Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 65 reviews, most reviewers were unhappy with their experience overall. Many customers reported extremely poor service, encountering issues with booking processes, unexpected fees, and difficulties with payments. People frequently mentioned being charged extra for services that were supposed to be included or were not clearly communicated, such as additional insurance or out-of-hours fees. The staff was often described as rude, unhelpful, and unprofessional, leading to frustrating interactions and unresolved problems. Customers also faced significant problems with car availability, receiving different or lower-class vehicles than booked, and being denied rentals due to payment card issues despite prior confirmations. Conversely, a small portion of people felt satisfied with their experience, praising reasonable prices, efficient collection and return processes, and helpful staff.

Caution

Caution! If you order through the Bookinig website, they keep the car for you for only 30 minutes! If the flight is delayed like most flights, your order will be canceled Even if you specified the flight number and you will pay all the money without the possibility of a refund! Unfortunately I fell and had to pay twice for the same vehicle. They claim that they rented the car I ordered to someone else but if you want to pay again suddenly they have a car to give you. You should be careful not to do business with such a company that steals its customers. You pay and even though you paid, they take your car and rent it to you again. They claim that you did not pay them, you paid the Booking website, but Booking claims that they paid Europcar and that is the rules of the rental company. Be careful not to rent a car from such a company! You pay and get nothing in return! If it only happened to me then I wouldn't write about it but it's a method they do it to everyone. I fell, I hope you don't fall too.

I don't think I will choose Europcar again.

As I see: Forced upselling by the staff of this office and / or Incomplete and incorrect communication by Europcar.

I booked a car with them but didn't request the premium insurance because Rentalcovers provides such coverage at a much more favourable price and with proper service. Regarding the reserved rental, Europcar informed me about what I need to bring to pick up the car, including the requirement for a debit or credit card. However, when I tried to pick up the car, the local team only accepted a credit card because, according to their claim, they couldn't place a deposit on a debit card. As a solution, they offered me to purchase full insurance. (How do these two topics relate?) Since we had no other choice, as we planned our vacation around this car, we relied on this for our trip. Interestingly, out of necessity, I had to accept the additional cost, and at that moment, the debit card became suitable for placing the deposit. How does this work? Of course, I also made a mistake... in the terms and conditions (which they didn't send), it states that only a credit card is acceptable... but this contradicts what they sent via email.
I gave the same feedback on Google, and they also replied. Since I would like give a fully transparent overview, and would like to spare some time for Europcar team as well, I copy their feedback here:
"The agency charging you insurance for not having a credit card is due to the the concept of protection the credit card provides to companies. With out credit card if you refuse to pay for braking the agreement then the debit card hold no value over how the company covers the expenses the customers creates. The terms and conditions in renal cards are available to be read at any moment during the booking process, you neglecting to verify what is acceptable and what is not has nothing to do with the services Europcar provides in Greece.
Thank you for understanding.
With regards,
Europcar Greece Athens City Team"

Based on the company's response, I would like to add to what I wrote: On one hand, they should examine whether their communication with customers is consistent, fair, and transparent (they communicated differently in the email than what was expected on-site). On the other hand, I would highlight that after enforcing the insurance, the debit card suddenly became suitable for applying the coverage, which still seems quite strange to me. Additionally, we offered several options for the deposit on-site: we could transfer it on the spot, hand it over in cash, or even use the Revolut card, but of course, that was also not accepted.

Very helpful desk service

After an extremely delayed flight from the UK I arrived at the Athens airport desk quite late in the evening. Nikos, who was manning the desk, was extremely kind and helpful. Not only did he quickly sort out my car rental but he also gave me accurate and useful advice regarding a previous hire with Europcar and return of my deposit. He sent an e-mail to the head office to ensure my case was actioned, which it subsequently was within two days. Thank you Niko for a very efficient and helpful service.

Having pre booked and paid for our Hire…

Having pre booked and paid for our Hire Car before our departure from the uk. I assumed that all was done and dusted, we arrived in Kefalonia Airport at approximately
10.30 pm. When we went to pick up our Rental Car we were told that because this was out of hours we would incur an additional 60 euro charge. Bearing in mind that
having been to Kefalonia on many occasions , we have never had to pay any extra charges on a Hire Car.
Europcar were aware weeks before of our arrival times and flight numbers, I feel that this was unjustified, and a total rip-off .
I will never use EUROPCAR again. BEWARE.

