Yet another company that will not leave you alone

Codecademy: STOP SENDING ME SPAM

Edit after Codecademy reply: your link takes me to your help pages, there is no way for me to send you an email from there and I will not spend the time chatting with one of your agents.
I have unsubscribed using the link provided in your emails, but as it is usually the case with companies such as yourself, your UNSUBSCRIBE LINK DOES ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
If you would unsubscribe people when they request you to do so, we wouldn't be in this situation.
I will keep leaving you a 1 star review and reporting your spam to the ICO until you finally leave me alone.

Shame on you!

CODECADEMY: Really, WHAT is wrong with you? I don't want you to remove me from your mailing list so that you can resubscribe me again on your own accord when it tickles your fancy.
I have requested that you DELETE ALL MY DETAILS from your system, you have no further use for them!
I don't need to manage my settings, you need to manage your unsubscribe links better, and your whole GDPR compliance approach!
This is very frustrating, the fact that you refuse to delete my details from your system. Note that any further spam will still be met with a 1 star review, a complaint to the ICO, and I will not provide you with my email address details again. IT WILL BE YOUR FAULT FOR FAILING TO REMOVE IT FROM YOUR SYSTEM, FULLY.

Double shame on you!!

Grifty & Spotty Course Material

It's really not a bad place to get *started* learning some programming skills. The formula is good. They teach you a few concepts per section with hands-on exercises, you get to see with your own two eyes what each piece of code does, and you build up to a small project per section where you apply the skills you learn. They have strong tendencies to throw in tangential topics that don't fit, and teach you outdated inefficient methods. But altogether it's a very very good way to get started.

Once you get going though you can see where they started to lose interest. I was working my way through their Python curriculum and was feeling good about it until I got to the object oriented programming lessons. They clearly started phoning it in once the material got harder. The lessons were confusing. They abandoned the whole exercise and working up to a project approach. They used pointless circular explanations of terms and concepts. So I did what you're intended to do, I reached out to their support community of staff experts to try and voice some feedback and get some clarity. These people were wildly uninterested in helping anyone or facing the facts that their material was weak, confusing, and that they had several years worth of evidence in the form of people voicing exactly what I was saying in their forums to prove that it was inadequate. They're very committed to the cardinal sin of teaching anything tech and that's assuming that if it's clear to someone with 10 years experience then it must be clear to everyone. I got occasional bits of help mixed in with snarky dismissive comments from their staff and mostly just got told to go look it up over and over.

Things got contentious enough that I got the ear of one of their moderators and spent a pretty significant amount of time detailing example after example of where the OOP course was failing, and how the forum staff were exacerbating the problem. I must have made at least a little bit of sense because they completely redesigned that whole portion of the program and made it significantly better following the feedback I had given them. I never especially received a thank you or any real acknowledgement that they had conceded that what I was telling them was accurate. I honestly did appreciate that they eventually listened to me, but the way they handled it seemed like theyt genuinely begrudged having to be shown the receipts by a user.

The whole thing took a ton of time and really killed my momentum, so I wanted to put my membership on pause for a bit. I tried cancelling my membership and found out that they had just been auto-renewing and billing without any notice. I tried opening ticket after ticket to get someone to actually cancel my membership and to my astonishment they just ignored it for weeks. I did the only thing I could do and started posting about it on their forums and Discord asking why they were ghosting me and stealing my money. That was the one and only thing that moved the needle. I got a forum moderator... not anyone remotely related to billing to relay a message to me that my membership would be cancelled and my most recent charges would be refunded.

Altogether it's an ok start for a total beginner, but if you want to get anything out of it you're going to have to constantly be holding their feet to the fire to get honest or productive answers. And I absolutely can't deal with any company that plays "nobody's home" when you ask about a billing problem or try to cancel.

Poorly designed class content

Their content is poorly presented and updated. I just took a quiz in which it asked questions for content that was not covered. You go into the forums, and people explain why the quiz content is correct, and explain concepts found nowhere in the lesson. Great - how about teach me it first before quizzing me on it! There are lots of bugs and typos as well. So far all the lessons with videos are from 2018 and woefully out-of-date. I got a 50% discount on my Pro subscription. I would be really upset if I had paid full price.

