Nearly 7 weeks and still waiting for my refund. Terrible!!!!
Crooks and Trifty locations wrong. Thrifty in a Hertz?
Booked a car through Thrifty. No signs anywhere and all Google locations were wrong. For some reason it was in a Hertz. They charged me for an extra day. 5 days were paid for, I arrived 1 day late because I couldn't find the place due to no sinage and wrong locations on Google. They amended the contract for 1 day later so 4 days total, then charged me an extra day anyway ontop of the 5 days for picking it up 5 hours early.

My stories resonates with all of the reviews mentioned. We had absolutely disastrous fraud experiences with different rental companies in Johannesburg Aeroport (Woodford and Herzt) won’t even go into details, cause they are exactly what you guys have experienced. It’s sad and unfortunate to say, that fraud is being practiced all throughout South Africa. People need to be extra careful and alert through all times during your stay in this country…!!!
BEWARE OF HERTZ SOUTH AFRICA
Save your nerves - don't book!
We were a loyal customer to the Hertz Durban Airport Branch for years. Every time we have been in South Africa we rented a car for 5 – 6 months. Last year already I noticed a few dubious direct debits from my husbands credit card, they gave me some explanations which I did not really understand, it was a few hundred Rands, but back in Germany I forgot about it. This year, in accordance with our flight schedule, we booked a car from 10.2. – 7.5.23, the booking confirmation with the total amount was received 7.2.23. As my suspiciousness was awoken, I took a closer look to the credit card charges early in time. Right on the 10.2. they took the total amount for the 2 months and 27 days of R30,100.00. To my surprise on 13.3. they took another R8,000.00. After more than 50 email exchanges I still don´t know for what it is. The explanation “At the time you informed the branch you want a 3month rental, they explained and the total of the 3month rental costed R38100.00 in total.” makes no sense. Full 3 months rental would be cheaper and not more expansive.
Why should we have asked for 3month rental when our flight schedule was for 87 days???
Since we informed the credit card company of this unjustified charge and they retrieved it, we are being bullied by their lawyer and by GL Attorneys – a debt collecting agency – almost weekly. They even sent one reminder with my name to the cell phone of one of our friends in South Africa. I wonder how they got their number. When we are back in South Africa we will sue them for harassment and accusation.
Hertz service is fine until it comes to…
Hertz service is fine until it comes to the refund. I have been waiting two weeks now as I paid my refund in cash as I dont have a credit card and they dont accept debit cards for the refund. I rented a car through them as part of Gage car hire re my insurance company. Do not use this car rental company if you want your refund returned. They keep telling my insurers that they will furnish proof of payment of refund and nothing ever arrives
Forget about Refund!!!
Everything went well from bookings with a very dedicated front of the house sales person Rofilwa at sandton branch.Am convinced they employed someone who knows her job description.
TROUBLE is now on refunding my deposit. We now on Day 26 and nothing is being paid back. Emails are automated replies with only 1 vague reply since day 22. Surely there should be a level of honesty with such a company otherwise they will lose customers.
It's so disappointing!!!why keep someone's money for over 21 days ???? Is this not a scam?
Never had any problems.
Not sure why everyone so negative about renting in Hertz.
I always do either Hertz or their competitor Avis, usually long rentals and never had problem with deposit returns or extra charges, whatver was charged was communicated.
Hassle free and actually always got almost brand new car.
Don't damage the car and you will be alright .
On other note call center is busy and not quickly to respond to enquiry .
Stay away from this arrogant money monger agency...…
I hired a car with Hertz OR Tambo in early July for a week, returned the car back in good condition with a full tank. Then when I was due to get my deposit back, I was sent from pillar to post for over a month until I asked my car rental agency from the UK to intervene. Then they processed my deposit the same day. I am never hiring a car with them again, they are very unprofessional, greedy, arrogant to name just a few. I warn anyone who wants to hire a car with them, please stay away....
Be careful on monthly rentals
Be careful on monthly rentals - Hertz are snakes!! We paid R22,450 to hire a VW Kombi for a month. We had to give the vehicle back a few days early, even did a full valet before returning it and obviously filled up the fuel tank. A few days after returning it, they charged an additional R5,310 on the credit card without even having the decency to notify us. They said the charge is because we did not use it for the full month and that the terms and conditions stated that the rate can be adjusted if the duration is changed. So they probably rented the vehicle again and had the benefit of an early return but still decided to sting the previous customer.
Hertz poor follow-up and they cheat customers
Since Hertz Namibia is managed by Hertz ZA, so I have to write my review here.
Hertz Namibia airport is a scam. They sent me a fake invoice of repair order quote worth $120,800 for damages to the car which wasn’t incurred by me. These were mechanical damages, but when I returned the car, they said everything is fine and will refund me the deposit. I rented the car from 8-16 June.
Firstly, I left the airport just 25 minutes driving along the highway and the car suddenly stalled. It turns out the water pipe had burst and the green liquid had spilled out. Called them and they came with a replacement vehicle. They said is not due to my fault, probably vehicle hasn’t been maintained for a long time.
And then for the replacement vehicle - Suzuki Vitara - on the day of returning it back to the airport, the guy signed off and said everything was fine. Then before boarding my flight they came and told me there was “damage” a small crack on the windscreen screen and they deducted my whole deposit $18,000 without any explanation or repair quote. Returned the car on 16 June and till now I am having this transaction dispute with them, they are not responsive.
DO NOT RENT FROM HERTZ!