Avoid them

Avoid them - to put it briefly. Incompetent and rude, and primarily focused on coaxing more money out of you. This is how I experienced Eurocard at the airport in Athens.
It started with the usual story that unfortunately they didn't have the car we ordered, but of course we got a better one. Of course we didn't get that.
Next, I was charged an extra fee because I'm over 75. I asked for documentation, but I couldn't get it. I could pay Euro 210.80 extra or drop the deal. Of course I couldn't, as the car was already paid for. I referred to the contract, but the employee didn't care.
He then claimed that the car was not rented through Eurocar, and therefore not covered by the insurance on my credit card. Of course it was rented through Eurocard directly, and of course he couldn't know what insurance I have.
Meanwhile the queue grew, so he ended up getting his way and we paid to move on.
Naturally, he did not want to give his name, and all subsequent inquiries to the main office have gone unanswered.
Never again Eurcard!

False promises

We arrived in the afternoon, with luggage and my mentally handicapped child in a wheelchair because of a broken leg.
I had called in advance to make sure that it would be possible to upgrade to a car that could hold both wheelchair and luggage. When I called I was told that we would look at it together, and the upgrade would be made at the spot based on what we needed.
When we arrived, there was no attempt to actually solve the problem. I was just upgraded to a more expensive car, which had more room for luggage than my original hire, but left us with several cases of luggage in the cabin.
The staff insisted that there were no better solutions, so we just had to accept it.
When I had called in advance I had asked for a sedan or a station wagon. It turned out that they had neither in the fleet. If they had told me in advance, or if they had even told me at check-in, I could have cut my losses and tried for another solution at another company. But when it became apparent we had already spent more than 1½ hour on the process and my child would not have been able to take more delays.
On top of this, they charged me full price for an upgrade that did not solve my problem satisfactorily, and on top of that they did not accept the credit card the reservation had been made with (this is on the central office, not the local office) and landed me with an extra unnecessary insurance fee.
When I got home, I complained to Europcar about the terrible service - and got no answer. I waited two weeks, and then complained about not receiving an answer on my complaint. Then finally, I got an answer which stated that I had not followed correct procedure for changing my booking, so the fault was mine, not theirs.
In the future I will follow the correct procedure, which clearly is choosing another company.

Friendly and efficient service

Everything about the service we received from Europcar at Aktion Airport was first class. The staff at the Europcar desk in the airport were friendly, polite, and efficient. The car was exactly what we wanted and was smart and clean. Faultless for the 5 weeks of our hire period. The return at the end of our hire period was easy, and again friendly and efficient. We look forward to our next trip in September and will not hesitate to use Europcar again and are happy to recommend them.
(PS. We have also rented cars from Europcar in Thessalonika who provide the same level of service)

Monkey business at its best

Monkey business at its best. They try to exploit every possible opportunity to make profit, plus some of the personnel are not professional and fit for the job. Make sure you have travel insurance or pay with credit card because it is very likely that you will need it.

Friendly & Efficient Service

Friendly team and great car. Shuttle from airport to the office (less than 5 mins) - staff were friendly and even allowed us to choose which car (bonus of less busy hire period). Car was scuffed already but ample checks were made by us and the team before handover.

Easy & quick return process and transfer back to airport. They will ask about insurance, but they weren't pushy as we had our own. Provided a little map of the island too which was super handy!

Scammed by Europcar personnel

Check back was a disaster as was scammed by the Europcar personnel who added a small fee without telling me after I had checked back the car.
I realise someone else had been scammed when they returned their car too. This is fraud.

What a professional but friendly service! We were met at the airport and directed to their office a short walk away. Car and paperwork was ready and we were soon on our way. On return, again they were ready for us which is a blessing when you're concerned about catching a flight. The car
was quickly checked over and there were no issues. Very pleased with the service and would definitely use again.

Absolute liars

Absolute liars. There are tons of other options on this road so I would suggest you try one of them instead.

I have previously hired cars with Drivalia and Budget and never had such problems of misrepresentation.

On picking up the vehicle from Europcar I specifically asked about the level of damage waiver that I had. I was told that I had the premium package so would pay nothing for damage, save for a 30-odd euro admin fee. I repeated this back to the member of staff who confirmed this again. My friends were there and all heard it.

On returning the vehicle (to the airport office), there was a small scratch on the front. I was then told that I did not in fact have the level of cover that had previously been represented to me and I would have to pay 350-odd euros. (This is completely disproportionate to fact that it requires a simple paint job.)

I have since been in email correspondence with Europcar who tell me that they have investigated with the members of staff who dealt with me. They also say that their procedure is to offer the premium package but that is not what I had. This means that someone in Europcar is flat out lying. Either the person who dealt with me or the person who is emailing me.

I have never had this before. When Drivalia and Budget told me the level of cover, they did not then go back on it. Clearly the person who dealt with me was wrong and should have either included the premium cover on my written rental agreement, but he did not - or he should have offered it rather than telling me I already had it, but he did not.

Absolute scam.
