Curry Leaf Cafe serves South Indian street food & craft beer from two colourful and unique dining spots in Brighton: the original Brighton Lanes Cafe and its Kemptown Kitchen in the eastern part of the city. Since opening its doors in April 2014, featuring in BBC Good Food Magazine’s ‘12 Best Indian Restaurants in Britain’ article, being listed as a 'Local Gem' in the Waitrose Good Food Guide every year since 2015 and more recently being named the ‘UK’s Best Craft Beer Restaurant’ at the SIBA Awards for the second year running. Curry Leaf Cafe - great. Uber Eats - awful.

After my complaint regarding Uber Eats - dreadful company - Curry Leaf Cafe was responsive and helpful. My experience of Curry Leaf Cafe has always been first rate, both in terms of the food and service. Uber Eats take note...

Hi Dave, really concerned to hear about this – completely understand why you felt compelled to complain online. Can you please email me at 'euan@curryleafcafe.com' with your Uber Eats order number so I can request a full refund on your behalf? We'd also like the chance to make it up to you, given how frustrating this experience must have been. Many thanks, Euan (co-founder)

What a disappointing experience.

What a disappointing experience.

To reserve a table had to give card details. Why?
Then get a notification that if i needed to cancel, the penalty would be £10 per person penalty.

Not impressed already, but was back in my hometown on holiday with 2 indian friends.

Arrived, seated, ordered drinks.

Waitress, 4 times in as many minutes at our table clicking her pen top wanting an order.

Not prepared to offer single items from starter menu (only available as a combined order)

Food was okay. Nothing special but 4/5.

Cider was £6.50 a bottle even though a quick check online suggests they pay £2.50 to buy in… Nice.

The bill arrives. Almost £6 Service charge on a £50 meal
Queried immediately (because the service wasn’t worthy of a tip) and was advised it was not optional.

Wouldn’t recommend against other local Indian restaurants regardless of the awards.

Curry Leaf Cafe at Home…

First order with Curry Leaf Cafe at Home! Menu looked OK, not very ambitious but OK, so let's try. Ordered Chicken Mappas (never had that before but in for a penny....) Free home delivery of the meal in the morning was good. Looking forward to eating this in the evening I searched for the reheating instructions....in vain. Had to look at their web site for info! The onion bhajis, samosas and the rice were great! However, the Chicken Mappas was a great disappointment! I do not know what cut of chicken they used but nothing I have recognised from previous Indian meals! The sauce just seemed like highly spiced gloop! What a total disappointment and we were so looking forward to the meal. Seems we must remove the lazy gene and get back to going to our local Indian for a takeaway!
Update following reply from Curry Leaf: The chicken was very disappointing, but thank you for your response! In view of good delivery and great starters review now upgraded to two stars.

Hi Freda,

Thanks for ordering from our Curry Leaf Cafe at Home service, and for taking the time to review. It's important to get honest feedback from customers in order to be able to improve what we do.

In this case, however, I do have to question whether a 1-star rating is a fair representation of the service & products you received.

To summarise:

1) The ordering process went smoothly and your food was delivered to you on time, and for free

2) The starters and side dishes were, in your words, "great"

3) The heating instructions were missing – definitely a minus point, for which I can only apologise. But they are clearly displayed in the product description and there is a big button linking to you the instructions in the shop that you ordered from.

4) You didn't like the Chicken Mappas, which seems to be the primary cause of the 1-star review. This is a traditional coconut-based dish from Kerala which uses whole spices in the sauce, as is normal in South Indian cooking. The chicken used is boneless thigh, not breast, which retains its moisture better during cooking and has more flavour. This isn't the kind of dish you'll find at your typical British high street Indian.

Tastes are subjective, of course. Which is why we have a policy of refunding or replacing any dish that the customer doesn't enjoy – had you let us know that at the time, we'd happily have taken the curry off the bill or sent another one for you to try. We want every customer to be 100% satisfied where humanly possible.

I'd ask you to take a moment to reflect on whether you feel that 1 out of 5 stars – which is very damaging for a small, independent brand like ours, and reserved for the very worst cases of customer service – is genuinely deserved in this case.

Kind regards,

Euan Sey, co-founder

Cold food, inadequate portions, terrible customer service.

Cold food, inadequate portions (as we’ve been there in person) at the price of £45, horrendous customer service - deliveroo - Dishonest company not willing to sort issues or rectify issues. Sharpen your pencil deliveroo & curry leaf. You lost a customer today. Sorry is not acceptable and action is necessary

Hi Fiona, we're very concerned to hear about your bad experience – for which I can only apologise. Unfortunately as you ordered through Deliveroo we haven't had the opportunity to communicate with you directly about the issues you raised, so I'd be grateful if you would email me your order number and a bit of info on exactly what was wrong. That way I can investigate and get this sorted – it is our policy to do whatever we can to leave the customer happy, and it's evident that you're currently a very long way from that!

Please email me at kemptown@curryleafcafe.com so we can get this issue resolved as best we can.
Kind regards,

Euan (founder)
