No delivery commitment and poor communication – unacceptable first experience

This was our first order with Grasslands and, unfortunately, it has been a very poor experience.

Following payment, we received a series of holding emails with changing explanations, but at no point were we provided with a firm or reliable delivery date. Despite repeated requests for clarity, no confirmed timeframe was ever given.

After several weeks without a substantive update or confirmed delivery date, we were left with no option but to cancel the order and request a refund.

For a first order, this fell well below acceptable standards. Based on this experience, we would not place further orders unless communication and order certainty improve significantly.

Disappointing Experience Due to Unclear Colour Options

The flower arrived on time and was well packaged. However, the colour selection was not clearly explained, and although the option I selected was listed under “mixed colours”, the flower pictured clearly represented the colour I was expecting. As a result, I received a colour that was not suitable for the occasion, as it was intended as a gift.

I contacted the nursery to see whether this could be resolved, but unfortunately the response was very unhelpful. Due to this experience, I would not purchase from them again.

Carpinus betulus 'Lucas'

I ordered 5 Carpinus betulus 'Lucas'. The trees are a good size and straight. The root balls are very compact. The driver very happily carried the trees through into the back garden. We started planting them today.

Paid over £900 but no goods have arrived

I ordered 7 trees in September and paid over £900. The were due for delivery in November and I have phoned and emailed a number of times to get an update on when they are likely to get delivered. I keep getting fobbed off saying they will contact me with a date and never do. At a loss as to what to do next.

How to lose a customer. Threw 200cm hedges into my neighbour's garden!

I ordered nearly £500 worth of shubs and trees for my property. Before ordering, I confirmed that they could arrange a delivery time that would work so that I could ensure someone was there to help me with the delivery. They assured me that they would let me know in advance when the delivery would be and that the team would unload them at my property. I had ordered rootball hedging for December delivery, which would be within 2 weeks of ordering according to their own policies etc.

1. First off they didn't send my any kind of order confirmation, I had to chase them up for that (they also opted me in for email marketing without consent along with the invoice).
2. Nearly two weeks later I still hadn't heard anything about delivery. The staff member refused to even tell me when I'd be notified of the delivery date, saying they would 'email the transport team but can't make any guarantees'. I didn't hear anything further.
3. This morning, I get a text message at 7am saying the team was delivering in 30 mins. By the time I saw it, they'd chucked all those huge trees into my neighbour's yard! Not even a phone call or a buzz at the door. Now I've had to interrupt my workday to try to find someone to help me move them onto my property, I'm 5'1 and I simply can't move them myself, which is why I asked about delivery before I even ordered. Additionally, I've had to re-organize gardening help at short notice.
4. When I called about this, I got a staff member stating 'on the website it says curbside delivery' and 'if you have a problem, send an email'. I stated that that was not good enough and that I'd be forced to complain about my experience unless they were able to help me actually fix the situation, at which point they hung up!

I have a lot of gardening work to do and they easily could have made a lot more money off of me if they'd been able to do the absolute bare minimum. If I were the business owner I'd want to re-train my support staff as they are actively hurting the business.

Dear Erin,
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, and I'm sorry that your experience with us fell short of what you expected. I can understand how frustrating it must have been to receive shorter notice than you'd hoped for and then find your plants had been left in your neighbour's garden rather than your own property.
I've looked into your order personally, and I wanted to share what I found whilst also acknowledging where things didn't work as you expected.
Our records show that on 8th December, both an email and SMS were sent to you confirming delivery for Wednesday 10th December. On the morning of delivery, a tracking link was sent at 6:52am advising that the driver would arrive within approximately 30 minutes, and delivery was completed at 7:32am. I'm sorry that you didn't see these notifications—it may be worth checking your spam folder, as delivery emails can sometimes end up there.
Regarding the marketing emails, this is an opt-in / out checkbox at checkout. However, I have now removed you from our mailing list.
Regarding your phone call with our team, I do have to be honest—our staff have the right to end calls where the conversation becomes difficult to continue constructively. We're always happy to help find solutions, but we do ask that our team are spoken to with respect.
I would still like the opportunity to help resolve any outstanding issues. Please do email me directly at paul@grasslands.co.uk if you would like to discuss this further.
Kind regards,
Paul

Healthy looking tree

I ordered a Styrax 'June Snow' from Grasslands. Delivery was slightly delayed but the tree that arrived was in great condition and also a bit bigger than I had been expecting - which is a very good thing! The delivery driver was also kind enough to take it into my garden for me. Haven't planted it out yet but have great hopes.

We bought a bare root hawthorn

We bought a bare root hawthorn. The photos on the website made it look like we were buying a single bunch but it was just a single twig of hawthorn. The sales images were not clear and we paid delivery on something that, if we had known, we would have just picked up in the car. The response from customer service left a lot to be desired. Customer service uninterested in understanding the confusion on their own website and were more inclined to ridicule because we didn't understand that it was one twig and not one bunch. We've bought a lot from grasslands over the past couple of years and this experience has left a sour taste.

Thank you for your feedback, and I'm sorry to hear this experience has left you feeling disappointed—especially as a returning customer.
Bare root whips are sold individually, but I appreciate that if you were expecting a bundle. I'm also sorry that your conversation with our customer service team didn't leave you feeling heard. That's not the experience we want for any customer, and certainly not for someone who has supported us over the years.
As a gesture of goodwill, I'd like to offer you free delivery on your next order with us—whether that's additional hawthorn whips or anything else you need. Just email paul@grasslands.co.uk with your original order number before you place your order and we'll arrange that for you.
Thank you again for taking the time to share your feedback, and I hope we have the opportunity to restore your faith in us.
Kind regards,
Paul

Lovely plants

Lovely plants
We ordered cherry laurels and red robins for a border in our back garden. The plants looked great - and almost two months later they're still looking lovely. Will order from them again.

Very disappointed

Very disappointed, all root stock cut off, damaged branches and lower branches cut off...hardly suitable for hedging...if they will even grow at all, customer care...don't care.

Hi there,

I am really sorry to hear you’re disappointed, and we’d like to clear up a couple of important points about bare-root beech.

Bare-root beech always arrives with pruned roots and lower branches
This is completely normal and actually essential for successful planting. The roots are lightly trimmed when lifted from the field to prevent tearing and to encourage fresh new feeder roots in spring. The lower shoots are also removed as part of standard hedge preparation so the plants knit together into a dense screen once planted. This is how bare-root hedging is produced across the entire industry.

The plants are suitable for hedging and will grow strongly
Beech is one of the most reliable bare-root hedge species. Once planted at the correct spacing and cut back in their first season, they fill out beautifully. The structure you describe is exactly what professional growers expect and look for—it’s not a sign of damage or poor quality.
