Irwins attended site promptly to fix an urgent issue. The charge however was absolutely outrageous. Nearly $7k for less than 2 hours labour and 1.5 metres of pipe. When queried about the cost, they simply shrugged their shoulders and said that it was automated and they had no control over costs. I was coerced in to signing the quote as there was water pouring out of the broken pipe and they wouldn't turn of the water at the mains until the quote was signed. I feel totally violated.
After mediation, I was offered a 15% "pensioner's discount" - still an exorbitant and unjustified charge. During the mediation process I was accused of lying (I didn't) so all up, a very unhappy experience.
If only I had done my research thoroughly….
Yesterday a plumber from Irwin’s came to look at my blocked drain, toilet wasn’t fully functioning. They “graciously” waived the callout fee so they could charge me $1250 for less than 80 mins of work. That’s more than $15 a minute (don’t be a doctor/lawyer, be a plumber). The clay drains (as suspected) had roots growing through and would be a “big job”. A big job costing more than $14,000. Offered to waive today’s fee if I agreed to proceed. Should be offering that in the first place. I don’t have that kind of money….queue supervisor on the phone telling me that it really needs to be done. I felt bamboozled, embarrassed, shocked. I was then asked did I have a ballpark price of what I’d like to spend….huh? My father (in Ireland) has been a plumber for 50+ years, I could fly him out and feed him a couple of steak dinners for half that price and the work would be done to perfection. We have now been quoted $3000 by a smaller, highly regarded, less money hungry company. I truly believe Irwin’s have a team of dozens of plumbers whose job is to quote big numbers to unsuspecting customers and see who’ll take the bait. The plumber didn’t even put the caps back on the sewer lines so our blockage could become much worse, with leaves and debris adding to the problem. At the end, I was asked to leave a review whilst the plumber was standing there. Can you say railroading anyone, how they get their good reviews me thinks. BEWARE!! Get a second opinion. I paid $1250 yesterday for absolutely NOTHING. Spend your hard earned money elsewhere….please learn from my mistake.

I thought I had enough trust in the industry to comfortably call a plumber from Irwin’s Plumbing to fix our hot water issue but this experience completely destroyed any trust I had in tradespeople providing a genuine and honest service. Instead of feeling like a customer needing help, my partner was made to feel like prey.
The plumber had attended for 5 minutes before providing my partner with a quotation of over $600 to run some apparent testing, 30 minutes into that testing he then gave my partner a quote for over $6000 for a replacement of our hot water system. He was extremely pushy and provided us with no transparency and still charged us over $600 with no real repair works carried out.
I strongly recommend anyone considering this company get multiple opinions before agreeing to anything.
