. They then magically had a car for me. All good. Then, I go to return the car; I refuel it to full, yet get charged $50.03 for refueling. I then go through trying to talk to a useless chatbot then wait 17 minutes for someone in another land to try and resolve my issue. 35 minutes in, I do get the refund but wow. A lot of time wasted and it feels almost scam like because not everyone checks their receipt. Hertz has really gone downhill and I'm definitely looking for a new rental car vendor. I'm at the presidents club level so I rent a lot of cars.

Made reservations in March for a vehicle at Hertz. Went to pick up the vehicle at the reserved date and time only to find out that they don’t have the vehicle there yet, someone was to return it by noon. It’s 9am. They suggested i call “customer service” to see about picking up the vehicle at a different location. That rep, wish i got his name, said that i could get it from the airport, 30 minutes away, for the same price. He said i had 24 hours to pick up the vehicle and at that point if not picked, my reservation would be lost. I go straight there because i need to get on the road, at this point, I'm already behind my planned schedule. I get to the airport, they can’t find that my reservation was changed to their location and they can’t book another reservation under my name since i still had one at the original location AND they don’t even have the vehicle i needed. I called customer service back and spoke with Nina, i explained everything to her, she placed me on hold saying Northridge has the vehicle. I asked her how am i to trust that, that’s the case, yall just sent me on a wild goose chase, so i asked her to call them and confirm. She said they aren‘t allowed to do that and that she could make the reservation for me. I requested her sup cuz ain’t no way in hell yall can‘t contact them and verify they have the vehicle, yall just told me to come to the airport and it’s not here. She puts me on hold and comes back saying her sup authorized her to call them, she called and they do have the vehicle and the price is now $100+ more. Girllllllllll bye, yall got me running around like crazy when i did what i was supposed to do. Requeted her sup, blah blah blah my sup will say the same, ok, give me the sup. I speak with Tim #1425316, allegedly, says he can’t change the price. I requested his sup, he doesn’t have one. He just places me on “hold” no music no nothing so i already know this dude just muted the dang phone. He gets back on talking about thanks for holding, pissing me off even more cuz no he didn’t have me on hold, you muted the phone. He says his sup isn’t taking calls and to try again in 30 minutes. At this point, I've been on the phone with yall 1 hour, i can and will hold for that sup. He says i can’t and hangs up..... Where the F is the customer service? Why are we continuing to outsource these companies. Where’s the compensation for NOT holding up to your end of the contract? Oh but God forbid i cancel on yall at the last minute. What do you have to say Hertz? Is this how you all treat customers?

A screw in a worn-out tire.

I rented a Hertz car in Ft. Myers, FL and drove to Naples, FL. After 2 days, a "low air" tire warning came on. I aired the tire twice. During one airing, I noticed a large screw in the tire. Around the screw was white leak sealer (I did not insert this stuff). I drove back (30 minutes each way) to exchange the car. Separately, all tires were worn out with over 33,000 miles. Hertz has issued a case # 63960190 and demanding $100. I have a picture of the screw with seeping flat sealer which they don't care about seeing. I asked two times if the tires were inspected "all the way around" but the answer was always "we thoroughly inspect all cars" which actually didn't answer my question. This is a poor response to a problem which I didn't cause and cost me valuable vacation time. Mike Bell

Don't bother to give you a car even when you book one

I booked a car with Hertz over a month before my holiday. I then arrived in Barbados, there was no-one from Hertz at the airport and I was told Hertz no longer had a stand at the airport. A representative from another car rental company called a representative from Hertz Barbados for me and they were told "sorry we ran out of cars and the office is closed". Hertz didn't even have the decency to cancel the reservation in advance. So I arrive in a foreign country with no car (that I booked over a month in advance) and I have to scramble to find a last minute car from another company. Awful behaviour from Hertz.

Horrible experience, bogus damages, lack of trust

I don't know how Hertz Windhoek has such a good rating. My experience was horrendous. First I booked a 2x4 to drive to a hotel. I then changed to a 4x4 to drive to the desert. Since i didn't drive much with my 2x4 I didn't book insurance. Worst idea. They were looking around and trying very hard to find bogus damages to squeeze money from me, as they were not in the "damages report". Thank God I had a video to prove that all damages were there before. Then when I rented the 4x4, the rental experience was problematic from start to finish. First they tried to push a cheaper car to us, because I heard then talking to each other they didn't have enough 4x4 to supply every bookings. After insisting i wanted group M, I purchased every single insurance possible, even though the Hertz employee insisted it wasn't necessary. I know how how problematic driving on gravel roads of Namibia can be, so I insisted I wanted every insurance possible. Then I had to wait 2 hours at the garage for the car to be ready and delivered to me. When it was delivered, the pressure hose was broken, normal to be included a 4x4, and the tank was not full, even though in the contract it stated full. Already delayed by 2 hours i still had to drive to the gas station to fill up the tank. During my trip I had a blown tire, so I went to one of the mechanics in the map provided by Hertz and alerted Hertz that we were coming there. Hertz confirmed on the phone that I was insured. However at the garage, the manager told us Hertz told them we were not insured. This made us waste hours calling hertz and asking hertz to speak with the garage manager. Completely waste of time and energy. By speaking with the garage manager, he told us that Hertz insured cars are always problematic, and the process is never smooth. I am never renting with Hertz again
