The most INEPT Govt Agency award goes to.....

If there were an award for the most dysfunctional government agency, the IRS would be a serious contender. They don't even deserve 1 star.

I called at 8:00 a.m. sharp (when they say they open) because I needed something incredibly simple: to set up a payment plan that needed approval - I tried online and but could not afford the minimum online payment the IRS system demanded. Rather than giving taxpayers flexibility, the website forces people into a one-size-fits-all solution, leaving no practical option except calling.

That phone system is an absolute disaster. The voice recognition is infuriating. If you don’t respond exactly how it expects, it repeatedly says it can’t understand you. There isn’t even an option to bypass the voice prompts and use the keypad exclusively. In 2026, with the billions of dollars collected by this agency every year, how is this still the technology taxpayers are forced to use?

After fighting through endless menus, entering my Social Security number, and finally requesting a representative, I was asked for a PIN I hadn’t used in years. I followed the instructions and said I’d forgotten it, only to be told that no one was available to help and that I needed to call back later.

Later? It was barely 8:15 in the morning—fifteen minutes after the phone lines opened. SO I kept calling and going through that BS to try and get some govt employee that we know doesn't give a crap and is most likely avoiding the phones.

How can an agency that expects absolute compliance from taxpayers be completely unprepared to answer its own phones when business hours begin? Taxpayers are expected to meet strict deadlines, pay penalties, and navigate endless bureaucracy, yet the IRS can’t provide basic customer service for people who are actually trying to pay what they owe.

The irony is almost unbelievable. I wasn’t calling to avoid paying. I was calling because I wanted to make arrangements to pay responsibly. Instead of helping, the system created obstacle after obstacle.

The entire experience felt less like a modern public service and more like navigating an outdated bureaucracy that seems designed to wear people down until they give up. The technology is antiquated, the phone system is maddening, and the customer experience is unacceptable.

Taxpayers deserve far better than this. If the IRS expects professionalism and accountability from the public, it should hold itself to the same standard. Screw them.

THE ALLOW RACISM AND DISCRIMINATION AGAINST DISABLED WORKERS, MANAGERS CAN DO ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES WITH NO REPERCUSSIONS

DO NOT WORK HERE IF YOU HAVE DIGNITY. I recently became disabled and my manager in PPU, she has not been a good manager at all: She’s openly racist towards myself as a woman of color & other minorities! I reported to her boss. He’s also guilty & done NOTHING to protect me & he has been backing her up with her lies & forgery to Texas Work Force! I took unpaid FMLA leave at the end of April 2026, due to the fact that I am now currently disabled. My manager advised that I take medical leave for 3 months to heal but then all of sudden when I actually took her advice to take care of my health, she turned around & sent me numerous fabricated AWOL notices to my apartment. Not only did she do that, she used one of my coworkers to harass me. When that didn’t work she continued to harass me the ENTIRE TIME during unpaid leave making my disabilities much worse. I sent a stated text message explaining my leave, so the AWOL notices were a form of her discharging me from my position. I also reported her for her racist comments on the floor, her creepy inappropriate comments and questions regarding my bathroom breaks..Even on my medical leave, I haven’t been able to catch a break from this lunatic manager in PPU! The manager is upset all because I blew the whistle on her for her gross misconduct and negligence regarding my health & told her that due to my disabilities, I can no longer work my alternative schedule 5/4/9. Not only is the manager extremely crazy & erratic, she thinks she’s above the law! I filed for unemployment with TWC after she let me go for asking for reasonable accommodations, even tho I have an reasonable accommodation form that got filled out on 5/12/26 by I and my doctor stating what I needed to operate on the daily basis. First the manager or someone went in my system to falsify my wages to TWC claiming that I made only $6 a pay period which got me denied for benefits because I didn’t make enough to qualify for benefits. Once I submitted my W2 Form, my wages per week I was supposed to receive went from $305 then TWC recalculated my benefits and I was mailed that my amount for unemployment benefits would be $485 a week. I had a phone call with a hearing office from TWC and not only did he continue to talk over me and not listen, he wasn’t able to see the discrepancies between my employers lies. I unploaded an overwhelmingly amount of evidence & he clearly took the word of my manager even tho she is a narcissist and habitual liar! A bad liar!! I was told by the officer that my manager, told TWC that i never took medical leave & that I was working in office still. Ok if that were the case, why did she continue to harass me with so many AWOL notices if I’m “working” as she falsely claimed? When i explained my side of the story, TWC called my employer back and they STILL kept on lying trying to cover for her & the fact that she discharged me for my disabilities. She also lied heavily and said that I never requested for accommodations when there’s numerous text messages I sent her that she blantly ignored my RA requests. Then she lied to TWC offices and said that I actually just quit to my disabilities which also was NOT AT ALL TRUE!! There’s no text messages, email or proof that I resigned. I never turned in my work badge which is usually the procedure for when you leave a federal agency. My manager never had me sign a resignation form & it’s also contradictory how she can go from lying about my wages, which is FRAUD, to lying that I’m working then turning around and saying that I quit?? How is it possible to simultaneously work and quit a job at the same time? Taking FMLA leave isn’t “misconduct.” It’s my right as an employee. Not only did my manage lie a whole lot on me, none of her lies make sense and I’m truly mind boggled how the TWC officer couldn’t read between the lines of the manager’s bullshit nor do I think TWC truly took the time to look over all the crucial evidence that I uploaded for my case. So I got denied again because my manager in PPU keeps lying & trying to cover her ass for her impulsive behavior of firing me. Manager can’t claim that I wasn’t a good worker because I had a 4.5 as far as performance and she never had an issue with me the 2 years that I worked in the department until she got the role of a supervisor. Not only did she commit fraud and forgery, I still have my work badge in my possession so how is she going to claim I quit when I never turned in any badge?? I am planning to sue the company in the future for not only allowing somebody extremely incompetent to be blantly racist towards black people and other minorities, Manager also messy as hell and gossips about everyone & she’s already gotten away with literally everything. Nobody helped me out!. She doesn’t follow the rules in the IRM and I have no idea why they won’t remove her. THIS TOXIC MANAGER NEEDS TO BE FIRED FOR GROSS MISCONDUCT ASAP!

