My long and arduous battle with Tyne Tech is finally over

My long and arduous battle with Tyne Tech is finally over and I will post an account of it here. Summary- do not give them your device!! Their system is extremely poorly organised, they have very poor communication between Newcastle and Gosforth branches and no one seemed to know when/at what stage of repair my laptop was at any stage of this process. And after over 1 month, my laptop was not fixed.

I brought my laptop into Tyne Tech repairs in mid-March, hoping to get it repaired in time for my 21st birthday. They took my laptop away, saying it was a simple battery fix. I did not hear from them for two weeks. When I called, they said they’d ‘check its progress and call me back’. They did not call me back. I called again in a few days. They said they were still working on it and they’d call me back that evening. They didn’t call me back. This turned out to be a theme, because every single time I called them over the span of 6 weeks, not ONCE have they called me back when they said they would.

I’m in university so I assumed they’d have my laptop fixed before I went back in April, since it had been 4 weeks since I brought it in, and surely it would be fixed by then? When I started calling asking for updates every few days, they said the same thing- they were waiting for a part and they’d call me back. At this point, I was extremely frustrated and needed my laptop back for university, so I went into the shop to get it back.

They did not have my laptop.

“What?” I said. “Where is it then?”

Apparently my laptop was in a safe that only the manager had a key to. I said I needed it back for university, and they would have it arranged to be taken out of the safe. I come back FIVE DAYS LATER. The person behind the counter had no idea what I’m talking about. He said my laptop is now in a safe in the Newcastle branch, that only the manager has the key to, and the manager is out of the country on a personal emergency???

At this point I’m convinced my laptop has been pawned on the black market. What do you mean the Manager of Tyne Tech, the ONLY person with a key to every single laptop and phone in the city, is out of the country?

After me and my mum go to considerable effort to bother them, calling multiple times a day and going into the Gosforth branch multiple times over the weekend, we finally get my laptop delivered to the Gosforth branch on Saturday afternoon, the day before I’m due to leave town for university. So the manager wasn’t away then.

So with my laptop on the counter, the man looks me in the eye and tells me that it is fixed. I said are you sure?? He said yes, absolutely, it is ABSOLUTELY fixed and it has a new battery in. I had no idea when it ‘got fixed’ since I never got a call from Tyne tech in the 5 weeks they had my laptop locked up in the Newcastle branch. He charges me £85. I’m like, ok, at least it will be fixed.

I go home, plug my laptop in, and guess what. IT IS NOT FIXED. The battery still doesn’t work. So my mum gets on the phone with them the next day, tells them it’s not fixed, and someone sheepishly admits that yeah, they tried putting a new battery in, but that wasn’t the problem, so they took it back out again. So nothing about my laptop has changed, I’m £85 down and me and my mum have spent considerable time over the course of many weeks trying to find out what’s going on with it, just to recieve zero answers.

They say they will refund the transaction. My mum says ok. We wait a week. It’s not been refunded. We call them again on Friday. They say that the payment has gone through on their end, it’ll come through by Sunday. Sunday comes and goes, no refund. My mum phones them again. They ask for a receipt of my bank transfer etc, eventually realises that the refund only got sent on Friday. So they did not actually refund it until we called them again to bug them about it. We can’t trust a single word that comes out of their mouths- they’ve lied and evaded at every opportunity.

The refund finally comes through today. My laptop is not fixed, I have lost over a month of use of my half-broken laptop and I’ve wasted a month of pestering them for nothing. Me and my family will never darken the doors of Tyne Tech ‘repairs again and I suggest you don’t either.

Fixed charging port, but they broke the antenna

The charging port on my A51 stopped working, my partner took the phone in and they told him they would ring him that afternoon. He didnt get a call and had to call them the next day. They fixed the charging port but broke the flex on the antenna so I couldnt make calls, send texts or switch to mobile data. They 'repaired' the phone again, assured me it was working, however, I am still unable to make calls etc.
Would not recommend and will not be using them again.

Took my laptop for a screen fix — got it back completely ruined.

