Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 81 reviews, most reviewers were unhappy with their experience overall. Many customers expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of the food, noting issues like dry, overcooked, or inedible items, and even foreign objects found in meals. Reviewers also frequently criticized the service, citing long wait times for food, unhelpful staff, and a general lack of attention. The pricing was another significant concern, with many finding the food and drinks to be overpriced, especially given the perceived low quality and small portion sizes. Conversely, some people also felt that the staff could be friendly, welcoming, and efficient, with specific individuals receiving praise for their excellent service. However, other reviewers found the staff to be poorly trained, argumentative, and at times, rude, particularly managers. There was also a lack of consensus regarding the product offerings, with some enjoying their meals while others found the menu choices limited, especially for vegetarian and vegan options.

Bad customer service

Bad customer service. Food was OK but expensive for what it was. I think we won't be visiting again for a while, if ever.

Waterloo Cross at Uffculme

Visited the Waterloo Cross at Uffculme, Devon on my way to S/Molton to enquire about a recent promotion. Although they were not sure if they could help, they went out of their way to find the information I needed. Extremely satisfied with the result from very friendly and accommodating staff. Had no time to eat there on this occasion, but I have in the past and will certainly do so next time.

If you’re a fan of Fawlty Towers then…

If you’re a fan of Fawlty Towers then this is the place for you. Obnoxious, rude and incompetent management and no response to complaints until pressured. After expressing my concerns through their complaint system twice, I eventually had to contact the area manager to express my dissatisfaction. Couldn’t even have a coffee with my breakfast as and I quote ‘ the machine is clogged up with milk!”

Although a budget hotel I underestimated how bad it would be.

I will never stay at a Marstons hotel again or set foot in one of their pubs.

Avoid unless you really want the full Fawlty Towers experience.

Visited Marston’s in Western Super mare. Wasn’t busy, waitress spoke to the couple next to me the whole time I was ordering. Got one meal incorrect. We had Philly cheese steak sandwich. Was the worst meal I have ever had. Steak was meant to be medium rare, came well done, 3 pieces of steak two very chewy, cold, no onions, Philly cheese cold and undercooked, about 5 chips on the plate. Massive disappointment, will never eat here again. Looked and tasted awful. Daughters meal wrong so she ended up eating on her own. Staff friendly, worst place I’ve ever eaten.

Beware of Marston's gratuity scam

Beware of Marston's gratuity scam. They'll ask you to tap the card machine twice. They've never asked me to tap it twice before so I just thought it hadn't taken the first time. I hadn't got my glasses when I was at the bar and I was given a receipt, which (my fault) I only checked when I got home. He did tell me how much the meals were with drinks, £25.83, and I thought that sounded about right for what we had. When I got home the wife said the receipt was for £31.00. An item appeared showing a gratuity of £5.17. I wouldn't mind but a bit of warning wouldn't go amiss. Sorry, Marston's, but we won't be visiting the Spread Eagle at Gailey again. Won't miss the beer, though.

Think 1 star is being overly generous

Think 1 star is being overly generous. My experience is of the Queen of Hearts in Runcorn, this review is a criticism of Marstons, NOT the pub. The staff at the pub are overworked, understaffed and generally excellent at what they are able to do within the constraints of working for Marstons.

They have just released a new menu with an increase in price of approx £1.50 per meal, the prices are well in excess of their rivals in the area, for a same standard meal. Drinks prices increase at least 4 times per year, putting their prices well beyond any other pubs locally. Prices are set at around about city centre levels, for a pub, on a council estate.

The corporate greed from this company is second to none. It's gone from being a busy, vibrant pub, to an empty shell, no entertainment barely, and for a business pricing themselves out of the market, they don't appear to want to invest in refurbishing the pub, to reflect the aspirations their ridiculous prices suggest.

Since opening the pub has deteriorated year on year, people won't go in because of the prices. Marstons have cut staff hours considerably - we visited a few weeks ago and there was one kitchen staff member and one bar staff on shift, run off their feet, yet Marston's think it's justifiable to charge £6-£7 a pint for the pleasure of poor, stretched service.

