Beware of Unscrupulous Cancellation Fees

To future RVezy customers: beware of unscrupulous business practices. I booked an RV for the summer of 2024 for a family trip that we were planning across Western Canada. After much research, I booked an RV in October 2023 for travel dates in August 2024. The owner of the RV that I reserved offered flexible cancellation, which was one of the reasons I paid a premium for the RV that I booked. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, we had to amend our travel plans and trip dates, and the RV that we requested was (understandably) not available for our revised dates. We proceeded to cancel our reservation in April, well in advance of the 30 day cancellation window. Unfortunately, RVezy withheld “service fees” from our paid deposit, which amounted to a total $708.55. Now I will admit full responsibility for this oversight, and for failing to read the fine print of the cancellation policy. However, I assumed (incorrectly) that the cancellation policy would be similar to industry standards. When I have cancelled a booking through AirBnB, I receive a full refund. Even the airline industry, which is notorious for their inflexibility, charges cancellation fees of up to $150 maximum. Paying a “cancellation fee” of $708.55 from RVezy seems excessive at best and unethical at worst. What service did they provide to justify this cost? I caution future RVezy customers to review the cancellation policy and consider this before booking with this service.

Hey Jordan,

Thank you for sharing your experience. We genuinely appreciate your feedback, as it helps us improve our services and clarify our policies.

We understand how important flexibility is when planning trips, and we're sorry to hear that unforeseen circumstances impacted your travel plans. While the RV owner you booked with offered flexible cancellation, it’s important to note that hosts cannot set their own cancellation policies; they must adhere to the options provided by RVezy.

Regarding the service fees, providing and managing a platform involves significant costs, which is why we charge service fees as a percentage of bookings.

We encourage all users to review our cancellation policies before making a reservation, as we know these fees can vary across different platforms. Your insights are valuable to us, and we’re continuously working to improve the user experience. If you have any further concerns, please feel free to reach out to our customer support team.

Thank you again for your feedback, and we hope to serve you better in the future.

Best regards,

Withholding my money

Currently discussing with Abdul via email. I paid a security deposit of $1500 and had a deductible of $750 for insurance. Damage happened which I spoke to the owner straight away so I accept I pay the $750 deductible. I have however been charged $ 1000 deductible and told I will get the remainder after the claim resolution. This isn’t right! I have email from Abdul saying I will receive $750 nothing about receiving $500 and the rest after the claim resolution. I can’t even see this on your website. Shocking customer service

Hi Matt. First, you absolutely did the right thing by speaking with the host right away about the damage.
I can see that our agents are actively working on this case and looking into the refund you mentioned. I understand that the claims process can be lengthy and frustrating, and your patience is appreciated. Our claims team and insurance partners approach each claim with diligence and precision.
Please keep an eye out for an email from our agent, as your message has been received, your case is being taken seriously, and your issue has not been forgotten.

They are not the worst

They are not the worst, but there are many issues with the platform. First of all, as one would expect, the earnings are greatly exaggerated. RVs tend to rent for two-night trips at best. RVezy takes about 30% of the host's fee, plus HST that is deducted separately. They say that their fee is 20%, but their fee comes to 30% of the rental price ($84 plus $11 HST on a $250 rental fee).
To the renter, they charge $86 in insurance on top of $250 rental, plus $69 RVezy Service Fee and $20 in taxes.
So, on a $250 rental, they earn $84 from the owner and $69 from the renter. They probably also make a commission from the insurance.
Possibly the most disconcerting is the insurance aspect. There were a couple of instance where a minor damage happened, one that was difficult to pinpoint to a specific renter. It may have just been due to the use of the RV (a hole in the propane tank hose, a scratch on the roof that caused a minor leak, things you may not see right away). Of course, these are just wear and tear, but one which would be minimal if the RV was only used by the owner. The income from renting just about covered the repairs, so all-in-all you end up working for free to allow others to use your RV.
We did have one major damage, a flat tire, which meant replacing both tires and one rim. RVezy said they don't cover tires. They don't seem to cover anything else either and you would have to ask the renter to cover it from their deposit. I find the insurance utterly useless unless the RV is seriously damaged, but I hope I will never find out if they would cover anything in that case.
It would be cheaper to get a commercial license for the RV for the summer months and rent it out yourself, charging each renter a portion of your monthly premium for the insurance would be far cheaper than the $80 RVezy charges anyway.

Hi Gabriela,

Thanks so much for your detailed and honest review.

To say that RVs tend to be rented for 2 nights at best is not entirely accurate, though I am not discounting that this may be your personal experience. There are many, many guests on our platform who are looking to rent for a week, and sometimes even multiple months.

A suggestion for a host who is only receiving requests for short stays is to set their minimum rental to 3 nights or more. This is done through the Calendar settings under Preferences tab on a listing.

As is outlined in our help centre, the flat service fee for hosts is 20%. Here are the links to our articles on host service fees:
- https://help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038105514-What-is-included-in-the-host-s-service-fee

Host service fees can go as high as 39% if you include Featured RV and Payout Guarantee, which can be read about in the first article above.

