I attended the Convention of Thorns

I attended the Convention of Thorns, a three night live role playing game, in Poland. This was based on the fictional World of Darkness history and the game Vampire the Masquerade.
I very much enjoyed my experience. The costuming was great and the whole cast and crew co-operated to make the whole thing run smoothly and ensure that no one was left out.

Imperfect but Very Magical

My experience at College of Wizardry was nothing short of magical.
There were some frustrations that they haven't expressed interest in addressing, but I still recommend the experience for anyone interested.

These people are professionals

These people are professionals. With LARP, you are opening yourself to a lot of different experiences. From the first LARP I did with Dziobak, CoW 3, through subsequent ones, I always felt the organisation and background control was excellent.

I participated with Dziobak LARP Study in COW: 10

I participated with Dziobak LARP Study in COW: 10 at Czocha School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
My experience has been wonderful, it was the first LARP I was facing and the atmosphere couldn't be more real and engaging, I could really feel that it was part of a magic school with its student atmosphere and problems of that age. The castle of Czocha is an unequaled environment for this type of experience, but it is mainly the people who have turned this event into something magical for me.
I will never forget the time I spent in that castle or the people who made it possible. Thank you so much for filling my life with MAGIC.

Love the CoW Larps BUT:

I would love to rate higher but for some reasons I decided to take away 2 stars, I'll try to explain.

The only Larp experience from dziobak studios I have so far, are the CoW Larps. The first two runs I participated where wonderful and I'd give 4 stars for them, just - 1 because of the overbooking in CoW 4, my room was crowded with too many people (11 people and one bathroom is just not nice) and because there was too little food.

But in my opinion the quality suffered a great deal when new projects where started. While the price got higher, for reasons I understand, the quality didn't improve, quite the opposite to be honest.

I had the feeling that the same mistakes were done over and over again. E.g requested scenes, probs, npc's in advance. Either there was no feedback on the request or it was still not arranged on spot, despite several attempts of mine to remind, organize or communicate about it.

Furthermore there are positions in CoW which are far more organizational than larping itself. So far I can only talk about being prefect. This role is incredibly exhausting, takes a great deal of pre-work and organizing and during the game you have very little time to actually play your character because you have your house to manage, juniors to sort, ritual to prepare etc. This is a task that is hard, demanding and time consuming. I would really wish that someone who practically co-runs the event, should be granted a discounted ticket. But that's just my personal opinion about it.

The other thing that made me feel conflicted lately is the feeling that the castings for characters and positions got biased more and more, to a degree where one player seemed to be able to decide who would hold which position in one of the Larps - a power I don't wish any player to have. I want to emphasize that this is what I heard from players of the very same run, from different sides. So at one point I felt frustrated to a point where I wondered about the reasons and decided not to join the run.

I absolutely understand that mistakes happen, that there will always be some stuff people will complain about. The Reason why I bring this forward is not because I dislike the Larp or dziobak. I have a great amount of respect for them and I love CoW! But with a pricetag and a price policy like the current one, I simply think that this is no way to go into the future.

When advertising yourself as professionals, I expect exactly that. And I do hope that Dziobak will improve and keep on going the magic they already do. Despite the complaints I made, it is still a wonderful experience I wouldn't want to miss.

The CoW Larps are wonderful, there is so much love into them, so much effort both by organizers but also extremely from the players side. Dziobak goes the extra mile to help you manage to participate, they are supportive and they take your personal situation into account if you reach out to them, which I value a great deal. What they do is extraordinary and this is why I want it to be as good as it can be.

Reply from Dziobak Larp Studios

Hi Voldemaart,

Thank you so much for this review :)

- We appreciate a lot that you've taken your time to give Dziobak some honest feedback.

As a business, we also need to constantly improve the experience for our larpers and by leaving this review, you've contributed to achieve that goal.

We are soon to host the CoW 15 ( - which means that the elements you are describing, have already been set in place since the CoW4 ) so we sincerely hope that you'll soon decide to come back to the castle to discover the improvements we've done so far since the CoW4.

Sincerely yours.

- Claus

Stepping into one of the worlds of a Dziobak LARP production is an unforgettable experience. Get to play a character in your favourite fiction and meet other people from all over the world, all engaged in adding their piece to the same story. Dive into roleplaying with drama, intrigue, and action or just lean back and watch the others do all the hard work. Either way it's fun, fun, fun...and you can wear a pretty dress while doing it!

