Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 417 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many customers expressed significant dissatisfaction with the decline in customer service, finding it unhelpful, difficult to reach, and often staffed by individuals who seemed to lack understanding or accountability. People frequently reported issues with payment processes, including unexpected account closures, unannounced changes to credit limits, and difficulties with direct debits, leading to frustration and financial inconvenience. The high annual fees were a common point of contention, with many feeling that the cost was not justified by the service or rewards received. Some people also felt that the staff were often rude or unaccommodating, particularly when trying to resolve disputes or request payment adjustments. Conversely, a small portion of people felt that the customer service was excellent and helpful, providing prompt and kind assistance.

THEE worst company to bank with.

THEE worst company to bank with.

Constant, inexplicable adjustments to credit limits. Been a customer for 9 years and never had a late payment. Balance went up a bit after getting married and you’ve slashed my credit limits in half, but again… 9 years, never a late payment, annual salary in the top 3% in America. What a joke. I’ll do business with someone else

not what it's cracked up to be

I am very, VERY, unimpressed with American Express. Sadly, I strived to have one for years, thinking they were wonderful. Their rates are high, their autopay doesn't seem to work well and always lands with an unpaid bill and/or late fee due to miscommunication thinking as it shows, autopay set. Their fees are NEVER directly disclosed and are VERY HIGH, the highest in the country from what i can tell or one of.

Customer Service has dropped

I have had an American Express card for over 20 years because their level of service used to be far and away the best of any credit card. But my last two experiences with customer service (which should have been unnecessary) were abysmal. First, they don't want to talk with their customers, directing me to a phone chat service. And then they would not support me even though I did not receive products and services charged to the card. Is this anomaly, or has their customer service really dropped!?

I’ve been a customer for 10 years never…

I’ve been a customer for 10 years never missed a payment till this year. I was late in October and three days late in August. My interest rate went from 13% to 26% without anyone talking to me, worst customer appreciation ever, when I contacted them, they just said that’s the way it is!!! would not recommend this company ever.

Different Stories From Each Rep

I applied for an AMEX Gold card for business because the fees for the Platinum card went up by $100, and I couldn't justify the expense. They accepted my application and the $395 fee. However, after I completed my welcome offer, they never awarded me my points. They claimed it was because I had a Platinum card, but they never mentioned that in the application or when they accepted my fee. Every customer service representative I spoke to gave me a different explanation. It was a terrible experience! I'll be canceling both cards.

Amex Platinum: A Customer Service Nightmare

If this is what American Express Platinum considers ‘premium’ service, they should be deeply ashamed.

I spent more than four hours on calls trying to resolve a billing dispute, was repeatedly transferred, and forced to explain the same facts to different agents because my refund was never processed. Each time I was told the dispute had been incorrectly categorized by the previous representative, forcing the process to be restarted again and again.

Despite these repeated internal failures, I received no apology and no clear resolution. Representatives insisted that American Express had acted correctly and initially refused to escalate the case properly. After prolonged delays and a lack of meaningful response from AmEx, the merchant (LEVEL) ultimately resolved the issue directly.

This treatment has severely damaged my trust in American Express. This is not the Platinum-level service I expected. I am seriously considering closing my account. I request a written explanation, a formal apology, and concrete corrective measures to ensure no other customer suffers the same experience

This credit card company is terrible!!

This credit card company is terrible!!! Do not apply for it, I have excellent credit, I asked the rep to help lower my interest rate, I get, no options at this time, so I'm transferring my balance to a 0% interest card, pay it off, so now they get no money, I got 0% for 18 months transferring the balance, at least I can make a dent in the balance this way, I highly recommend it!!!!
So apparently, the card company cares less about their customers , so if you can do it transfer your balance somewhere else!!!!

Genuine Scam

Very interesting that Amex allows you to pay bills early (with auto pay enabled) and by default they dont look at any payments made and just extract maximum account balance. This leads to full double payments by the way. The best part of it all -> amex "doesnt have a way for them to get the money back to you" other than waiting for the next cycle (1 month) then sending a cheque in the mail (14 business days). During the whole time they invest in interest earning securities with your money hahahha. Genuinely should be illegal. Biggest payment processor conveniently cant send payments the other way.

Scammy like phone calls…

I have received numerous phone calls from American express where it is silent on the phone like scammers also numerous times where they've accidentally put me on hold before they speak to me. You'd think a company this big could do better.

