Unreliable, unreasonable, untrustworthy & unethical - not a patch on what they used to be.
This hair salon is in Wokingham, UK - NOT USA.
I had an appointment on 1 July. When booking, I'd specifically asked about extra cost to get my hair thinned because it was so important to me (I have a LOT of hair, which hasn't been thinned for a long time).
I was told it was covered in the cost of a cut.
My wants were just to cut the length straight across & "thin to within an inch of its life"; nothing else.
The young woman that did my hair dealt with the length fine, then set to thinning - with an ordinary pair of scissors. Tiny little snips on tiny little strands (which would take forever with my hair). She resisted at least 2 suggestions to use thinning scissors. Time dragged. When she said she was done, it didn't look or feel like she'd even started. I asked her to do more, & got just a few more tiny snips out of it.
She seemed to feel as frustrated as I was, & scared to do more; so she got a tip for time & effort.
I left with hair like a 70's Kate Bush, & resolved to book in with someone else to get it thinned properly & keep the peace - I didn't want to hurt her feelings, or kick up a fuss.
Despite having had just a thin at the same salon in the past, when I called the next morning asking for the cost of one, I was told it couldn't be booked - that I'd have to book a cut. I explained that I'd had a cut just the day before, was unhappy with the thin, & just wanted that. The receptionist said she'd check for a price & get back to me. Then the drama began.
I was told I'd have to go back in & see the same young stylist. I resisted that. She was pleasant, but neither of us needed to go through the same ordeal all over again. I said I needed someone that would use thinning scissors & wasn't afraid to hack away.
I continued to request a price, but none was forthcoming. Apparently, this was to be a complementary re-do, but strictly on their terms. Having already created the kind of drama that I'd wanted to avoid with the initial stylist, they dictated appointment times, days & stylists twice (the second one being very inconvenient for me) - then cancelled both.
Communications were unpleasant. I was treated like an unwanted inconvenience & was getting stressed enough for my partner to notice & ask about it. When I told him, he expressed disbelief ("It's been thinned? Really?? Where?!?").
1st cancellation was a few hours before appointment time, & 2nd around 40 minutes before I was due to leave home for it.
The 2nd was the kicker - an unknown mobile number that I only called back because I thought it might be urgent & related to my mother (cancer).
I'd had less than 6 hours sleep specifically due to the appointment time, & it was a senior salon representative/manager. Her tone of voice was hostile as she informed me that my appointment was being cancelled again. She said that after speaking to the young woman that had cut my hair & another (unknown & uninvolved) staff member, she'd decided that my hair had already been thinned satisfactorily, & besides, it was a Friday, which was their busiest day of the week & they didn't have time. She offered a refund.
I was stunned. I declined the refund. I didn't want a refund - what I wanted was to get rid of excess hair prior to a planned hair colour & balayage, but she'd apparently decided to deny that, regardless of the prior offers I'd made to pay extra for it.
There are times in life when you literally can't believe your own ears. Listening to what she had to say less than 40 minutes before I was due to leave home for the appointment was one of them.
In all my years on this earth, I've never even heard of a salon manager refusing to deal with a client based solely on conversation with staff, without even being willing to check the client's hair.
Because of course the stylist & uninvolved 3rd party staff member must be completely objective, of course I'm to blame for the day of the week that salon staff dictated to me, & of course women that have known their own hair for almost 60 years often want to destroy the appearance of it by overthinning just because they hope to somehow wind a salon manager up for a laugh - right?
I'm genuinely intrigued by the deciding thought processes.
I'll admit that during the conversation that ensued, the woman said she'd see if she could work something out at a later date; but at this point, I really don't want to go back. Ever.
All I'd wanted was to discreetly get my hair thinned properly without any hurt feelings or drama. For all my efforts at trying to do so, the salon has done its utmost to produce the opposite outcome.
It's a shame to note how much it's devolved from the welcoming, relaxed environment it once had.
I'm currently left with thick clumps of hair at the back of my head. All of it needs thinning, but I'm sure I'll find somewhere else willing to take my money & provide the service without being so unprofessional, unreasonable, unreliable & hostile.
