Go to Sri Lanka!!!!

I volunteered with Travelteer for 6 months for my Uni placement and I am so glad that I did. Coming during September and staying during the quiet season gave me loads of opportunities to carry out my research and also try different parts of all of the programmes, not just my own. I always felt supported when it came to my research and Ruchi the manager was really helpful with giving me advice on things that I could do and ways to collect my data. All of the Sri Lankan staff are extremely welcoming and I always felt comfortable around them. The food is great with Western options for dinner every other day (sausage and mash, spag bol etc) and we get to have Sri Lankan food for lunches which was my favourite part about the food- although the menu is the same every week which can get quite repetitive if you’re here for a while. But there are so many nice restaurants and good brunch spots in town which are great for a break from the food in the villa. I absolutely loved my time in Sri Lanka and will remember it for a life time :)

An experience of a life time

Volunteering with Travelteer has been an amazing experience, being submerged in the culture of Sri Lanka while learning to care for the sea turtles as part of the Marine and Wildlife Conservation programme; the 4 months I’ve spent here have flown by!
The staff are all incredibly friendly and are fun to work with. The atmosphere is relaxed while still getting the job done, and seeing the changes we make is very rewarding.
Overall, this is a great opportunity to gain work experience and to meet like-minded people… I 100% recommend!

I had the most amazing experience in Sri Lanka

I had the most amazing experience in Sri Lanka with travelteer, I spent 5 weeks there and couldn’t fault it! The placement was invaluable, I was doing the medical elective and spent every morning at karapitya teaching hospital. This was an amazing experience, highlighting the difference in healthcare to the UK. I also spent time at an Ayurvedic clinic, orphanage, temple, turtle sanctuary and English village classes. Every single experience was amazing and I enjoyed every second of it. In addition all staff were absolutely amazing, couldn’t fault a single one. Big shout out to the coordinator Eddie who went above and beyond to create socials for the group and made everyone included. Couldn’t have asked for a better coordinator. Also shout out to Ruchi for running it well and anushka for driving me to karapitya every day.

Coast to Coast Tour Review Jan 2026

Had an amazing week on the Coast to Coast Tour doing activities such as:
- Climbing Sigriya rock
- Jeep safari seeing lots of elephants and water buffalos
- Wood carving factory visit
- Tea factory visit
- Spice garden tour
- Train ride to Ella
- Climbing Pidurangala rock
- Climbing Ella rock (a personal favourite)
- Snorkelling
- Temple visit
- Silk shop visit to try on saris
- Visit the Nine Arch Bridge
- Royal botanical garden visit
- Surf lesson
The tour was very structured but you had free time in the evening to go for drinks or look around. I thought there was a perfect balance of activities and free time.
The staff, Ruchi, Nalin and Eddie, were all super friendly, welcoming and answered any concerns we had. They made sure everyone was comfortable with and prepared for the activities.
Three meals a day were included but you are expected to cover the cost of drinks including water. We ate meals such as kottu, curry, pasta, pizza and fried rice so a real variety each day. Your meals are predetermined and you do not choose what you eat but they cater to dietary requirements and we were also given the option to pay for ourselves and go elsewhere for food if we fancied something different that day. Quite a few meals were also buffet so you can pick and choose what you would like.
The accommodation were shared rooms in hotels (2/3 people per room), many of which were very nice rooms and had pools which was a nice touch.
I would highly recommend this tour. It allowed me to see areas outside of Hikkaduwa that I wouldn’t have otherwise been able to fit in alongside my volunteering. Things at the main villa can be very chilled and relaxed while volunteering which is lovely but this made a nice change as it was a lot more active and social.

I was here for 6 weeks

I was here for 6 weeks, and did both English and sports development, I enjoyed teaching the children and getting involved in the sports. As I was here in quiet season I was able to do a bit of marine as well, helping out with the turtles which was also a great experience. The staff are amazing, the accommodation is clean and accommodating, although we were told to begin with that it would be right next to the beach, but is in fact a 10 minute tuk tuk away, the Sri Lankan food made by the chef was delicious so overall would highly recommend, was an incredible experience

i had an incredible experience with travel teer. The staff were so kind and friendly, the villa was always clean and tidy, nice big bedrooms/bathrooms and lovely sri lankan style food served monday to friday. The volunteering was well thought out and organised with enough time in our lunches to explore hikkaduwa. Would 100% recommend to anyone!