AMEX JUST SUCKS

AMEX JUST TOLD ME: “Because this dispute was reported more than 60 days after your statement date, we were unable to investigate it.”
In July 2025 I purchased a knee surgery ice therapy product for knee replacement surgeries scheduled for July 2025 and January 2026. The product-Beluga Pro- was manufactured and sold by Summit PDG, Inc.
My Amazon “return window” closed in late August 2025. When I had my second surgery in January, I discovered the product did not pump water / work.
I attempted to return it thru Amazon, who would not help me because the return window was closed.
Amazon asked the company to contact me which they failed to do.
The manufacturer/seller has no working website, phone number or ever provided a warranty.

So much for helping its customers!

Canceled because I won a dispute

Went to use the card and it was canceled. They canceled my account over a heated subscription charge dispute with Ancestry.com that I finally won over 5 months ago!!!! Out of the blue with no advanced warning, email, or text they cancel my card. I could have been on a trip or in an emergency!!!! This is now how TOTALLY evil this company is to its customers. AMEX is now a third world card company with ZERO customer support. They have turned into a very pro business and anti customer protection company over the last 10 years. They really started going down hill when Costco dropped. And Costco dropped them since they charge too much for processing and DON'T LIKE DEALING WITH CUSTOMERS OR RETURNS NOW. Had the platinum card for 23 years and they dropped me like a hot rock with ZERO warning. They also stole/canceled 1300 dollars in award points THAT I EARNED. What a class act they now are. AVIOD AMERICAN EXPRESS NOW AT ALL COST, THEY NOW WILL ALWAYS TAKE THE CROOKED COMPANIES SIDE OVER YOURS!!!! THEY ARE NOW SORE LOSERS AND VINDICTIVE!!!!!

Beware-Amex is not secure

Be very careful with American Express, it is not the safe credit card you thought, Amex actually allowed an individual to change my email and mailing address with a phone call despite the fact that my account had a fraud alert. This is deeply concerning and I will be canceling my Amex account after 25 years as a customer

Amex is definitely not what it used to…

Amex is definitely not what it used to be. I'm pulling out some money out of savings just so I can pay off my cards and be done with them. Apparently I'll have to close my accounts or they'll charge "trailing interest" (that's a class action lawsuit just WAITING to happen!) I thought I had autopay set up, and they absolutely refused to refund a late fee for it. I have never had a late fee waived. So I hope that $40 was worth losing what could have been a lifelong customer. They would have made way more than that off me if I hadn't chosen to go ahead and pay off accounts. 🙄

Amex is just terrible

Amex is just terrible! Constantly wasting my time, constantly lying to me.
I have been a member for so many years and am so displeased with amex and their terrible support.

I have a credit amount they owe and have been trying to get it sent to my bank account or via check for weeks. I was told over the chat it would be sent then once that didn't work, told over the phone that they would send it via check in mail and they still haven't.
Amex straight out lies to me. Over and over. Hours for such a simple need that should not be an issue to begin with.

Imagine how many hours of my time they have wasted. I am so disappointed with them. I will not forgive them for this most obvious time wasting journey they dealt.

I need a simple process to be done which entails sending the credit amount to my account which they said they can do only after an hour later say only via check. Then they confirm after two more tedious hours I spent that I will be receiving a check via mail only to check my account next day to see if this check was processed and finding out it did not get processed like they said. Now I have to talk to the terrible amex support team all over again and hope they actually do what they say this time. Imagine the disrespect to loyal customers.

SHAME ON YOU AMEX.

This is a simple request and you rob me hours of my time and make the interaction so displeasing for a request not even an issue.

Not What It Used to Be

Fragmented, inept, and powerless customer service. Most support seems to be offshored now and have zero motivation to help you. Here's a good example. Trying to add my girlfriend as an authorized user. She lives in Mexico. No problem. I've added other international authorized users before with nothing more than an ID number without even having to upload any documentation. Not so fast. Apparently they now need documentation with the authorized user's name on a US-based address. Absurd and unrealistic. I was told this was a new change. Ok, fine. I should mention I only received this tidbit of information after two weeks of back-and-forth. Complete waste of time that left such a bad taste in my mouth I canceled my account of five years. Even the retention specialist was powerless to do anything, as they had no visibility into the new accounts process. Very obvious it is an entirely different company that has been contracted to process new accounts. If my time is worth so little to them, then their services are correspondingly worth little to me. Canceled. I've noticed a real plummet in overall customer service the past few years, but these past two weeks really showcased it. I'm out.
