Wonderful Scandinavian trip by train and boat

My partner and I had a fabulous two week Scandinavian trip, thank you! Kieran was very helpful in tailoring our trip from London by rail and boat to fit our preferences. He booked us into some great hotels and the Havila cruise was the absolute highlight. Everything was easy and went to plan! The hotels were all within walking distance from the rail stations, and the timings were great (no ridiculously early starts or arriving somewhere at midnight!). Sadly we didn't achieve our dream of seeing the Northern Lights and our husky sledding had to be cancelled due to a blizzard. But the trip was magical nevertheless and we will be back! Absolute highlights included Oslo, the Flamsbana and Flam itself, the fabulous Havila Castor ship & staff and the stunning fjords of Norway. So calming and peaceful.

Can’t recommend this company.

Sadly, I can’t recommend this company based on our recent experience. I’m not one for writing reviews but our recent experience was quite bizarre.

Having booked and paid for a mini break to the Icehotel in Sweden - two weeks before departure - we have just been told the Icehotel / Discover The World cannot honour our booking for next week, without us paying an additional £280 fee to upgrade our already expensive ‘warm room‘ on the final evening to some kind of suite with Sauna - even though we paid for a separate Sauna experience (no option for refund). Four days after we paid for the package in full we were told that the standard room had been assigned to another customer and we had no choice but to pay a supplement for the ‘better’ room or go to a different hotel. In my experience this is not how hospitality works and reflects a disregard for customer satisfaction. It was their issue to resolve and the best they could offer was an alternative overnight location or pay the extra cost. We did not feel our concerns were taken seriously nor was there any genuine attempt to resolve the issue. Granted the DTW representative was polite but at the end of the day our experience has been spoilt. Fortunately we have been told a full refund should be available, but an expensive holiday option should not be this badly organised. Full payment should not be taken without a 100% guarantee of availability.

The accommodation for your holiday was ‘on request,’ and as your booking was a late booking this means we take payment at the time of booking as per our terms and conditions and we requested your room type with the Icehotel. Unfortunately, they did not have this room type available, but they were able to offer an alternative upgraded room which was an additional cost which was offered to you as an alternative or a full refund as we could not secure your original requested room type.

Once again please accept our sincere apologies. We have emailed you regarding your full refund and please let us know if you would like us to talk to you in person and I hope we have the opportunity in future for you to travel with us.

WHAT THE HELL 💛😁

What made my experience great....? Where the hell do i begin. This was my fisrt solo holiday. I initially wanted to go to Finland. Then iceland on a budget. Ben, the legend, was patient with me. While I changed my mind again to a less budgeted trip. Self driving most of it. Which was just INCREDIBLE. the information on the app was exactly what I needed. The map was okay but hey, we all have Google maps! Katla and the whale watching were the only guided tours i done. Holy mackerel! What a few days. I keep crying thinking about the INSANE BEAUTY OF ICELAND. 🥹🥹🥹 THANK YOU DOSCOVER THE WORLD, and BEN, I WILL NEVER GET OVER THIS TRIP!!! 💛

Every part of this process was easy

Every part of this process was easy. Darren and Steph helped us so much. We were never pressured or pushed or hassled. The email responses were quick and helpful. Highly recommend

We have just returned from our 4th Holiday that we have taken with Discover the World and all have been GREAT. As a couple, we feel that they listed to what we wanted from our holidays and then tailored them to our requirements, unlike so many other travel organisations, that try to make you conform to where they want to send you. We definitely recommend them and will holiday with them again in 2025.

Christmas in Lapland package - Faultless!

I booked Sweddish Lapland (grand Arctic hotel) Christmas holiday and it was faultless. I was nervous spending so much on such a precious break which was so important to me, but they gave every bit of re-assurance throughout from receiving ATOL certificate straight after booking, answering requests within a few hours and sending accurate information timely. And the holiday itself was out of this world. Just a small group of 11 (lovely!) people in total on our package in total so excursions felt very personal. there was a rep at the hotel and nothing was too much trouble. Faultless all the way through.

Lapland perfection

We went to Nellim wilderness hotel with Discover the World, flying from London with various activities such as huskies, snowshoeing, reindeer and Santa visit included.

I spent a lot of time with Jo Sehgal during the booking process. Going to Lapland is a huge investment and I was terrified of feeling shortchanged. Jo was very patient during that process - outwardly anyway as I am sure she was exhausted by the constant questions. I can’t compare with other providers but the holiday was perfect for us. Thanks Jo. The hotel really was in the wilderness - we didn’t see another car for about 40 miles on the way from Ivalo airport - and the activities we participated in were amazing. The hotel itself, whilst not flawless, epitomised what we expected Lapland to be - log cabins dotted around, the odd elf skipping round at meals times, set in a snowy forests beside a frozen lake.

A few days before we were due to leave, Finnair went on strike messing up our flights completely which meant we couldn’t get to the resort or back as planned. Discover the world - Michael Wallis - kept us informed throughout, sorted out new flights with a night in helsinki and an extra night at their cost. I was also stunned that when our luggage went on a detour, we got a call from someone else at discover the world updating us on where it was.

