Review summary

Based on reviews, created with AI

Most reviewers were unhappy with their experience overall. Many customers expressed dissatisfaction with the product quality, citing issues such as torn covers, missing dust jackets, and extensive markings in books advertised as "good" or "new" condition. Reviewers also frequently encountered problems with their orders, including receiving incorrect editions, damaged items, or only partial shipments. A significant number of people were particularly frustrated with the refund process, reporting that their requests were ignored or denied, even with proof of damage. Additionally, many felt that the pricing was misleading, as they paid premium prices for items that were clearly not as described or were available for much less elsewhere.

Very Happy Customer.

I had a great experience with ergodebooks. My order was international from USA to Australia. My product was very reasonably priced, and arrived within 24 hours of the expected delivery date. It was very well packaged, and delivered to my doorstep. I was continually updated with emails regarding my purchase, and the expected delivery time, reassuring me my product was on the way and should arrive on or close to the estimated delivery date. I cannot fault ergodebooks, and would not hesitate to purchase from them again, and hope I have to opportunity to do so. Thanks ergodebooks for the wonderful service.

Very poor - do not use

I ordered a book from Ergodebooks 7 weeks ago and still have not received it even though the expected delivery date (6 weeks from placing the order) has passed. They did refund me after a few emails back and forth with them maintaining they had dispatched the book the day after I’d ordered it, even though the tracking didn’t move from ‘Dispatched’ to ‘In transit’ status in 7 weeks.

I ended up ordering the same book from World of Books and it arrived within 2 days. I would not recommend Ergodebooks or their related companies at all - do not use if you actually want to get the book you’ve ordered.

I'm so pleased I read the Trustpilot…

I'm so pleased I read the Trustpilot negative reviews. I noted all their books were £71 - very expensive. I looked up their land address and on Google maps, it looked a bit strange. I was scammed the other week by another 'shop' that took my money and didn't deliver. Tip: type in the business name and 'review'.

CON ARTISTS. Don't even consider trusting these…

Don't even consider trusting these shysters with your cash. I hadn't read the Trustpilot reviews before placing my order, naively thinking that anything connected with ebay would be kosher, big mistake! I won't bore you with the details as I can afford to lose twenty quid as a one-off sting but, just in case you were considering spending a reasonable amount, steer well clear of Ergodebooks...their reviews are terrible for a reason.

Fraud company

I purchased a $60 out of print book from Ergodebooks through Amazon. It arrived damaged with no bubble wrap or even paper in the box to protect it. When I sent pictures to Amazon they refused to help me unless I went through the seller first. I asked for a replacement and Ergodebooks was being extremely dodgy and avoiding all my questions about a replacement. After 8 weeks of stress I filed a refund claim with Amazon and immediately Ergodebooks emailed me and asked me to remove my claim for a 40% refund. I was so close to accepting because they kept guilting me and talking about how their business is their livelihood until I got on here and saw all the reviews. Boycott them.

Edit: I filed a claim with Amazon and got a full refund that came out of ErgodeBook's pocket. Now they keep emailing me demanding I send the damaged book back to them (when Amazon said I can keep it!) no doubt so they can scam someone else with it. If you got scammed by them through Amazon file a claim and get your money back. Don't let these fraudsters get away with it.

REFUND RECEIVED (I received only one of a two volume…)

UPDATE: I have updated my stars from 1 to 4. I persisted to email. They again went through. I was offered 40% refund and to keep the book. I declined as I could not use book 2 without book 1. I was then given a full refund. Customer service was good at the beginning and good at the end. It appears there was a customer service glitch in the middle of my issue.
1st REVIEW:
I received only one of a two volume set. My phone call was never returned. I was told by email they were looking into this issue. Now the email address we have been communicating with can no longer have mail delivered to it. Emails are now undeliverable!

Scammed by them on Abebooks

I bought a book from them on Abebooks one month ago. They provided a USPS tracking number, which had no movement (comes from a third party shipper). After some days I contacted them, they always answered nicely and in a couple of hours. They said at first that they would refund me, but if I could maybe accept another book of the same price range, since $11 was a big loss for them. One week later I asked for a refund and they literally stopped answering me. Ghosted like a teenager. This is obviously a scam company, do NOT buy anything from them.

