Review summary

Based on reviews, created with AI

Reviewers had a great experience with this company. Customers praise the platform as an ideal and easy way to learn piano, especially for adults and beginners, appreciating the clear, helpful lessons and the ability to learn at their own pace. Many highlight features like separate hand practice, wait mode, and video above sheet music as particularly useful. The extensive and varied song library, along with the clean, instructive interface, contributes to a fun and inspiring learning experience for many. However, some people were dissatisfied with the app's recognition of notes, occasionally freezing or not registering correct keys. There were also mentions of the song library feeling stale, with a desire for more popular, recent, or specific genres of music, and some songs disappearing. A few customers found the subscription price to be expensive, questioning its value and expressing concerns about limited functionality or issues with family sharing and accessing subscribed content.

Worth subscribing. High quality interface.

I’m enjoying Flowkey and it’s worth subscribing. Its strengths are the neat presentation of the interface, the clarity of the scores (helpful if your eyesight isn’t great) and that many songs and pieces have multiple levels of difficulty to work through. I like being able to see the video of the hands playing the piece too. If there’s one area that could be improved it would be to have some guidance of fingering position within the score with some numbers as I often have to slow down and repeat a section of the video to figure out what the videoed hands are doing.

Only been on the app for about a week…

Only been on the app for about a week now and managed to get the IPAD set up with my Yamaha keyboard. Well impressed in the early stages of the basics as a beginner and have managed to play Ode to joy. The stages of playing the keys with the assistance of the step by step procedure was easy to follow and gave me a lot of inspiration going forward. Early days but really pleased with flowkey.

This is such a brilliant creation! Proper lessons but at your own speed. Loads of varied different music and able to use it over all devices. I had the free trial from Yamaha and have now signed up for annual membership

Expensive and boring. I won’t renew…

I am finding it far more interesting and logical to use free YouTube videos that focus on chords and have you playing and sounding good in a matter of moments. The songs available on this app are varied but, in the main, boring. I have no interest in classical music and what I am left with is bland. Should be more 4 chord beginners songs that get the excitement. The rest can be worked on later. Reading music is so boring, but I am already creating my own sounds just be learning piano chords and playing with them.

Thanks for sharing your honest thoughts and taking the time to explain what works for you.
I can see the appeal of chord-focused playing and that quick feeling of making music right away. It’s helpful to hear what motivates you at the piano and where flowkey doesn’t quite match yet what you’re looking for right now.

I’m so happy I made this important step to learn to play piano

I took piano lessons on and off during my life but never really learned properly and was unable to sit down at a piano and play music. Now I’m 70+ years old, I have the time and desire, and Flowkey seems to be the perfect teacher. The lessons are progressive and enable me to learn simple music at first, and then I’m learning to play with my right hand and left hand, something I’ve really never done. It is the most fun! And the Flowkey customer service is extraordinary. I was having issues connecting my iPad with my piano keyboard, and they patiently answered every email that I sent until everything was just working together beautifully. It’s good for my soul and it’s good for my brain. And I’m having the best time ever!

I'm a beginner and Flowkey suits me perfectly

I'm a beginner (or haven't played in 50 years) and find Flowkey to be a perfect way of learning for me. I love the wide selection of tunes - everything from John Legend through the White Stripes to Beethoven.
My keyboard has no data-out, so I find it helps to plug in an external mic to my imac to help note recognition. Without it, Flowkey can struggle to recognise some notes/chords.

Love learning piano with Flowkey (75 years old)

After working with Piano Marvel and Playground Sessions I found it a relieve to work with Flowkey. No more stress during the exercises to score. The Wait option where the sheet music pauses till you hit the right key is a perfect training option. The only thing is that you have to watch your timing yourself. I am learning for my own fun so small timing issues are not really a problem for me and can be trained separately.
The theory is sufficient to learn to play the songs. So I can recommend this piano learning app to everyone.

It is an excellent experience

It is an excellent experience. I like the music and the courses and the keyboard. In short, I like everything. Only, the starting courses are pretty complicated. Later on, it is more educational, in particular in how to put your hands and move them over the keyboard.

The site is great and easy to use

The site is great and easy to use. I did have a problem getting on the app but the support people helped sort it as there is a clutch when you want to reset your password as it wants you to open a new app. The only other issue I have is sometimes when you play a tune you play the correct notes but the app keeps telling you it’s wrong.on 2 songs it did a lot which was off putting but overall experience is very positive.

Excellent motivational app and song…

Excellent motivational app and song selection. A downside is that fingerings and articulation are missing in some pieces. Note recognition is good overall, but chord detection can be inconsistent. I’m hopeful the team will continue to refine it.

Great for learning

I wanted to play for fun and be able to not only see the musical notes but the positioning of the finger on the piano. Flowkey is great for that. It let's you learn at the speed you desire. I typically use the "wait" mode with both hands as I'm a beginner. It has great classical pieces, but I wish it had other rhythms. I'm particularly interested in learning salsa beats, montuno, etc. The app does not have that.

Thanks for sharing this. I understand how important it is that the app reliably shows the keys being played. If it’s not always responding as expected, I’d recommend getting in touch with support directly (support@flowkey.com or via in-app messenger).
In many cases, it already helps to restart your device. So you might want to try that first.

Good

The app doesn't work unless you have a newer Android which made the whole thing a mess, I was lucky that my old phone had it and I'm using it on there, otherwise I would have to have bought a new device. The app is quite good for learning although I'd add some "easy" parts at first in the training courses, for true beginners. I suppose once you have a higher level of piano playing it's a lot more complete than other apps, that's why I got it, but I was still a bit new I guess. I'm doing my best.
