Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 63 reviews, reviewers overwhelmingly had a great experience with this company. Customers frequently highlight the ease of use and convenience of the service, making it simple to borrow and return items. Many appreciate the wide range of available products, which are often in good working order and come with necessary accessories. This service is seen as a valuable solution for saving money and space, especially for items used infrequently, and is particularly beneficial during times of financial constraint. However, some people were dissatisfied with the user experience, finding the process unfriendly or encountering issues with item condition, such as receiving smelly or non-functional tools. A few other people also felt that the pricing was not always clear, leading to unexpected charges, or that communication regarding missing parts after return was problematic.

I love how easy it is

I love how easy it is. Just book online, turn up, enter the code and the little locker opens and voila! - you can borrow whatever you need. It changes your whole outlook; you don’t need to buy ‘stuff’, you can borrow things. Brilliant!

Easy to book and use this service

Easy to book and use this service, picked my pressure washer from Dalston Library lockers and it was open early in the morning which helped. It has a wide range of things you can borrow, for very little . I would really recommend this brilliant idea.

We have been back several times to…

We have been back several times to borrow the carpet cleaner! It’s great to be able to borrow a professional quality item that we couldn’t afford or store. Same with all the other items - it’s great to be able to hire something that we might only use once instead of being wasteful. The system is really straightforward to use and we have always found staff friendly and helpful.

Charged £30 with zero warning

Charged £30 with zero warning — disappointing

I borrowed a power washer and returned it, but inadvertently left out a small box of washer parts. No call, no text, no email, just a £30 charge applied to my account. The first I knew of the issue was the money already gone.

This is a community-focused organisation built around trust and sustainability. Charging members £30 without a single attempt to contact them and resolve it amicably sits very badly with those values. I'd have returned the parts the same day if anyone had asked.

Hi Joe! As we explained in our email conversation, we did indeed send an email two weeks prior to the charge, which we've sent you further evidence of directly. On our end, because we had no response after two weeks, we charged the replacement fee. From your end, it appears you didn't receive our email, so you weren't aware of any notice being given until the charge came through.

We've already noted that we would be more than happy to refund the charge, in full, once you have returned the tap adaptors, which you confirmed that you did still have two weeks after your return. As far as we're aware, you still haven't returned those parts.

An excellent and invaluable service

I’ve used the Library of Things a couple of times now. I’ve borrowed a drill to put up some shelves and a mic and speaker to host a house party. It’s so easy and takes away all the hassle of buying and then storing something you’ll only use once. The lockers are so easy to use, the communication is brilliant - you get so many text and email reminders with all the information.

I had an issue with my Thing when I borrowed the speaker as it was being fixed at my local library so I got moved to a different nearby locker and a small discount.

This organisation really care about giving back to the community. They also have email newsletter which are full of opportunities, tips and tricks and community projects. I recommend it to all my friends particularly renters!

Really low prices and more sharing!

Really low prices, it was easy to find out what is available right now and it's wonderful that I don't have to buy a carpet deep-cleaner, when we can have a communal one instead! After this good first time I think I will book it every six months.
Saves house space and a lot of money, thank you so much for providing this service!

Reasonable prices and easy to use service.

I've used this service countless times since moving house. My flat is tight on space, so items like a ladder, gardening tools or industrial hoovers aren't things we can have lying around gathering dust. Popping down to the local library to pick these things up as we need them was incredibly useful. Reasonable prices and easy to use service.

Highly recommend!

This is a brilliant idea! Very convenient and close to home. We've been borrowing the Carper Cleaner for a couple of years and it works well. Easy to book, collect, use and return. Makes so much sense. Reduces waste and saves your pocket! :)

Received the tool in horrible…

Received the tool in horrible condition, smelly, falling apart, and not working.
Now they let me pay for it more than the tool is worth because I failed to claim the defect.
It's obviously been in an unusable state for a long time, yet it's still being lent out, and I had to pay for it.
If power tools are being inspected in the same intervals, this is just dangerous.
Shady practice, rip-off.
For the money wasted, I could have bought a new tool.

Hi Phil, thanks for getting in touch! We sent you an email about this which we haven't heard back from, which explains our policy further.

The machine was found to be in terribly poor condition after your borrow, and you hadn't reported this to us. As outlined in our terms, any missing or damaged parts not reported at collection may be chargeable, and we don’t charge for reasonable wear and tear when it’s reported promptly. But where damage isn’t reported at the time, we’re limited in how we can attribute it after the fact. As this wasn’t raised with us during the borrow, to review this fairly, we would need any photos showing the condition of the cleaner at the point of collection or any additional evidence that supports that the damage was already present. If you’re able to share this, we can reassess the charges alongside the technician’s report.

We do want to resolve this properly and fairly, and if there’s clear evidence the condition was pre-existing, we will absolutely take that into account. Thank you!