Suspicious 'Automated' Shipping + Impossible to Talk to

I ordered an overpriced book from them on Amazon.ca. An hour and a half later in the evening (EST), I decided it was needlessly expensive so I cancelled the order through Amazon. They sent me an automated message that had nothing to do with the cancel request stating that "We would like to inform you that we are closely monitoring your order along with the developments of corona virus (COVID-19)".
I sent another cancellation request and this time they informed me that their shipping was automated and it was too late. I complained to Amazon and they agreed with me that Ergodebooks should at least cover the return shipping as their behaviour did not seem straight forward (ignoring the first cancel request).
After adding a suspicious restocking fee (15% of the book's price to put it back in its place), their automated staff insisted that I should pay shipping. At my wits end, I was about acquiesce and pay shipping and restocking until I stumbled upon reviews on this site which coincided with my own humble experience. I took it up with Amazon and they refunded me the full price including shipping and told me to do with the book as I pleased. For this reason I highly discourage doing business with Ergodebooks. That being said, I did order a book from them previously and it is still late. Therefore, ordering from them is a gamble. If you end up having to deal with them, it is a real hassle.

Edit: The book that I ordered previously still hasn't arrived. I confused it with another order.

Fraudulent practices abetted by ABE Books

Like others here, I placed an order with Ergodebooks though ABE. I should have checked Trustpilot first, because this company appears to list everything they sell as 'new' without regard to actual condition, charging premium prices for books that would be worth the money if actually as advertised. The book I received as 'new' had a tattered dust jacket, and as other reviewers here have noted, Ergodebooks offered nothing but a partial refund. ABE is abetting this behavior by ignoring complaints and insisting on defrauded purchasers returning misrepresented purchases for refunds that other Trustpilot reviewers claim never to have received. Ergodebooks are fraudsters, and ABE is making it possible for them to do it. I won't deal with either of them again.

Customer from Canada

Customer from Canada -- at least, I wish I had been a customer. Despite the negative reviews found on this website, I ordered a Box Set (6 volumes) from this company, as I would have paid around $50 less than locally, even with the exchange rate.

Before placing my order, I contacted the company to enquire about shipping costs and the carrier they would be using, as some may charge duties, and others not. "Steve L" replied to my email and said "You will get the exact charges while placing the order." Allright, this was not a complete answer, but it was an answer nonetheless.

So I decided to place my order. I paid with PayPal to benefit from Buyer Protection in case something went wrong.

My order remained with a "Pending" status for 6 days, after which I received a refund on my PayPal account. I received no explanation from the company. I contacted them, but didn't receive an answer. Maybe they realized that shipping costs should have been greater? Still, an explanation would have been appreciated.

Because of the exchange rate, I lost a few dollars -- and time -- in the process.

So, yet another bad review for this company.

A bunch of chancers

I ordered an out of print book costing over £40 via eBay. Ergodebooks notified me of dispatch then a few days later e-mailed to say they had cancelled the order and spun me some nonsense about customs having to validate my address (eh?). I did eventually get a refund but it was no surprise to see the book back on eBay priced at more than three times what I had paid.

Edit on 18/06/21: The negative feedback I left for them on eBay has been removed. No wonder there is such a discrepancy between their 98% positive feedback on eBay and the 80% negative reviews on this site.

Just like everyone else on here

Just like everyone else on here, ordered a hard to find book that was listed as new. A total piece of tattered, used crap showed up. The booksellers requested photos documenting the damage which I sent them. They then sent me a return shipping label. I returned the book and never got a refund! They flat out STOLE the money from me. I bought it through ABE and paid via Pay Pal. Nice scam they have going. Total scumbag swindlers. I will be contacting the Attorney General in their state.

Misrepresented book condition

Unfortunately, we received our "NEW" book - it's binding is torn in three places, a page is loose, pen scribble is on a page, and stains are on both the front and back cover - far from the 'NEW" description.

Misrepresent condition of book, and then don't offer equitable resolution

Ordered a book from Ergodebooks through Abebooks. The book was listed as "new" but came with writing in it. Ergodebooks offered me a 15% discount which meant the price was still above others that were offering the book in "very good" condition. Customer service said they only make 25% per book and they don't see the book, so they can't say what the condition is. When i said their resolution was not satisfactory, they stopped communicating with me. Too bad the cost to return the book doesn't make it worthwhile to return it!
