Frustrating quote experience

I was unable to renew my insurance. When I tried to renew my policy it had expired and I had to apply for a new quote. This was £200 more than my original renewal quote had been. I was told nothing could be done as it as quote for the day. I have been with this company for many years & was disappointed with response. You cannot speak to anybody for help. My quote wouldn't go through and I was unable to renew. This was due to a highlighted line in the quote that made me think I hadn't put my information in correctly, I eventually realised! It was all VERY FRUSTRATING. Sign of the times I suppose!!!!

Hi Sushy,

Thank you for taking the time to leave this review – we can hear how frustrating this experience was.

We do invite customers to renew from 28 days before the policy end date, which is designed to give plenty of time to review the quote, make changes, and renew without pressure. Once a policy passes its end date and expires, we’re not able to apply the original renewal offer and a new quote has to be generated using prices and risk data for that day. That’s why the figure you then saw was higher – and we appreciate how disappointing that feels, especially after many years with us.

It also sounds like the online journey itself added to the frustration. If something in the quote looked like an error or incomplete information, that should have been clearer and easier to understand. We know how quickly uncertainty like that can derail what should be a simple renewal.

We understand why being told “nothing could be done” felt dismissive – especially when you were trying to sort this out before cover ended.
With motor insurance, once a policy expires it can’t simply be restarted. That’s because of Motor Insurance Database regulations, which require us to ensure vehicles are continuously and accurately insured. If there’s a break in cover, even by a short time, the system treats any new cover as a brand‑new policy, with a new quote based on the risk and pricing available that day. We’re not allowed to backdate cover or re‑apply an expired renewal offer, even when we’d want to help.

Your feedback is appreciated. Even when the outcome can’t be changed, we know clarity, support, and ease really matter – and we’re focused on improving that.

I cancelled my policy 2 weeks before…

I cancelled my policy 2 weeks before the renewal date as I found a much cheaper quote on go compare. I have an email confirming it is cancelled. I have now had an email congratulating me on my renewal. In line with what other customers have said it is impossible to get anywhere with the Ai. I suffer from anxiety so this is really making me ill because I am worrying about it all the time and finding it difficult to sleep. I typed in so many times that I needed to speak to an advisor but the Ai just came back with ludicrous options. I can't believe the incompetence and they have taken the money out of my account.

Unauthorised Renewal, Poor Accessibility, and Unjust Charges

I am leaving this review regarding a deeply frustrating experience with General Accident.

A car insurance policy (Policy No. 802654245) was set up for my mother, a pensioner, with a clear and explicit request that automatic renewal must not be applied. Despite this, the policy was renewed without authorisation.

The policy holder does not use the internet or have access to a computer, yet all communication was forced through an online-only system. We only became aware of the issue after an email was sent to a relative’s account in February stating “welcome to another year.”

We acted immediately:

Wrote formally on 08/03/2026 to confirm the renewal was unauthorised
Followed up again on 09/03/2026 and 10/03/2026
Attempted to resolve the issue through the online portal.

There is no accessible way to speak to a person directly — no phone contact and no direct email support — which made resolving this unnecessarily difficult.

Despite being clearly informed:

The policy was renewed without consent
The policy was then automatically cancelled
We have now been charged £260.85 for a policy that should never have existed

This amount is effectively the same as a full annual premium with the new company, which is completely unreasonable — especially for a pensioner.

This situation feels unfair and mishandled. I have formally disputed the charges and will be escalating the matter to the Financial Ombudsman Service if it is not resolved.

I would strongly urge General Accident to review this case urgently, cancel the charges, and improve accessibility for customers who cannot use online systems.

At present, I cannot recommend this company based on this experience. Insurance compamnies shoudl nto be able to act in this manner.

Hi Stuart,

Thank you for sharing this. We’re sorry to hear how distressing this situation has been for you and your mother, and we understand why you’ve raised serious concerns.

To be clear, policies are only renewed automatically where that option has been selected as a preference. As Trustpilot is a public forum, we’re not able to discuss individual policy details here. However, matters involving renewals, cancellations and charges are reviewed carefully through our formal complaints process, and they’re taken seriously.

We’d like to clarify that we’re an online insurer, and this is made clear at the point the policy is taken out. While this allows us to keep things simple and competitive for many customers, we do recognize the difficulties you’ve highlighted for those who don’t use online services. Your feedback is appreciated, as accessibility is something we continue to review and improve.

For your own protection, we recommend editing your review to remove any personal or policy information that could identify you or the policyholder.
Thank you again for raising this. Feedback like yours is important and helps drive improvements.
