Mr Simcock and his staff were friendly…
Mr Simcock and his staff were friendly and informative. I had an excellent result to both my cataract operations with 20/20 vision in both eyes. I would not hesitate to recommend them.
Excellent friendly staff
Excellent friendly staff, very good result from my cataract surgery to both eyes. I would thoroughly recommend them.
Cataract and YAG Laser treatments
Peter Simcock has performed procedures on my eyes twice, and each time he has been very informative before and after the treatments. His manner is friendly, reassuring and extremely professional.
Fantastic result and service
I cannot praise the surgeon (Peter Simcock) and his team enough for the fantastic result from treatment to both of my eyes.
Given long term existing complications with them (for over 60 years), he suggested and within two months, treated my cataracts implanting a Toric lens for one eye and standard for the other. From being very close to failing a sight test, I now see things I have not seen clearly for 60 years.
I have, literally, been given a new life.
From start to finish service, procedure and results have been exceptional and I only wish I had met this brilliant surgeon years ago
Kind, calm and efficient
I have what amounts to PTSD concerning all things medical and I was really dreading having to have both cataracts done. From the moment I walked through the door, everything and everybody were calm and efficient and Mr Simcock and his staff were incredibly kind and understanding. I was, and am, extremely grateful, and would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Exeter Eye to anybody.
Excellent Clinic and Staff.
Like most people I was quite apprehensive of having cataract surgery which was required on both eyes. But by good fortune the procedures were undertaken at Exeter Eye by surgeon Miss Von Lany.
Both the surgeon and all the clinical and administrative staff at this clinic were superb. From the first assessment, the procedures to the last review, I was treated with compassion, courtesy and respect and given all the information to make these treatments stress free as possible for the patient. I particularly appreciated that Miss Von Lany telephoned me the morning after each operation to check that all was well and answer my queries. I would not hesitate to be a patient at this clinic again
Excellent service received for cataract…
Excellent service received for cataract surgery. Can highly recommend this courteous and efficient service and first class results.
Cataract surgery
I have had toric lens replacement in both eyes, arranged by Exeter Eye, my consultant surgeon was Harry Roberts.
Mr Roberts` secretary, Sally was patient, caring and efficient. The reception staff could not have made me feel more welcome and supplied drinks as required.
Mr Roberts` explanation of alternative lenses was first class which helped me to make the choice of lens which were the most suitable for me. His understanding of my situation and accommodation of my needs was excellent.
Mr Roberts` you are recommended by this satisfied patient.
Expected much better
I have already addressed my issue with Exeter Eye and was not surprised to get an uncaring response from them. I had decided to take the private route expecting excellent treatment and to get my surgery dealt with as quickly as I could. My cataracts were dense and I was losing my sight so time was not on my side.
I made an appointment and was advised not to arrive more than ten minutes before. I complied with this. My partner had taken the day off work to come with me as I couldn’t see well enough and had given up driving.
When we arrived we were met by a nurse in scrubs bringing out the recycling…this wasn’t what I expected my first impression to be. I checked in with the receptionist who spent most of the time humming and singing at her desk. The waiting area looked untidy - including a pile of toilet rolls on the floor in the corner. We waited forty minutes. I said to my partner that probably Dr Roberts was being thorough with the previous patient and that his tardiness could be a good sign.
I didn’t mind waiting to get the treatment I needed. This was an expensive (in my opinion) pre assessment with very expensive surgery to both eyes to follow.
The surgeon was now over thirty minutes late - which was okay but in the whole time we were there, not one person apologised for the wait or asked if I was okay…as it was, I was already a little nervous. We were not even offered a cup of tea.
I eventually gave up and we left. I thought the service was very shabby considering my total cost was going to be around eight thousand pounds.
I later complained and had a very unsatisfactory response but I wasn’t actually surprised at this.
I have since had my surgery completed on the NHS and the treatment I had was second to none. Exeter Eye is not recommended by me.

