I was a customer since 2024 and used to recommend their DNA kits to friends and family. Back then, I could access detailed ancestry information and was genuinely impressed with the service.
Today, much of that information is gone. Data that was previously available in my account has either been hidden or placed behind an additional paid subscription. Apparently, paying for the DNA test itself was not enough.
The worst part is the customer support. I spent over a week asking simple questions: Why was this information removed? Why do some users still have access while others do not? Why am I being asked to pay again for information that was previously available?
Not a single direct answer. Just endless copy-and-paste responses that completely ignored my questions.
This company has lost my trust completely. I will never purchase another product from them and will never recommend them to anyone again.

Accidentally bought a subscription due to a computer error would not let me have a refund had to contact my credit card company. Be careful. These guys are scammers.

Useful DNA service, but some explanations could be clearer
23andMe has been a useful and personally meaningful service for me.
I have taken DNA tests with several laboratories, and the results are broadly consistent. For me, this is not just entertainment or curiosity. Since childhood and even today, I have faced assumptions and discrimination related to nationality and ethnic background. People have tried to define me from the outside without knowing the facts.
DNA testing gives me a clearer factual understanding of my genetic background. It helps me separate real ancestry information from stereotypes, prejudice and random assumptions.
I appreciate that 23andMe presents genetic information in a structured and accessible way. The ancestry results, genetic composition and related features are interesting and useful for understanding family history and broader human connections.
At the same time, some parts of the interpretation could be clearer. Genetic ancestry is complex, and users need explanations that are precise but also understandable. When a report gives percentages, regions or timelines, it should be very clear what is being estimated, what is approximate, and what the limits of the method are.
I would also like services like this to help people feel more connected across countries, languages and histories. DNA results can show how mixed and interconnected human lives really are, and this can be a powerful counterargument to prejudice.
Overall, I find 23andMe useful, informative and worth attention. My main criticism is that some explanations could be more transparent and detailed for users who want to understand the results deeply, not just look at a simplified summary.

I got ann email saying my results were ready and when I went to view the results it’s requiring a credit card to view. Also my husband and I sent them in at the same time and he’s gotten nothing. I put my credit card info in and it said it couldn’t charge the card. Why if I have a free trial do I need to pay again? I want my results I PAID for and I’m not going to get a membership that they charge and charge again. Nope
It never said you have to pay for your results when I paid almost $100 for each test. I called the customer service number and it’s impossible to get any live person, sent an email and got generic response. Whats wrong with you 23andMe? I did this for my viewers to see whose legit and whose not…so sad! I had high hopes and was let down! I guess I’ll never see the results…..

Unhappy.
I received an email offer of a reduced price 1 year subscription to their premium service. Upon pressing on the link I was taken to checkout which was showing their full price. Upon contacting the company I received no apology or explanation, only an offer to subscribe at full price and then request a refund of the difference. I’ve lost trust in this company and certainly will not be sending them any money.
I would give them a zero if I could
I would give them a zero if I could. Appalling g company and zero customer service. They send responses that are cut n paste and don’t even answer the query!
Months later and still not solved
I see they keep auto-responding on here with a ‘we are here to help’ message and providing a US number , even to people who say they are in the UK.
Sums them up really.
So waiting for my auto response with the same thing.
UPDATE
And hilariously just as I predicted they replied with the cut n paste auto response with a US number when I’m in the UK. Really shows what the service levels are like at this company. AVOID!
2nd UPDATE
and as soon as I do an update it does another auto response with the same cut n paste message. When you email them you get a load of cut n paste responses back too. Appalling company

23andMe demands my credit card to release my results
I signed up for a KIT and a one year premium membership. I sent the sample kit in, as instructed. A week later, I receive an email that states I have to input my credit card, sign up for auto renew for the premium membership, in order to see my results. I already have a one year premium membership from May 2026 to 2027. So I find this manipulative marketing and sales tactics. I should not have to put in my credit card for genetic results, when I am already paid up to May 2027. I imagine this company makes lots of money from the auto renewal Premium membership program, since they will cancel it when you ask, but their policy states they do not prorate. So if you forget to cancel it, you will be charged $69 per year, every year.

More than 3 months since I submitted my sample and no updates and a response from customer service either. I send my sample on January 19th. It only reached them on February 5th. Since March 20th sample has been stuck on reviewing despite them claiming you could only take 10 days. We are now in May the 6th so 3 months and still nothing. I hope I can still get it money back from my credit card company.
Note- if you see 23andme respond below with a USA number on Pacific time. This is clearly an automated message and they didn't even bother reading the feedback. Another indication of how bad the customer service is.

Good product
The company is continuously adding positive addendum to the original product that make this a good investment

Great job on my results. Getting the haplogroups as well was very important. The price is worth it on sale

I emailed the company to delete my data and my account.
They did not.
Then, months went by, they updated their terms, moved me to auto-billing, charged me $99 for an entire year's subscription then refused to give me a refund.
Avoid this company like the plague.

Do not get your kit with 23andme
Do not get your kit with 23andme, if you would like to receive your results in a timely manner. I have sent my sample of 11 weeks ago, contacted the company 3 times and every time, they tell me it will be a week to 10 days more. We are at the 9 week mark now and I still do not have a result or answer as to when it will be ready. I am wondering if the results will be correct. Judging by the way my sample was handled, my confidence is definitely diminished. I ordered an additional kit on ancestry.com, for comparison!
Unacceptable delays during a sensitive life event
I am beyond disappointed with the lack of progress on my DNA kit. My sample has been sitting in a queue for over a month with absolutely no movement or communication.
I turned to 23andMe during an incredibly difficult time—I recently discovered that the man who raised me is not my biological father. I am looking for answers and closure, yet the "waiting in queue" status has stalled my ability to heal or find the truth. This delay is more than just a minor inconvenience; it is an added layer of stress during an already traumatic life event.
Had I known that the company’s internal instability would lead to such poor service and total stagnation, I would have taken my business to a competitor. It is clear that the current management is struggling to provide even the most basic level of service. If you are looking for timely results or reliable customer support, look elsewhere.

I find that 23&Me provides information about me, my DNA and origins. I am very happy with 23&Me and would recommend 23&Me to anyone that wants information regarding their ethnic background.