1 Star (If I could give negative stars, I would.)
This is the longest review I’ve ever written — and that alone should tell you how disastrous my experience with Tyne Tech Repairs in Newcastle was.
If you’re thinking of taking your laptop or phone here, do yourself a favour: run the other way.
I had a perfectly working HP Envy x360 — Ryzen 5, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Touchscreen — the only issue was a cracked display. In July 2025, I took it to Tyne Tech in Clayton Street, Newcastle city centre, thinking they’d be reliable after reading a few decent reviews. What a mistake. This shop is the perfect example of how a so-called “repair” place can ruin your device and vanish when it’s time to take responsibility.
From the start, the entire setup seemed off. There were two or three clueless staff wandering around while one guy — I’m assuming the manager or owner — just sat there barking half-hearted instructions. He barely looked at me, had zero interest in talking, and seemed like he was allergic to customer service. Still, I went ahead when they quoted £160 for a replacement screen and assured me it would be an original touchscreen panel. He promised it would be done in a week.
That “one week” turned into almost three weeks. Every single update came only after I called them. Every time it was some new excuse — “waiting for customs to clear,” “coming from Europe,” “almost here” — you name it—no calls, no messages, nothing proactive. Finally, the day came — I got the laptop back and thought, thank god it’s over. Oh, how wrong I was.
At first, it looked okay. But when I opened it —
● The webcam didn’t work (“camera not detected”)
● The camera area was seen as white from the inside
● The screen hinge was loose and wobbly
● The metal frame on the top of the laptop had a dent
● Rubber padding underneath was missing
● Screws were gone
● And after just a couple of days, faint grey horizontal lines started appearing all across the screen.
This was a laptop that was absolutely spotless apart from the cracked screen. They literally handed me back something that looked like it had survived a small explosion.
When I pointed this out, instead of admitting he’d messed up, the guy started checking for software updates. Like seriously — a physically broken camera and screen issue, and his genius move was to run Windows Update. That’s when I realised he wasn’t just careless; he genuinely didn’t have a clue what he was doing. He said he’d fix it once a “new cable for the camera” arrived. He also said the screen lines would be fixed with that, which, of course, never happened.
I told him I’d pay only after it was sorted. Still, after arguing for a while, I paid the £160 only because he wrote on his card that he’d fix the camera. Months passed. Guess what?
No call.
No follow-up.
Nothing.
Every update came only when I chased them again. Eventually, I accepted that this guy had zero intention of fixing it and had destroyed my laptop. Even recycling services refused to take it because of how damaged it was. That’s how bad it got.
We went there around 10 times trying to get it sorted — total waste of time and energy. The cherry on top? One day, a family walked in to get a phone repaired. They decided to come back later since they needed it that day. The moment they walked out, the owner told his staff to follow them secretly to see if they were going to another shop.
That’s the level of professionalism we’re dealing with here.
Creepy, paranoid, and utterly unethical.
At this point, the laptop’s unusable, the store’s ghosted us, and I’m just writing this so no one else has to go through what we did.
If you see this review and still decide to go there, don’t say you weren’t warned.
I’ve never written a review this long in my life, but when a business manages to take £160 out of your pocket, destroy a perfectly good laptop, and act like they’re doing you a favour, they deserve every word of it.
Tyne Tech Repairs — you should be ashamed of what you call a “repair service.”

Avoid Tyne Tech - Clayton Street (Screen Replacement Issues)

I recently had my MacBook screen replaced at the Tyne Tech shop on Clayton Street. They told me the new screen came with a two-month warranty, but they didn't provide any written invoice or documentation, which should have been my first red flag.

Sure enough, after about a month, the "newly fixed" screen failed. I took it back to claim the warranty, and thankfully, I had my credit card statement to prove the payment was made well within the warranty period. After "inspecting" my faulty screen, they claimed my battery was faulty and causing a short circuit that damaged the screen. This was an utter lie; my battery was perfectly fine. Yet, they flat-out refused to replace the faulty screen under warranty.

With no other options, I ended up paying again to replace both the battery and get yet another "new" screen. Now, just one month later, this second screen has stopped working too. I'm not even bothering to go back and try to claim the warranty again. It's clear these people do not honor the warranties they give. I seriously doubt any customer has successfully claimed a warranty from them.

Friendly and professional

Friendly and professional - talked directly to my young daughter whose tablet had the issue and not to me, explaining what the issue was in terms she understood. Problem diagnosed and repaired there and then while we waited.