Learning Disability
If you are a carer for a person with a learning disability please do not go near this clinic. I explained my son's clinical diagnosis (nonspeaking autism and epilepsy) to the receptionist, to which she replied 'what's wrong with him?'. I was so shocked I couldn't respond but she then clarified what she meant by saying 'what's his eye diagnosis'. I explained he has cataracts in both eyes. She went away to speak with the practice manager and returned saying she didn't think anyone would be able to help. I asked if anyone had previous experience of treating someone with a learning disability and she said 'No-I don't think so' and then proceeded to lecture me on how I would need to get a Power of Attorney to make decisions etc. I said I felt she was entirely unempathic and that I would probably be better going to Moorfields Eye Hospital in London (a 400 mile round trip) where they appeared to accommodate my sons' challenges. She agreed. I think some training in Diversity and Inclusion may be appropriate.

Whats is lens replacement really like?
My long vision was perfect, but I was finding it really difficult to read a menu. Yes I am that vain! My close up vision started to blur at about 15 feet and obviously got worse the closer I got to anything. I had long since given up looking at my phone or working on my computer without glasses. So five years ago, I decided to only have one lens replaced. I think the reason for this is, a few years earlier, I had had corrective laser work done on one eye, to improve my reading by an Eye Specialist in Harley St, London, who had great reviews etc. Unbelievably they did the wrong eye and it didn’t work. They gave me a full refund. So I was very nervous of a second attempt. Mr Quinn advised me that achieving the perfect vision of a 10 year old isn’t possible at 65 and he also didn’t recommend my choice of only one lens replacement, but he did it for me. It was done professionally, without drama. The result was near perfect vision in the one eye. I now had focus from about 4 feet to infinity. My brain mixed the eyes together and I could now read menus, the paper, and my phone for short casual time. I still needed reading glasses if I was going to read for hours. Your human lens go yellow with age. The replacement was clear. I didn’t realise I was permanently seeing everything with a tint of yellow until I could switch between eyes. As I winked between eyes the room slightly changed from yellowish to brighter colours. Five years on and my replacement lens is the same, but my human lens has naturally deteriorated and now had a close focal length of 20+ feet. So I arranged for Mr Quinn to replace the other lens. It was decided to put in a slightly different focal length lens. It focuses slightly closer than the earlier one, but at a slight loss at infinity, but my brain mixes them together. Now my close up focal length had been reduced to shorter than the original lens. Now I shave without glasses, because I can clearly see the individual hairs on my face, which took time to get use to. Reading is fine. If am going to watch a movie on my phone, I can, but after awhile I prefer to wear a pair of cheap reading glasses. If I look to infinity, the moon is in perfect focus. I have done Harley Street, so I have some basis to say the crew at Exeter Eye solidly know what they are doing. I would recommend lens replacement and I would recommend Mr Quinn at Exeter Eye to do it. I am sure the other surgeons there are as equally good.
Nothing to worry About! A transformation!
Everything went so smoothly from an efficiently run organisation for pre op and post op appointments to the care and thoroughness and expertise displayed by Mr Quinn and his team. Everyone was so helpful and everything was explained in a straightforward manner including the various options for treatment.
I was a little apprehensive about having eye surgery for cataract removal for both eyes but was unwilling to wait the almost 2 years quoted for an NHS procedure. After a referral from my Opticians I was seen by the Consultant Mr Quinn who carried out both operations.
He explained everything very carefully and allayed my concerns. He and his team were very professional in going through the various options for the type of lenses to be fitted and after the first dominant eye was treated I experienced a miraculous improvement with distance vision enabling me to drive without glasses for the first time.
A couple of weeks later I had the other eye treated to provide improved arms length vision to achieve an overall balanced vision in both eyes.
