Remains To Be Seen makes handcrafted memorial ornaments using a small amount of a loved one's ashes, blended into plaster and shaped into pieces you'd actually want on display. Based in Christchurch, New Zealand, the business is run by Jax, who started making these after losing her mum, brother and stepmother in quick succession and finding herself surrounded by urns and boxes that didn't feel like the people inside them. It took about 18 months of trial and error to land on a plaster mix that sets without kiln-firing and holds up for generations. You only need a tablespoon or so of ashes, sent back in a prepaid, tracked kit. Everything left over comes home to you, down to the last grain. Each piece is made one at a time, by hand, with a name plaque or a no-cost ID label if you want it. No two come out the same, since the colour and texture in the finished piece are quite literally fragments of the person it's made from. It's a small, one-woman operation rather than a big manufacturer, so pieces are made in batches over a few weeks rather than dispatched overnight.