It is unfortunate that negative stars…

It is unfortunate that negative stars don't exist much like a number line, because this organization would not be getting even 1 star. Working with my accountant through an administrative error on the IRS part, which they acknowledged, however have failed to come to a resolution as of yet even though the error was clearly on the agency's end. Phone calls are left on hold for several hours only to be disconnected and end users having to start the process all over again. Because you know, we are all just sitting at home with nothing else to do but listen to whatever on-hold music is there. As a Federal employee, I am fully aware of the staffing cuts/shortages, resource and funding cuts, we are ALL experiencing it. But is that your excuse? If you cannot do a job, please resign, find something else. You are there to provide a service. As an employee of VA, if you are sick, I will make sure you are taken care of. Do your job. Be better. Or find something else. You are a nuisance and doing nothing but hurting hard working tax prayers. Do better.

So IRS is quick to take our money, but to gice our money or inquire about our money it takes long call hours .. 2 hours , 3 hours of wait time for a call? What do they do that takes so long? Sit and enjoy the air conditioner .. their customer service number is bogus. They don't help . The IRS is just a major joke and I am getting an incentive to write this. Tax me on that too .

NO HELP

Been trying all day to talk with someone about a notice I received. Every number you call or get transferred to ends up tellling you to call back later...too busy to help you? At ONE point I was able to leave a call back number. They called back about an hour later. Started talking to the rep and she hung up. What is going on with this place. Service is zero?????? What are we paying them for? It is now 4:38 ET and I am still on hold and have been for over an hour. Help?

IRS Phone numbers are BS

Automated service is designed to ignore callers and repeat unhelpful information. I've waited *more than * 4 weeks and I still don't have my refund AND the website DOES NOT UPDATE DAILY. Our governmental offices are HORRIBLE!

I have tried for HOURS OVER SEVERAL DAYS to log in, and I already did my multi-factor approval. But that INFAMOUS sign-in loop appears EVERY TIME. I have searched EVERYWHERE and added incognito, etc., etc. what will happen to my refund since I can’t add my bank info. Is there a HUMAN at IRS that can break the curse on this website?

I called everyday can never get a hold…

I called everyday can never get a hold of someone to verify if document was recieved. As am writing this review I am on the phone for one hr and 34 min .i chose a call back believing that i would get someone since i waited hrs on the phone daily with no answers. Today I chose call back which I got the return call but sat on the line with staff having their own conversation; even said good bye to ones leaving for the night. Right at this moment singing in the back ground . one hr plus still no answer to the phone,I decide to hold on with update on time spent just listening. Seems like its one person there now. 8:10 pm am on the phone still hearing the individual in the background .at 8:16pm I got disconnected no one ever came to the phone. So I spent two hrs on the phone just listening to staff without anyone acknowledging I was on the phone.

Web site is not user friendly and cannot help with anything outside a very limited algorithm! Chat just spits out general generic information. Telephone number is useless. On hold for over 3 hours a day for 5 days in a row. Tax office, one man show, bad attitude and says he can’t see all people in line. 13 people in line, but he says he has other duties. Real screw you attitude to the tax paying public. Super frustrating!

IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE WHO CARES

IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE WHO CARES? Phone simply hangs up and says call back tomorrow. Called many times. Called to make an appointment and that phone line also directs you to website and disconnects the call. Website has no way of making appointment and sends you to the same # that hung up on me. Walk into an office and she just keeps me in line staring at me with no one in front of her for 10-15 minutes. When she calls me, I tell her there is something wrong with the phone system and she said no, this is normal. what do you expect. This is a sign of the time. What?? Don't send these stupid notices asking for documents if you will not allow me to call or email or contact someone simply to say you already have it. Why are there no morals anymore? Why are these people's consciousness comfortable getting paid to abuse others??

I've called them over 100 times

I've called them over 100 times, literally, since March, I have spoken with someone 7 times out of those calls. The agents always claim they can't see your information, or the information they are claiming to need hasn't been uploaded...when I can see all of the information on my IDMe account. It is like they get off on violating constitutional and taxpayer rights. The agencies that are supposed to help, have just as long of a wait, and don't guarantee they can help you. So basically the IRS gets to continue to violate Tax Payers and our government chooses to do NOTHING about it.

REPRESENTATIVES: EXTREMELY RUDE, DISRESPECTFUL AND UNHELPFUL

First off the IRS representatives are EXTREMELY RUDE, DISRESPECTFUL AND UNHELPFUL, adding the unbelievable time you wait on hold for one of rude individuals to answer. Their system is annoying, it takes you FOREVER and 30 buttons later to even talk to a person.

I also made my payment in full on Friday and because it takes forever for the IRS to process the payment it’s still accruing interest as it went up another $5 dollar since Friday!

This really is unreal as I made a plan to pay it in full by Friday and it’s still according interest. Talk about fraud and screwing the person who’s supposed to be making a payment in this HORRID ECONOMIC TIME!!!
