Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 78 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many customers report being charged significantly more than the initial booking price, often due to unexpected insurance fees or additional services upon arrival. People frequently mention that the company forces them to purchase extra insurance, even when they already have coverage through their credit card or a third-party booking site. Reviewers also describe issues with their reservations not being honored, leading to a lack of available cars or being pressured into renting a different, more expensive vehicle. Some people were dissatisfied with the staff, describing them as unprofessional and unhelpful when addressing these unexpected charges and reservation problems. Additionally, customers occasionally faced issues with hidden fees, such as charges for alleged damage after drop-off or for after-hours services, and experienced difficulties in getting their security deposits returned.

Scam stay far away

I reserved a SUV for $400 and when I arrived to pick up the car they claimed they didn’t have that particular car rental on hand. They required me to book a different car that cost $1500. It was late getting dark in some remote rental car dealership. Fearing for my safety I had to accept the rental. When I returned the car with gas tank filled 3/4 (as it was given to me), they claimed it was full and charged me for gas since I didn’t have a photo of the gas gauge. They are thieves. Don’t do business with these jerks.

Never ever again!

Never ever again. If you don’t want the insurance (Amex Platinum in my case), they let you know you are too late and the gave away your car after 30 minutes (!). “high season!” … (I’ve been alone in the hole building!

You can get an upgrade for 45€ per day (+tax) …

Don’t don’t don’t book with Mexc! Just don’t!

AVOID!!! AVOID!!! AVOID!!!

We hired a rental car from Mex via Hotels.com which included TPL insurance plus we had 3rd party excess insurance so we’re fully covered. Upon arrival at Mex, they tried to sell us their fully comprehensive insurance for an additional $300 but when we declined (because we were already fully covered) we were told that unless we purchase their insurance, they wouldn’t rent the car to us and to seek a refund via Hotels.com. Unfortunately, since it was approaching New Year, cars were in short supply so we had no choice but to purchase their insurance and pursue a credit card chargeback when home which we are doing.

Please avoid this bunch of crooks and rent elsewhere!

They have a hidden fee of $95

They have a hidden fee of $95. I was asked to pay $95 for no reason, they call it as insurance though I had full insurance and my credit card covers collision. He verified everything and said I have to pay $95 and asked if I am ok. I do not have a choice as I have come to their office which is offsite to airport. The situation is like you don't have a choice .
I trusted because it was in my employer perks website.
Never coming back or recommending

worse car rental experience

Don't rent there unless it's fully insured at the time of booking.

Extremely bad experience

Extremely bad experience. This company clearly engages in bait-and-switch practices. I made a reservation in advance, but when I arrived, they did not have the car I booked. Instead, they tried to force me into a “higher category” vehicle charging almost $200 more per day, even though the problem was entirely their fault.

They do not respect reservations at all. It is obvious they overbook on purpose and then rent cars to walk-in customers because they can charge much higher prices without a reservation. When confronted, they offered no real solution, no accountability, and no compensation.

This caused a significant waste of time and money, and I was left with no choice but to find another rental company at the last minute and pay more. Terrible experience and a very disappointing “welcome to Tulum.”

Avoid this company. Do yourself a favor and rent elsewhere.

Incompetent or scammers? Probably both.

I had a car rental reservation made directly through this company’s official website for 9 days, with pickup and return in Tulum.

I arrived on the agreed date and time at the airport counter and was informed that the reserved vehicle was not available. I was then told that the only option would be a higher-category car, with an additional charge of USD 800.

My reservation was confirmed, with price and vehicle category clearly specified, totaling 3,684.72 MXN (approximately USD 200).

The explanation given was:

“It is high season and we only guarantee prepaid reservations.”

However, their website does not offer any option to prepay, and this alleged requirement is not stated in the terms and conditions.

To be clear:

It is not the customer’s responsibility that it is high season — that is exactly why a reservation was made.

It is not the customer’s fault that the booking was not prepaid, when prepayment is not possible at the time of reservation.

Instead of honoring the confirmed booking, the responsibility was shifted to the customer, followed by a proposed “solution” that was completely inconsistent with the original reservation.

A reservation is meant to provide certainty and peace of mind. In this case, it did not. The situation is comparable to booking a hotel at an agreed rate and being told upon arrival that only a much more expensive room is available.

The discussion escalated, and rather than offering a reasonable resolution, I was ultimately asked to leave the counter.

The issue was resolved only because another rental company provided the service as agreed, without changing conditions or pricing.

Based on this experience, this company cannot be considered reliable. This is consistent with feedback available on Trustpilot, TripAdvisor, and Google.
For those short on time, even a summarized review analysis (for example via ChatGPT) reflects recurring complaints of similar situations.

As practical information: if this happens at an airport in Mexico, there is often a PROFECO consumer protection office on-site, and complaints can also be filed online.

FRAUD SCHEME

FRAUD SCHEME
at Chetumal Airport Station

We booked a car in advance and our confirmation clearly stated that liability insurance and the one-way fee were included. The only additional amount mentioned was USD 40 for roadside assistance.

At the MEX Rent A Car counter, we were told we would need to pay an additional USD 1,600 for “liability insurance” and the “one-way fee” — roughly four times the rental price shown in our confirmation. This felt like a bait-and-switch and was completely unacceptable.