Whilst I will still need glasses for some reading, in every other respect my vision is excellent and the improvement has definitely contributed to a better quality of life enabling me to better enjoy the things I love from walking to taking up some sports which I'd thought were now beyond me. The overall boost it has given me has been tremendous. My only regret is that I wish'd I not left it so long to get my eyes fixed.
SoO if anyone is worried about having cataracts removed and lenses fitted - don't be - Certainly from my experience you have everything to gain and nothing to lose.
Professional And Dedicated
In September 2022 i was diagnosed with a cataract in my right eye. As there was a 2 year waiting list on the NHS i decided to go private and was advised to see Mr. Anthony Quinn at Exeter Eye. After being contacted by Jo, Mr. Quinn's secretary i presented myself at Exeter Eye and was met by a very efficient nurse called Chantelle. She carried out numerous eye checks and introduced me to Dr. Quinn. I informed him i had suffered from anterior uveitis (iritis) for the past 49 years which could be the cause of the cataract. Upon investigation Mr. Quinn discovered slight inflammation in my right eye caused by iritis. Instead of telling me to get it sorted out with my own GP Mr. Quinn took me under his wing and firstly arranged for me to have blood tests as iritis can be caused by a rogue gene, arthritis, spondylitis and many other ailments. All tests came back negative so Mr. Quinn arranged for me to see an iritis consultant at Torbay Hospital who soon sorted the problem. April 6th i presented myself at Exeter Eye where i was given prednisolone intravenously and in tablet form in case the iritis came back post operation. The cataract operation went perfectly with no problems. I was not asked to pay for this medicine. One week after the operation i saw Mr. Quinn who said the pressure in the right eye was raised so gave me tablets to reduce it. I then returned regularly to see Mr. Quinn so that he could monitor progress. I actually had 8 post operation consultations which did not cost me a single penny.
Where else in 2023 can you get service like this? Mr. Quinn, Jo and Chantelle and everyone at Exeter Eye are so professional and dedicated. I have already recommended them to friends who are considering cataract surgery.
Everyone at Exeter Eye is a credit to the medical profession.
An excellent and life changing experience

Every person on staff where so nice and made my experience very comfortable, I had no anxiety at all everything went so well . I see things much clearly now and will have no problem with my next appointment for my procedure for my left eye thank you so much for your care
A fantastic experience
From the first consultation assessment for cataract operations on both eyes to last post op check up. The whole experience was fantastic, all staff whether they were doctors, nurses and admin stasis was polite, respectful and pleasant. I whole heartedly recommend Exeter Eye to anyone who needs cataract surgery. A special “thank you” to Peter Simcock who did my eye surgery.
Cataract operations
Even though I had reached the stage of not being able to drive safely at dusk or once the street lights came on, I was reluctant to have cataract operations. Partly, I have to admit, because the idea of someone poking around in my eye with a sharp knife was not appealing. Fortunately, I already knew Mr Michael Smith who was my glaucoma consultant and in whom I had great trust. Following a thorough eye examination at Exeter Eye, Mr Smith answered all my questions and reservations clearly and in detail. This persuaded me that now was the time to have the operation and this was the man to do it. This proved to be a good decision. Not only because the result was far better than I had expected but also because I was able to relax throughout the whole procedure confident that I was in good hands. I was also impressed by the post-op procedures at Exeter Eye. Detailed eye tests and clear descriptions of the results and what I should (and should not) do next. Would I recommend Mr Smith to anyone who was contemplating having a cataract operation? For me, it’s all about patient-consultant trust. If you have it, as I did, then it takes away the stress associated during and immediately prior to the operation. I would certainly recommend making an appointment with Mr Smith.
I had cataract replacement lens surgery…
I had cataract replacement lens surgery for both eyes in March/April 2022 with Mr Quinn and his great team. The difference in vision was incredibly good, the treatment was excellent, and I was made to feel very comfortable and reassured with the whole process. Post-surgery there was very little discomfort - just 'gritty' eye for a few hours. It was certainly an easier experience than vesting the dentist!