As for taxes, these are, of course, unavoidable for all businesses and individuals alike. Taxes vary depending on the state/province you are in. An article on host taxes is linked below.

With regards to insurance for guests, there is no one flat fee. First, guests get to choose their deductible level. Then, based on this and other factors, such as the type of RV, the nightly rate for insurance is calculated.

Guests pay a service fee for platform use, which is also outlined in our help centre.

I understand your concerns with insurance coverage, and again, will point you to our help centre article that outlines this topic in detail, and then further clarify what happens if a claim cannot be opened.

If damage does not substantiate opening a claim, there is a Request Money function available for all hosts on each booking. This function allows hosts to request money from guests for more minor damages, such as those you mentioned.

Again, I want to thank you for the honest and detailed nature of your review. We take feedback from all clients on our platform seriously, and your message is received.
Please know that if you ever have any further questions or concerns, our Customer Success Team is available to hear you out. You can call the office at 1-855-697-8399, or send an email to hello@rvezy.com.

Horrible customer service

Horrible customer service. An awning broke, snapped while we were sitting under it- we did nothing but use it for its intended purpose of shade and it clearly was defective or in poor quality. The company would not hear our side of the story and went ahead and charge us $1500 to replace the owners awning. The customer service representatives I dealt with were absolutely no use.

I understand if we broke something due to misuse or irresponsibility, but we did everything we were supposed to do and we were still charged an exorbitant amount of money.

We did not have a sunshade the entire vacation and we had to pay more than our actual rental . There was no negotiation and customer service blamed us. I highly recommend NOT using this company

Hi Ashley.

First, I’m sorry to see that you had a negative experience with a member of our customer service team. Our customer service team is a relatively small and tight-knit team, and all members do their best to provide excellent service to all users on the RVezy platform.

We have a diligent claims team that handles every insurance claim that is opened on a booking. I understand that you believe the awning on this RV was of poor quality and bound to break, and thus don't feel that you should be held responsible for damages. As a guest, when you sign the rental agreement for a booking, you agree to take the RV in the condition that it’s in. It is also the guest’s responsibility to ensure awnings are closed properly after use, in case of strong wind or a storm. Awnings that are not properly secured after use are at a risk of breaking due to these types of weather events.

If ever a guest has concerns about the condition or quality of an RV during a rental, they are strongly encouraged to contact the host as well as the team at RVezy to inform both of these concerns.

I understand that insurance claims are a stressful experience and can leave an unpleasant feeling at the end of a rental. Our job at RVezy is to ensure, first and foremost, that all guests and hosts on our platform feel safe and secure. Furthermore, we strive to ensure that difficult matters such as insurance claims are handled with scrutiny, diligence, and respect.

We are here if you have any questions or feedback that you would like to further discuss. Our Customer Success team can be reached at 1-855-697-8399, or via email at hello@rvezy.com.

What a terrible company

What a terrible company. Took a few hundred dollars from me for holding a reservation for 48 hours months before the trip. Refused any sort of refund aside from a credit that I could use at their crappy company. No thanks. Use Outdoorsy or RVshare, you'll be happy you did.

Website and customer service were both terrible. Rented an RV, got a confirmation number. RVezy had no problem quickly charging my credit card $650, but can't help when they cancelled my reservation for no reason. They also said the host cancelled a second reservation, but she did not. Customer service was terrible. They advised me to just reserve another rv to the tune of another $650 without trying in any way to help me. Then the rv was showing as booked for the dates needed. I won't use them again. RVnotEZ.

Hi Laura.

I looked into the situation and can see that your booking was cancelled because the host was unresponsive when you tried to contact them to book their RV, and they were also unresponsive to our multiple contact attempts.

I understand that booking cancellations are not a positive experience, and want to assure you that we only cancel bookings in very specific situations. This was one of those situations as the host was unresponsive on the platform.

I want to clarify that the host did not book those dates on their calendar; they were automatically blocked off due to the cancellation.

When a guest is cancelled on, our Customer Success team goes through the process of helping the guest find a new RV for their trip. I can see that a few of our agents had been in contact with you to help with this. I can also see that the refund of $661.17 was successfully processed on your card on May 29th, after you opted not to take the credits offered to make a new booking.

I'm sorry that you were not able to find another RV for your trip. If you have any further feedback to provide about your experience, please reach out to our team at 1-855-697-8399 or via email at hello@rvezy.com.

Mixed but overall positive

Rented an RV which 1 day before trip was unavailable. Thru RV ezy, found another willing RV owner who was lovely and got the RV ready quickly. He took really good care of us, and we travelled across BC with my aging parents in reasonable comfort.
Only peeve - the insurance that is required - you MUST read the fine print, as it's hard to access, hard to use and covers only limited thing (no collisions, only roadside assistance). It's very expensive and I found it unhelpful.
