I've been a loyal Starling customer for years, with both personal and business accounts, so I expected a little more than an automated rejection when expanding our business.
We recently set up a new property development company as part of our existing group. The application was declined because of the "nature of the business", despite it being a straightforward UK property trading company. When I asked for the decision to be reviewed, I received nothing more than a generic response saying the decision couldn't be changed, with no explanation and no meaningful consideration of our existing relationship with the bank.
What disappointed me most wasn't the rejection itself, it was the complete lack of customer service. Years of loyalty, multiple accounts and a proven track record counted for absolutely nothing. The response made it clear that Starling's decisions are driven by rigid policies rather than any willingness to understand or support established customers.
Ironically, another provider approved exactly the same business almost immediately, which makes Starling's position even harder to understand.
As a result, we'll now be moving our business banking and personal accounts elsewhere. If you're looking for a bank that grows with your business and values long-term customer relationships, this wasn't my experience with Starling.

Arbitrarily refusing to open a bank account, after providing correct documents. Utterly useless

I don’t like that the referral system in the app is broken. Besides this, the experience has been decent.

Having been with a High Street Bank for 45 yrs I decided to move away after receiving atrocious customer service. They’d linked my credit file to a strangers!
Moving to Starling has been painless and I love the ‘spare’ account facility. They have been faultless

Applied for a business account and it was declined. Called to ask why and was told I had passed but my application had still been refused and they weren’t able to explain why. I reapplied and explained my business in a slightly different way and was now accepted. Please return the human element to your decision making and remove the automated AI computer says no. You will loose good customers for no good reason.

Spaces and interest on savings is good, better than Revolut accounts

Wasted my time opening an account only to tell me I can’t use tap and pay. I asked why? No reason. I just can’t. What’s the process to use it? No process I just can’t. Dumb as hell.

I've wasted my time by trying to provide all documents needed to prove this and that... at the end answer was No. As a sole trader just stepping into my PT career so few things I couldn't provide...Or simply the numbers I gave them seems to be no worth giving her an account!
Don't bother answering with blah blah under my review : )