Sports development volunteer for a month

I had a really good 4 weeks in Sri Lanka with Travelteer. I would say on the sports development program there was a good balance between sports and ground renovation which helped the community and disadvantaged children in Hikkaduwa.
My coordinator Sula was very helpful and friendly and made the experience fulfilling.
Would definitely recommend to anyone interested.

Travelteer review - Sri Lanka

Just finished an amazing 4-week volunteering trip to Sri Lanka with Travelteer, working on both the Medical and Marine Conservation programmes. I gained hands-on experience in healthcare, helped protect marine life, and explored the country. Huge thanks to the Travelteer team and coordinators for making it all so meaningful and unforgettable — I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a rewarding and inspiring adventure!

Nepal Travelteer - can not recommend enough

The Travelteer Nepal project has truly been a life-changing experience. The Peaks to Peaks tour, led by Wangda, offered a rich journey through the country’s culture—ranging from architectural tours and museums to safari excursions and treks in the mountainous regions. The itinerary struck a great balance between structured activities and free time.
The volunteering element was equally eye-opening, guided by Sakina and Snigda. It gave us the chance to build meaningful connections with locals and gain insight into their way of life. From an educational perspective, we explored the differences and challenges between state and private schooling, while also identifying infrastructural needs such as building new classrooms and bamboo greenhouses.
A special thanks goes to Paula from Travelteer, who did an outstanding job in organising the trip. She not only ensured everything ran smoothly but also joined in the activities, creating a fun and welcoming atmosphere while managing any challenges with professionalism.

Be sceptically, optimistic

I’ve just spent 4weeks in Sri Lanka and my what an incredible experience it has been. By my university providing me with the opportunity to go to a new country in Asia for the first time, funding and through an experienced company.

Firstly, about Sri Lanka, such a beautiful, lush green country. Waking up to palm trees and peacocks! The friendliest of people (mostly) and the coordinators (Sula, Umesha, Dilanka) I thank you for being so welcoming and kind when doing the volunteering aspect.

When it comes to the Travelteer accommodation, organisation and logistics. I have to say it wasnt the finest from arriving at around 10PM at night in Sri Lanka, I was expecting to just go straight to the accommodation but no… I got delivered to a restaurant with all my luggage and exhausted. Plus no food is provided at the accommodation on Sunday. So if you’re arriving later like I did bring some noodles or something. My first impression of this organisation was not the best.

Plus, my programme in general wasn’t was i thought it was due to the Travelteer website and how it actually is in Sri Lanka expressing a bit of misinformation. For instance how there would be a launderette on site (not true) and breakfast is provided on weekends (true, but you make it yourself) but a bit of misunderstanding on the website.

I did the sports programme and it was fun as in the afternoon you get to have a good sweat sesh with the children when playing sports! In the mornings you’re painting. Though it does get tedious after doing the same thing for a week and sometimes I feel I’m not making much of impact as I thought I would be doing SPORTS DEVELOPMENT. I honestly thought I’ll be coaching, teaching new sports or doing a good ole sports day with the fundraising money we all gave to the charity to help fund new equipment for these kind of activities.
I’ll be honest I’m not so sure where my fundraising money goes as I haven’t seen where it has gone to within sports but hopefully it does eventually.

Would I recommend - Yes for the experience in a new country and basically fully funded from the Turing Scheme if a Uni Student. Plus it’ll look go on the CV.
Be aware you may need more money for spending and weekend activities.

Thank you!

Incredible Experience with Travelteer!

I joined Travelteer for a charity challenge and had the opportunity to explore the beautiful country of Sri Lanka. From start to finish, the team—both in the UK and on the ground in Sri Lanka—were absolutely outstanding. They took care of every detail, from ensuring we felt safe and supported, to organising fun activities and providing amazing local food. It was a truly rewarding and amazing experience that I’ll never forget!
Big shout out to Laurence, Lawrence and Ruchi who made the trip seamless from start to finish.