All in all, I feel we couldn’t have chosen a better provider. The cost of going to Lapland is mind blowing and I was really concerned about feeling cheated but I didn’t. We had the true holiday of a lifetime and much of that was due to discover the world (and a little bit Santa).

Norwegian trains, boats and planes.

We’d seen TV programmes on great train journeys in Norway and wanted to do them ourselves. We had tried to do this before the pandemic but were unable to do so, although we did get a company to come up with an itinerary.
Earlier this year we decided to resurrect the trip and contacted Discover the World with the itinerary. Freya Mizon managed to replicate the itinerary exactly with the same hotels, trains and ferries. We did the Bergenbanen, Dovrebanen and Nordbanen plus the coastal express ferry services.
The trip was pretty much perfect,
Including the weather, 25 degrees C in the Arctic Circle!
I would definitely recommend Discover the World to anyone who wants a tailor made holiday.

Self Drive Senja and Lofoton Islands Norway - thank you Discover the World

Discover the World are a really great company and Eric and his team are very knowledgeable about all trips/holidays to Scandinavia .We visited Senja Island in Norway ,and the Lofoton Islands. Flying into Tromso and then self drive- its a longish days travel from the UK with a connecting flight., Out of many 2 great hotels were chosen for us Mefjord Brygge in Mefjordvaer in north Senja - great hiking all around ; and Anker Brygge in Svolvaer in Lofoton ; a lovely location with lots to do .The only additional advice to give is; if using ferries to connect the islands be careful about booking and arriving on time - they often have long waits .And secondly avoid speeding - as in Lofoton there are a few police check areas and the fines are very high !! But a brilliant location and breath taking scenery. In June and July there is the midnight sun too. -

Don't be put of by eruptions

Discover the World organised this trip beautifully, from the two nights spent in a great hotel in Reykjavik and the four in a private lodge on Snaefellsnes and the final night deep in the heart of volcano country. The Northern Light Inn - a splendid, one storey, modern building - is just outside of Grindavik, the town evacuated last November after volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. We wondered if we would even get there, and were rerouted along roads unaffected by lava flow and through police check points and across a still-smoking lava field, to find a busy hotel with cheerful staff, lots of guests with children, and a great restaurant. On the hill outside, earth moving vehicles were still working on a lava barrier. It was fascinating - and at no point did we feel unsafe. Great trip with an unexpected twist at the end.

The perfect way to explore Scandinavia

We wanted to explore Scandinavia and found Discover The World who provided the perfect trip by rail and boat. We were able to tailor the trip and add in excursions. They were so helpful and even responded to questions when we’re abroad.

What a fabulous holiday I've just had…

What a fabulous holiday I've just had hiking in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. I even got to see 8 bears including one magnificent grizzly. The organization from booking to completion was spot on. I felt totally looked after, listened to and included, despite being a solo traveller. Everyone was lovely, helpful and friendly. Accommodation was great and it exceeded my expectation. I totally recommend it.

Brilliant Iceland fly drive..thank you

We have just returned from our 3rd Iceland fly drive organized by Eric at DTW . We travelled to the North of Iceland mainly for photography. One of the strengths of DTW's service is that the travel advisors have personal experience and knowledge of the countries they specialize in. They know the accommodation and are able to advise about all aspects of your holiday.
The customer service is brilliant and the support and information during the tailor made planning is outstanding.
Everything worked out as arranged . All the hotels were good and the infomation available from DTW about each area was really helpful. The DTW team rearranged one night's accomodation in view of unexpected snow quickly and efficiently for us.
We absolutely recommend DTW in view of the customer service, having the reassurance of someone on the end of a phone if needed while you are away and the friendliness and expertise offered . Thank you for an amazing fly drive. We returned home with lots of photos and saw some amazing places.

A positive experience from experts who deliver a personalised service

We had a very positive experience with DTW. A great first interaction with the Sales team who created a tour to suit our needs, with a few tweaks, that took away all the planning stress. The app is very thorough and great to refer to. When we had difficulties due to adverse weather, the Ops Team were very supportive in sorting out our rescheduled accommodation, again taking away all the pressure. There were a few hotel choices we were disappointed with and a couple of journey time miscalculations, although overall we enjoyed our road trip thoroughly and would use DTW again. We love that they create personalised trips for independent travellers.

Two Weeks Touring around Iceland

When my wife and I were initially thinking about returning to Iceland for our holiday this year we immediately sought Discover the World's expertise, something we had done several times before.

Although we had an outline plan for our tour, DtW's guidance and detailed local knowledge was invaluable, and from their helping in our initial planning to developing a detailed and cost-effective itinerary, knowing DtW had our backs while we were in Iceland gave us a great sense of confidence and security.

DtW provides a personal and flexible service, tailored to individual needs, We have used this excellent organisation before, and I have no doubt we will use them again.
