I took out a policy for working gundog cover, which they advertise that they do, in December 2025.
I tried to log on to my account to check some details at the beginning of Feb 2026 to find that I was unable to. I emailed their team only to be told that they "no longer deal with this policy, as it was transferred to Jigsaw/NCI insurance at the end of 2024."
Another email sent to point out when the policy was taken out, only to be fobbed off and an email given for pettrac insurance. I then contacted them trying to find out who my policy was with, their response "When the administration of the PETtrac policies changed from Thistle to us, the customer portal was discontinued and no longer works.
I can confirm that we can still look to cover your working dog however please be aware that the third party cover would not be active whilst they are working."
So who exactly has been taking my money? And who am I actually insured with?
I have since cancelled my direct debit. Also noted that the DD was for NCI road cover and not pet cover as per the reference??
I also informed petguard that they are still advertising gundog/pet insurance on their website, which now they are going to look in to internally. A bit too late, don't you think?
Highly disappointed, unprofessional and I feel very deceived. It's hard enough trying to find an insurance company that cover working dogs that is a reasonable price, but to then find out that only by chance that they no longer have the policy and was never informed of this, I find absolutely disgusting.
I do not recommend. Stay away from this company.
Update YOUR QUOTE SETTINGS WITH THE CORRECT INFO
They don’t insure Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldogs… but they don’t have them in their Breed list that they don’t insure… but they have the Breed in the box when starting a quote that you can select… make it make sense. The operator told me the breed isn’t on their list… so I took screenshots of the name appearing in the selection breed box and also of their breeds they don’t insure! And sent it to them. And all I got was have a nice day back.
🔎 👁️ 👈🏾that’s me searching the list of breeds they won’t insure to try and see where the ABBB appears 😂😂😂
About as useful as a chocolate teapot… I’m so glad I came here to put in a review after… and now it all makes sense…
What a shambles
Insured my dog fir many years then when he had a dental issue they refused to pay out. What's the point of insurance? These are crooks avoid them . They have poor claims history and if I had known I would have never given them my money.

Avoid this insurance provider at all…
Avoid this insurance provider at all costs!
I insured my dog at 8 weeks old under a lifetime 6k cover policy which started out at £34pm he’s now 5 and my monthly premium is £86 I’ve just had my renewal quote which is £207pm literally pricing me out, seriously how can it go from £86 per month to £207pm! Scandalous!
Yes I have claimed in that time for an ongoing issue my dog has however the amount is nowhere near the monthly premium and that the whole point in having a lifetime policy! As it’s now a pre-existing condition I won’t be covered with another provider so I’m trapped!! Or I cancel and my dog has 0 insurance.
To settle a claim it takes 8+ weeks and I have to chase it up constantly, not forgetting missing claims etc waiting for a claim to settle is painful and the vets won’t allow this company to pay directly, so you have to pay upfront and wait weeks for the claim to be settled. You also have to pay £150 excess for each claim you make which is higher than most providers. This changed from £99 about 2 years ago again nothing you can do when you’re trapped in a lifetime policy with a pet that has existing conditions.
So disappointed with the renewal price! This company will literally price you out once they have you. I knew pet insurance was abit of a scam to begin with and yes I was expecting an increase to my premium for this year but an extra £121 per month is absolutely scandalous. You should be ashamed petguard!!! AVOID AVOID AVOID you’ve been warned!!!!
Update.. I already tried speaking to you about it and I was told this is the best deal that can be offered. In fact the man I spoke to wasn’t very pleasant.
My sister who has a dog the same age and same breed has since had her renewal she has had less claims but more expensive claims overall but hers didn’t increase as much as mine.

Poor claims handling
I have a pet with a lifelong illness so I'm stuck with this insurer as I need the level of lifetime cover. I can't get it anywhere else, believe me I've tried! Petguard are so awful at handling claims, really slow process, it's always taken more than 8 weeks and I've always had to chase them multiple times before being paid out, so don't believe what they say about claims handled swiftly. I wish I could move to another insurer!

Silly increase in price
After 4 years our insurance went from £35 a month to £67. With 1 claim in year 1 and living in the same area. They handled the claim reasonably well, but we had to change providers as I could imagine it would just keep going up! I believe they have just been bought by someone else, so might be the reason for the silly jump in price. Found an almost identical cover with another company for about £40. Shop around!

Called to update errors in my renewal…
Called to update errors in my renewal and as a result the premium came down. Once I'd received the update a detail was still wrong so they wanted to increase my premium by 28 pounds. I wasn't allowed an immediate complaint just was told my grievance was "on the system" and someone would investigate and get back to me. What a load of cobblers and a waste of my time.
Charged for a policy they confirmed was cancelled
After two small claims, our renewal price was just ridiculous and TRIPLE the price we paid for last year. Emailed multiple times to cancel the renewal and had multiple confirmations that the policy would not renew on the date, I cancelled our direct debit. Woken up this morning to of been charged for the insanely expensive insurance policy we have not even taken out with them. This policy doesn’t even show on our dashboard. Customer service is very slow.
Arranged pet insurance through Thistle…
Arranged pet insurance through Thistle Insurance. Sudden and unexpected death of pet led to claim for farewell expenses. Still awaiting decision after 2 months. Distressing experience enough without having to send so much paperwork with the claim and then for it to be assessed over such a long period of time. Little sympathy and understanding throughout.

Enquired about change to my pets policy. Changes were made efficiently & helpfully. Received prompt confirmation through email, followed by hard copy through post following day. Impressed so far - hoping I won’t need to claim ever, but peace of mind if my pooch is in need of treatment.