When we tried to resolve the issue by contacting support while at the desk, the staff member then changed the story and suddenly claimed there was no car available, despite our valid reservation, and told us to leave. We were left without a car and without any workable solution.

Overall, this was an extremely stressful experience and I would strongly recommend avoiding MEX Rent A Car.

We have also filed a complaint with the relevant authorities.

This company is scamming people

This company is scamming people. PLEASE! Stay away from it. I rented a car through Priceline and paid in advance but before I called them and look on their website to make sure I could use my personal car insurance, THEY SAID YES. So I paid and when I picked up the car they told me the terms and conditions just changed and I have to pay $171 daily for car insurance and denied my own. The extra total was $1,200 for a week. They tried to ripped me off so please do not try to take a chance, you will experience the same thing. When I walked out of the office, there was a ton of people outside that same thing happened to them. This is unnaceptable to let this compa y do this to people and the credit card and Priceline cannot do business with this kind of businesses. They are definitely scammers. I am going to report them everywhere and I have disputed my charge. They are going to investigate since they took my money, and did not provide me with a car. I was robbed!

Brief Summary: Predatory business practices

Brief Summary:
This is a predatory Orlando business targeting travelers. Upon arrival they tell travelers they cannot honor their original car rental reservation and must instead make a new reservation at the current day rate, which is hundreds of dollars higher.

Details: The car rental agency operates under the following names: MEX rent a car, NEXTCAR, Facility rent a car. Zoom rental car, Stride rent a car. While they use a variety of names, in reality it is all the same business and location. When travelers arrive, the perpetrators will claim that their reservation wasn’t processed by the original booking site (Expedia, Travelocity, Priceline, Booking.com, etc) and that they no longer have a vehicle available. They will then tell travelers they must cancel their original reservation and rebook with one of the “other companies” on site at the current daily rate, which is hundreds of dollars higher.

Why it Matters: I was on the receiving end of this predatory scam and witnessed them employing the same bait and switch tactic on every other person who arrived to pick up a car. I spoke with other travelers who told me they were coerced into paying 4 to 5 times the cost of their original reservation. These were often people who couldn't afford to do so and were financially vulnerable, but felt like they had no other choice but to comply. The company poses as a reputable agency but in reality they are targeting and deceiving unwitting travelers and extorting them for higher prices when they no longer have an alternative.

Impact: Travelers at the location are exhausted, vulnerable, and still being preyed upon every day. These people had small children, elderly parents, and important life events they were trying to get to. It’s a scam designed to force people to accept a substantially higher rate under duress. I have never encountered a situation like this in any other city or country I've traveled to. The fact that a business like this is being allowed to continue operating in Orlando is an embarrassment to the entire city, which relies heavily upon tourism.

Expedia, Priceline, Booking.com and other booking sites should remove this company's listings immediately and report the operator to the Florida Consumer Protection office and The Federal Trade Commission.

Insurance Shakedown at LAX

This place feels like a setup from the moment you arrive. You take the economy parking shuttle, then wait again for their rental shuttle, which already puts you at a disadvantage time wise. Once you finally get there, you are packed into a tiny space with no seating and no organization. Even with only about six people ahead of me, it still took over an hour to get a car. That is not bad luck, that is incompetence.

The real problem is the predatory insurance game. If you have your own insurance, they slap a $1,000 hold on your credit card. If your policy happened to renew within the last 45 days, they force you to buy their liability coverage at $30 plus per day. No warning, no transparency, just a surprise charge at the counter. This is not about protection, it is about squeezing customers who are already stuck.

And you are stuck. They are nowhere near other rental agencies, which feels intentional. After wasting your time with shuttles and delays, they know most people will just sign whatever they put in front of you to escape. It feels less like a rental company and more like a hostage negotiation with paperwork.

Between the slow processing, cramped conditions, hidden fees, and pressure tactics, this is one of the worst rental experiences I have ever had. Avoid this place unless you enjoy being nickel-and-dimed, delayed, and treated like your time and money do not matter.

Fraud by double charging insurances…

This company is a fraud by double charging for insurance when it was already paid for. On top of that they only offer 3r party and Collision insurance together to charge the maximum. You need the car as you have no other reservation and they charge you very high amounts for insurance already paid for. Booking.com does not even respond when making claims. They are getting a credit card chargeback bunch of crooks. Never rent from this company.

Avoid!

I i could give it zero, that would still be too high. They weren’t present at the time of our reservation, showed up one hour past and were rude. They also attempted to scam us by requesting to pay for already paid reservation

Bait and Switch - Just don't do it!

This organization practices total bait and switch tactics. I rented at LAX and since I declined their insurance when booking, they required a printout of my coverage. Fine, I was able to provide that. Then they wanted a "loss of use" police (basically covering them for loss of rental income if the car is damaged and can't be rented out). I can kinda understand that, but I didn't have it so they charged me an additional $18/day for that coverage. That was more than the rental itself. It was late and all other rental agencies were closed so I had no choice but to pay it. Also, the car was smokey and they charge $35 for after hours drop off (before 8am or after 7pm).

It’s a big scam

It’s a big scam! Avoid this company completely!
I had a confirmed reservation, but when I arrived, the car I booked didn’t exist. They tried to give me a completely different vehicle that didn’t work for my trip, and I had to rent from another company at a higher price. Total lack of honesty, professionalism, and they haven’t given me my money back.