Marston's, hang your heads in shame, you're riddled with corporate greed, and completely negligent of your staff and your customers. As long as it lines the big brass pockets though eh! Pathetic.

The clock warehouse shardlow

The prices are wild-not enough staff on, one on the bar took 20 mins to take our drinks order, we had to wait to be seated, we pre booked on line but the table wasn’t ready the lady who seated us left us standing around for 15 mins they then cleaned a table and showed us to it (it was super busy but as stated above not enough staff, one on the bar, one arranging tables) once seated the lady took our order quickly 2 in our party wanted chicken and chorizo flatbreads, which were priced at £17.49 each (for a flatbread that’s wild and more expensive that the Malbec pie🤷🏻‍♀️) we were informed chef hadn’t prepared the chicken ones but we could have halloumi which were priced the same while waiting for our food the ceiling above us started to crumble, this is an OLD OLD venue besides a canal with beams etc it’s quite quaint and beautifully laid out some of the ceiling bits landed in our glasses of wine (£26 for Pinot blush) the waitress was excellent at this stage apologised moved our table and replaced the wine! The food arrived beautifully presented, but the chips were cold 🥶 the flat bread was lovely but it should be for £17.49 sadly the prices and lack of staff means we won’t visit again, beautiful pub just massively overpriced and the lack of staff made it difficult to score them higher

I would give a zero if possible.

I would give a zero if possible.
Worst company I have ever worked for.
They offer a partnership, then charge you for everything.
You end up with no money to employ staff, end up working 12-14hrs a day, every day.
For instance if a burger patty goes out of date or gets over cooked. They charge you the full retail price for it !!
Or a £20 bottle of spirits gets taken, you are charged £160-£180 for this alone.
Complete joke of a company, who refuse to spend any money on revamping the old run down properties.

We are coming back in a few weeks to visit and have a reservation with you on May 8th Room 3 for a joint birthday celebration. Thanks for a great stay.
Best wishes,

Marstons unlawful practice.

I’ve been to several Marstons run pubs in Swansea and not one of them has a price list for drinks, which is unlawful. Next time you’re in one of their pubs, ask to see the drinks menu, and by law they’ve got to provide one.
They probably don’t want to put people off before they order a drink. Total rip-off.

Poor experience booking a hotel stay

Booked a hotel stay with Martson's for September 2026. Stayed in the hotel previously. They've updated their booking system, so there's now members and non member pricing. Tried to registered to be a member, but the registration didn't complete (in fairness I think I may have missed a step), but the price displayed remained the lower price all the way up until after I'd completed payment. Not impressed by the lack of clarity. I've emailed the hotel in question, and will update accordingly, but not impressed. It's a shame as the hotel and pub were great the last time.

Server was great... but thats about it.

Parking easy, location in Weston super Mare good. I was part of a group of 5. asked for a cup of tea on arrival. It was at best lukewarm. I ordered tomato soup and a roll and butter for lunch. After 30 plus minutes the soup arrived. No butter (I asked for plenty) 175ml of soup which was cold and two pieces of bread. Asked for soup to be heated up. Less soup arrived with something floating on it. I sent it back and asked for a refund which was sort. Server was fine. Table sticky... shame as it has the making of a nice place

Disgusting company to work for couldn’t care less about their staff

Absolutely dreadful company to work for and incredibly selfish as a pub we make tons of money yet Marston’s still feel the need to cut staffs hours so dramatically to the point where I was getting 16hrs a week and I was hired full time worst part is they have the money to pay their staff they just want to get back to 1 billion and I think they’re a disgusting company making their staff suffer so they can get their overall net worth up disgusting and they should be deeply ashemed of themselves

Marston's raise their prices yet again

Marston's raise their prices yet again. I think 4 times this year. A pint of fosters has just risen again by 5p, coincidentally just in time for the Christmas trade.
They don't display prices in their pubs (I thought that was the law?) I understand why they don't do so, cos they increase so often, would be embarrassing. Even the pub managers aren't always aware of price increases.

4 price rises in the last year in our local marstons in walsall.A pint is actually 1.30 cheaper in a freehouse pub we know in the middle of nowhere in Shropshire. Another brewery that'll price themselves out of the market if they carry on mugging their regulars off
