New car, rattling gearbox - not a problem according to Bassadone Motors

In 2023, I purchased a brand-new VW T-Roc from Bassadone Motors. I was under the impression that Volkswagen stood for precision engineering, reliability, and a certain Teutonic pride in build quality. What I received instead was a vehicle that rattled like a loose toolbox every time I touched the clutch. What followed was a service experience that mastered the art of saying ‘we understand your concern’ while doing absolutely nothing about it.

The rattle began almost immediately after purchase. It was subtle at first — just a faint knock when operating the clutch, especially in low gears. Naturally, I assumed this would be a minor issue, easily resolved by Bassadone Motors. After all, it was a new car. However, what followed was a series of six appointments over two years, each one more fruitless than the last. Bassadones' final diagnosis? “It’s normal.”

Apparently, the noise is a known feature of the gearbox. Not a fault. Not a defect. A feature. This was confirmed via a Technical Product Information (TPI) bulletin issued by Volkswagen, which I was told about but never shown. I was also informed (incorrectly) that the workshop manager had explained this to me in detail. He hadn’t. But it’s comforting to know that somewhere, someone believes I was thoroughly briefed.

As the noise worsened, I escalated the issue to VW Canarias (as the regional dealership), hoping for a more rigorous assessment. Their response was equally enlightening: the sound is part of the vehicle’s “state of the art” condition. A phrase that, while technically meaningless, does have a certain poetic ring to it. They also confirmed that they couldn’t identify which component was causing the noise but assured me that it was all perfectly normal. I suppose that’s one way to redefine expectations.

Eventually, I took the car to a third-party garage, and within a couple of hours, they had identified a loose heat shield as the source of at least part of the rattle — something Bassadones’ had missed across multiple inspections. That particular noise is now gone. Unfortunately, the clutch rattle remains, and no one — not Bassadones', not VW and not the third party garage can tell me why.

So, to recap:
Six Basadone appointments yielded no resolution.
VW’s official stance is that the noise is intentional.
The TPI bulletin exists but remains a mystery.
A third-party garage found a fault that Bassadones' missed.
The clutch/gearbox still rattles.
The car has fewer than 15,000 km on the clock.

If this is the new standard for “normal” in modern automotive design, then I must congratulate VW on their bold reimagining of quality control. The T-Roc may well be the first car I’ve owned that comes pre-equipped with its own soundtrack of mechanical ambiguity.

Bassadone Motors may not fix your problem, but they’ll definitely tell you it’s not one. Welcome to customer service, Bassadone-style.
