Friendly

Friendly, efficient and effective service. My eyetests are always thorough, as comfirmed by my wife, a research fellow in ophthalmology

The worst optican in St Albans

Avoid this "Used Car Peddler" type of service, an absolute farce.

If you value your vision and expect professional accountability, stay far away from Enhanced Optical Services in St Albans. My experience with John Snelgrove was a masterclass in technical incompetence, underpinned by a total lack of professional self-reflection.

I paid nearly £495 for Essilor Varilux XR Pro lenses that were delivered with a prescription so poorly executed that they were practically unusable. Without exaggeration, these were the worst lenses I have ever worn! Despite my clear feedback on severe "tunnelling" and the need for a wide intermediate zone for screen work, Snelgrove's approach was that of a profit-driven used-car peddler. I attempted to resolve the issue in good faith by trying a replacement pair, but they were even worse, causing massive vision distortion and a disorienting "swim-like" effect.

The most damning part of this ordeal was Snelgrove's dismissive attitude. When I formally reported that these replacement lenses were clinically unfit, his emailed response was: "There is nothing I can do about this." A real professional engages in self-reflection when a product fails twice; Snelgrove simply washes his hands of the patient once he has their money.

The proof of his failure is undeniable: I have since been to EYES on St Albans in The Quadrant. They successfully provided a perfectly working pair of the same Essilor XR Pro lenses, with the correct prescription and precise measurements. This proves the technology works; the failure was entirely Snelgrove's substandard technical work.

He is a local optician’s laughing stock for a reason. Before trusting this practice with your eyes, I strongly recommend you Google "John Snelgrove Enhanced Optical Services in St Albans" and review the business's reputation and history for yourself. If you want clinical expertise and a proper eye test, go to a competent professional like the team at EYES on St Albans at Quadrant instead. Don't waste your time or money on this absolute shambles of a service.