Zero Customer Care
I left my phone in a Hertz rental car at Johannesburg airport. We asked Hertz to please send us my phone and take all costs off our credit card. They refused to do so. We therefore had to pay DHL a whopping $700 AU to collect it. However DHL have been unable to collect the phone because Hertz are not returning DHL's calls about where to collect it and when, so three weeks later I am still without a phone. They honestly do not give a damn. Shame on you Hertz Johannesburg.
Less refund on returning the car
Took the car on Friday 20/01/23 at Mthatha Airport, returned it Monday as agreed, but before I retuned it,Sunday evening I went to Ultra city Shell garage to fill it up.The bars couldn't move until Monday morning.I went to the garage to report, they checked by filling it again, and was found to be full,I paid R73 for the added petrol, but still the gage couldn't tell.I went to Hertz and explained, telling that it's full. They said the car(NP200) has a problem when petrol is filled with the keys in ignition, the gauge doesn't work,so they'll disconnect the terminals(if I correctly use the car terms) then it will go up.On Thursday @00:19 I was refunded R6624.84 instead of R7000.I went there to enquire, they said they didn't disconnect the terminals(whose fault?) so they assumed I didn't fill it up,but after disconnecting they will refund it.Today is Monday,I still had to phone them to enquire cause they didn't refund me.Later they said they have refunded me amount less by R71,because when the car was taken to the garage for the next customer he filled it byR71,when I complain the guy said I should understand that the car has to be given to another customer with full tank,so because I don't want to understand he will refund the R71,as if now he's doing me a favor. My question is:Did they disconnect the battery to see that the gauge is working,as agreed? Then if when I return the car I travelled a short distance on returning, will the petrol be still on the position itwas when I fill it?
So can you introduce the process of coming and collect your car exactly at the filling station?so that the petrol remains full when you collect the car?
This is an inconvenience to me,receiving money in pieces while I paid once in full.
The guy sounded as if he's doing me a favor by refunding me and I did tell him that he's not doing me a favor, and I hate the phrase"you are not going to understand" so I'll refund you.Why do I have to understand?
I wish I could have read bad reviews…
I wish I could have read bad reviews here before my rental at Durban airport. I took contact with customer relation but nothing is moving.
I have been scamed for a missing radio Button which was missing from the beginning of the rental + charged for unjustified missing fuel. Despite proof of payement at pétrole station and a picture of the gauge at drop off
NEVER USE HERTZ
NEVER USE HERTZ, I proved to them that they ripped me off. Rented a car for 1 day (12pm Monday until 12pm Tuesday), Booked on their website and paid R1138.00, I returned the vehicle on the Tuesday at 13.04pm, and my final account reflected an additional charge of R1027.22 where they have charged for an extra day. Fine, but I went back on their website and did a test what would the cost be for a 48 hour period, and the website quoted R1400.00 which proves that they over charged me...First and last time usinh HERTZ, never trust a company that tries to rip you off
Great Car Hire Experience
Coming from UK always concerned that car hire companies are going to rip you off for invisible scratches and fuel etc.
Collection at CPT was quick and car brand new with only 5km on the clock.
2 weeks later with 2000km on the clock we returned the not so clean car with a full tank. The car was inspected with no problems. All the Hertz staff were professional & friendly and would certainly hire from them in the future.
Disappointing customer service
Had a horrible experience with Hertz. After a minor accident with the car, I was overcharged. The damage did not match the bill at all! Customer service is now ignoring me and I am starting to lose hope this issue will ever be resolved. Never again Hertz!
Just wish I had read these reports…
Just wish I had read these reports first.
Had a problem getting them to send me a copy of an accident report
Sent various emails and finally on 22June they acknowledged my email of 5 May and saying they humbly apologises for any frustration due to the delay in response turn around time and will strive to reply in 4 -6 weeks.
You could not make it up
Avoid Hertz in SA!!
Avoid Hertz in SA. I booked with them as its a world renowned brand that I thought I could trust. Collecting the car I was charged extra than what I booked for. The car itself was such low quality. I had to change my hotel booking as they were delayed sending the country certificate. Charged a sum after dropping the car off with no invoice to provide what it was for. Still not deposit back after 1 month.
Still now waiting for the refund. No response from Hertz after 7 reminders also.
We have extreme bad experience with Hertz Firefly South Africa. We booked two times from Hertz Firefly through VIP cars.one in Cape town and retuned the car to port Elizabeth. Another one Johannesburg airport.
In Cape town Hertz charged us extra around 20 USD in our credit card next day after returning the car. There is no explanation. No email receipt for this deduction. Where we had given the car same condition with full tank oil.
In second time , we met a small accident in Kurger. While returning, we had given all picture, police report etc. They have reduced the full deposit .They told they will refund the remaining after repairing the car. They will send the email with receipt. And the whole process will take 2 weeks. We have retuned the car on 9 the April 2022. Still now they didn't refund us. They don't bother to response after 7 reminders. We need our full refund and detail bill , so we can claim to our insurance. We have contacted resathertz.co.za; cust.relationsathertz.co.za
Looking for immediate action
Edit 1,: Still now no one contacted. 20 May 2022
Avoid Hertz if you can.
Avoid Hertz if you can.
I hired a car in Johannesburg for 2 weeks in February.
On returning the vehicle we were shown a small scratch on the front bumper. Took pics of this scratch - no more than 10cm in length and we’re told that they were going to retain my full deposit. Obviously flying back to the UK there was little I could do at that time. I’ve had no reply to my numerous emails to get my refund back. Basically I’ve been robbed of R17,000
You’ll never get your deposit back so avoid Hertz
