Experienced guitar and music theory teacher, online and in person. I help guitarists and musicians of all ages and abilities make real progress, whether that's exam success, songwriting, university entry, or just playing for fun. Teaching since 2002, self-employed since 2012, with a 100% pass rate across graded exams (RSL, RGT/LCM, ABRSM, Trinity). I specialise in building practice routines that actually fit the person doing them, and in diagnosing exactly what's holding a student back so we fix the right thing, not just the obvious thing. About 80% of my students now learn via Zoom, joining me from the UK, Europe, the US, and Australia — many found me through my YouTube channel, Jo Bywater Guitar Tuition. I teach guitar (electric & acoustic) from beginner to intermediate, graded exams, and songwriting, across rock, pop, folk, blues, and jazz. My approach is bespoke: everyone learns differently and wants different things from playing, so my job is to work out what motivates you and build lessons around that.

A late learner .

I'm in my mid 70's & have been dabbling with my guitar since COVID, I'd got to the stage that I could strum a few popular ballads while I sang along but I knew I was only scratching the surface of guitar play. After looking at many of the teachers on YouTube, I decided to solicit her help with my learning.
Jo very quickly established where my playing skills were at & guided me through what I needed to do with one of the songs I liked to play so that I'd be confident to play it in any company, within reason!. Where my playing goes from here is going to be relative to my skill & my commitment to practice. I'm confident that Jo has the knowledge, skill & patience to help me to play reasonable guitar once I do the learning & practice.
I highly recommend Jo to anyone needing help with their guitar playing.

My daughter has been having lessons from Jo for several years now. During this time she was diagnosed with autism and struggled with social anxiety. She enjoys her lessons with Jo and has developed so much during this time, so much so that last year my daughter had the confidence with Jo’s help to play with a family friend in a talent competition for her inclusion football club, she would not have been able to do this without Jo’s help and guidance.
I would highly recommend Jo to anybody looking for a teacher.
Thanks Jo.

Jo is a great teacher

Jo is a great teacher, endlessly patient with my attempts to play guitar. I'm a beginner guitarist, only starting in my late 70s, so patience is necessary! She always works at my pace, encouraging and guiding - and helps me find ways to work around (hands aren't as stretchy as they used to be....). I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy guitar when I started, but Jo has really helped me to get loads of pleasure out of it - as well as learn some music theory in the process - so I look forward to her lessons.

Jo is a highly recommend guitar teacher.

After learning a lot from Jo’s YouTube channel I booked a series of online lessons. Jo guided me through the Grade 3 London College of Music exam. Each half-hour lesson was well structured to cover each part of the syllabus. Her calm and encouraging approach gave me the confidence to think beyond the exam and develop my musicianship. The result was that I passed the exam with a distinction. I would recommend Jo’s lessons whatever your focus is or level of ability.

Fab guitar lessons!

I have been having guitar lessons with Jo for a few years now and have found Jo to be an excellent and patient teacher. As an adult returning to music lessons I felt a bit nervous but Jo instantly made me feel at ease. I’ve had lessons with Jo both in person and online and have found both formats accessible and enjoyable. Jo has helped me to make noticeable progress over the years, including becoming more proficient with barre chords, and I now have a large catalogue of songs, spanning multiple genres, that I can return to and play. I’d recommend Jo to anyone that’s thinking of taking up guitar lessons!

Jo is such an amazing teacher

Jo is such an amazing teacher. She has taught my son guitar since he was seven - he is now nearly 16 - and in that time he has got a music place at school and chosen to do GSCE Music. Jo has always gone above and beyond as a teacher - looking out for Tom and course correcting him if he ever needed it, while also being kind, supportive and a great friend. Would recommend 100%.

Jo is the one of the best tutors out there!

Jo is the one of the best and professional tutors out there! I had zero confidence when I first started learning guitar and struggled with finger coordination along with just learning to play a song in general. After a month I was able to switch between chords at ease, coordination improved dramatically and I can pick up on the rhythm of songs and chord changes much better in songs.

Inclusive Guitar Tuition

Jo has provided me with an excellent learning experience. She has enabled me to progress my guitar journey with patience and a wealth of knowledge. As a blind guitarist she has asked me at every stage, what would work for me, how can she help me get the most out of our lessons. I look forward to our lessons and being a better guitarist with the help of Jo.

Thank you!

I first met Jo when my daughter took an interest in playing guitar when she was around 6 years old. Given my daughter was so young at the time, I wanted to be present while she got started with the lessons which Jo welcomed and accommodated. They quickly formed a great friendship and I soon felt comfortable leaving her under Jo’s supervision.
My daughter plays guitar for enjoyment and I think Jo’s kindness and patience has contributed to her passion for wanting to play.
Jo has been a great role model in her life and I’m grateful for all the time they have spent together ❤️

My son’s been learning from Jo for a year now. These are his words: “Jo has lots of humour. She teaches guitar with an even split of fun and learning. She teaches well and always gives tips on how to do better when I do things even slightly wrong. You can see the passion in her and definitely doesn’t teach only for money. She always encourages me to go on further even when I am a bit tired.”

Simply the best

Jo has been teaching my 16 year old son to play guitar since the start of the year, she has been very patient and supportive with him as he has never played the instrument before. She put my son at ease from his first lesson and he speaks very highly of Jo. We would definitely recommend her as she is one of the best teachers out there.

Jo is a brilliant teacher

Jo is a brilliant teacher, having done much research on instructors/teachers online Jo stood out to me and I am glad I reached out. Having never played guitar before, her patience, care and time during my sessions was more than I could have hoped. Jo has excellent communication and is generally such a nice, polite and inspiring teacher.

Amazing guitar teacher

I have been a student of Jo’s for several years now, and I couldn't be happier with the progress I've made as a guitarist. Throughout the years, she has consistently demonstrated unwavering patience as I stumbled through chords, struggled with complex melodies, and forgot various scales. I always feel that I can ask questions without hesitation and make mistakes without feeling discouraged. After transitioning from in-person to online lessons during and after Covid, she has shown flexibility in different lesson formats. She tailors lessons to my needs, ensuring a comfortable pace while continually challenging myself. Jo's teaching is exceptional and I highly recommend her to anyone who wants to learn.