Great, can recommend

I took part in two of their events (College of Wizardry 8 and 10). Even when I had no clue about larp, they made participating incredibly easy and could be reached very quickly. I felt welcome, safe and had a lot of fun. Would recommend also the community around the events.

Don't miss out!! This should be on your bucket list!

Excellent experience! Attended CoW as first time larper a few years ago and haven't stopped going! Can be a culture shock at first for a first time larper (and for an American), but everyone is so welcoming it took me no time to assimilate :)
Don't miss this opportunity, ESPECIALLY if you love all things wizard!!!

Convention of Thorns - terrific!

I had loved World of Darkness storytelling games, especially Vampire the Masquerade, since I was 13. I jumped at the chance when I heard about the first installment of Convention of Thorns through social media, and made sure to score a ticket, which subsequently took me on the whirlwind journey of a lifetime.

I received a character concept that allowed me to form a multitude of interesting in-game contacts. The three days of diving headfirst into the historical night-time magic also offered me such a level of immersion that I had never, during my 19 years of live-roleplaying, experienced.
The breathtaking, awe-inspiring Zamek Ksiaz castle and grounds made for the perfect backdrop for live-role playing drama, intrigue, action and intense emotions. The free time, day-play and improvisation workshops, as well as community breakfast, lunch and dinner gave ample chances to form lifelong friendships around the world.

Would I recommend Convention of Thorns to others? Absolutely. Being a part of it felt like a complete, thrilling privilege that I wouldn't have wanted to miss for anything!

I had a great time on CoW

I had a great time on CoW. I had never done a larp before and me and a friend signed up as a fun thing to do. It was one of the most adventures, exusting and magical weekends ever. The Dziobsk is so professional, didn't matter we had never larped before we got all the information we needed and introduction and warm up seminars before the whole thing got going. So it was all a success

College Of Wizardry

As a person suffering from depression and anxiety, I was very nervous about larping for the first time but eventually decided to attend College of Wizardry. The Larp was amazingly organised, completely immersive so much that sometimes my character is someone I miss very much and I sometimes want to talk about my Demonology Teacher when other people bring up school. There was just so much love and reality all around me - and on top of that, everyone was not only very nice but also understanding, inclusive, tolerant. Even more than just immersed in a whole new world, I felt completely safe regarding the people around me, which is something I never had before. I knew I could come to anyone, no matter if I knew them or not, and ask them for help and they'd do that. It doesn't matter if you are a newcomer to larping, an old veteran, if you suffer from anxiety or not - Dziobak LARP Studios not only create wonderful adventures but make sure that every participant is safe.

An innovative and wildly creative collective who have moved larp in new directions

Dzobiak LARP studios is an innovative and wildly creative collective who have moved larp (live action role play) in new directions with projects such as College of Wizardry and Road trip. I've participated in both of these and they were among the most memorable experiences of my life. They keep moving the bar forward, with new projects and new directions. Very responsive to feedback, lovely people to work with. Highly recommend

Convention of Thornes

At first I was slightly intimidated by Convention of Thornes. I heard about Vampire of course, but was not familiar with the World of Darkness at all. There is simply so much to know about this world, so I wasn't sure if I would be able to hold up against all the people playing in it for a long time.
All my worries proved to be wrong. There is no reason to be intimidated whether you're new to WoD or even larp. I didn't feel I had any drawback from not being familiar with WoD. I was immersed in a world full of cruel monsters and played my role in a game full of intrigue, politics and struggles for power. I got everything that I was hoping and expecting from a game about vampires.
I would recommend this game to everyone who is even just slightly interested in vampires in general. But even if you're not, this game is about so much more! It's powerful and beautiful. It's the World of Darkness and Nordic Larp merged in a beautiful dance.
On top of it the castle, the players, organizers and the whole game are simply stunning. Definitely would recommend.

Fairweather Manor

Living in a wonderful castle as a real guest at the beginning of the last Century, or in Great War time. Fairweather Manor is a very involving experience in the most amazing larper location I have ever seen. You play your character all the time while you are enjoying the atmosphere and the hospitality. A journey into the past with emotions, dancing and all the details to live it at its best