I was working on a free course and it was going well but returned today to find they have locked the course, even parts I have ALREADY completed to make people pay for the paid version. Very greedy as this course was free before and cheeky as I was in the middle of the course. Not good

By far the most beginner friendly platform to learn programming and I settled for it after trying other platforms such as Udacity and Udemy. Also have good customer service e.g. refunded me when i signed up to Pro instead of Plus by mistake.

They've been stealing my money from my bank account

I cancelled my subscription on May 11, 2022 but codecademy has been charging my account since then. Just noticed it this morning. I sent them screenshots of the cancellation receipt i received via email. Also sent screenshots of the bank charges. They refuse to refund me. They're thieves.

Codecademy, if you're reading this, I regret ever signing up on your website. I highly recommend no one uses them. There are other places to learn. But if you choose to learn from a company that lacks integrity, be ready to be duped.

Takes a multi-faceted, fairly comprehensive approach to teaching.

There are a lot of ways to get started with coding and IT. Many of them are free. You could watch videos on YouTube, buy books, or try one of the various courses and tutorials.

What I like about Codecademy is that it's kind of all of those things in one. A course is separated into sections, which are broken up into lessons, which are broken up into pages. Each page is usually an approachable length, and gives you an actual coding exercise to do that demonstrates the concept it's discussing. You have to at least attempt each exercise before you can move on, but if after a few unsuccessful tries you're still stuck, they automatically offer the solution. Then at the end of every lesson you have a light quiz and a small project that brings all the different pages' concepts together.

All the while, they have an active community (including a forum thread for seemingly every exercise) there to support you, and codespaces you can use for tinkering and trying things out.

It's a slow process. Codecademy's approach is to teach you step by step, so for example what might be a couple of paragraphs in a textbook or tutorial article on arrays would be a whole lesson on CA, with several exercises, a quiz, and a project. For people coming in with a solid foundation or who just prefer a faster-paced curriculum, this will be frustrating. Personally though, I like it.

Will you be learning all the skills you need to operate professionally just by going through CA? I don't know, in most cases maybe not (though their Full-Stack Dev course actually does seem fairly comprehensive). But they will definitely take you from 0 to intermediate in most scenarios if you're patient and disciplined.

Codecademy makes my learning a delight

Codecademy has been an amazing platform for my learning journey. The "Learn PHP" course and Backend Development learning path were brilliantly built, allowing me to dive into practice right away. The gamification of the process and the simplification of hard topics made the learning curve even smoother. I was extremely satisfied when I contacted their support team with a billing request, as they went above and beyond to help me. Overall, I highly recommend Codecademy to anyone looking to learn how to code or improve their skills. Thanks, Codecademy!

The ideal place to start till intermediate levels

I am graduating in computer science, codecademy is a great place to start programming in new languages and learn their scope. however, at best it will be able to push you up to the intermediate level, the rest is up to you. From there I recommend advanced books and project development.

Not perfect but pretty good!

I am using Codecademy to learn Swift and it's the first time I am really putting an effort into learning how to code, not completely from scratch but pretty close.

Overall I think it is a very complete course that starts with the Basics and progresses in a logical way through the the basic building blocks of Swift and Xcode as well as some good background info about more generic coding skills and history. I do find that navigating the course can be pretty confusing at times as well as the way variables are being named in some occasions.

Once I started building the two apps everything really started to come together and make more sense. Overall this would be the course I would recommend when someone would ask me what the best place was to start to learn how to code.

Tip: you absolutely need use chatGPT in case you need more information on a certain topic or when you are stuck trying to code, it's invaluable for beginners that are learning to code!

ALL READING, NO CODING

Agreeing 100% with what Tim shared. This content is literally all text. There is almost no coding. The lessons are 90% text and 10% coding. There are quizzes at the end of each "lesson" and there are maybe 10-15 different "steps" you go through to complete each lesson. By the time you've completed a lesson: you've spent well over an hour and can't remember how the lesson started to complete the quiz. This is an extremely inefficient way of learning. Coding needs to be hands-on, not read BS for an hour and then code for 5 minutes.

Purchasing the subscription to this is one of my biggest mistakes of all time. I've since found an app called MIMO which, although not great, is literally 10x faster to learn with that Codecademy.

I would HIGHLY recommend that ANYONE try to complete a free course before purchasing ANY level of subscription. Additionally, I would HIGHLY recommend you simply look at the developer documentation for any programming language you are wanting to learn because you can learn much faster from that than you can from Codecademy's antiquated, slow process.

100% do not recommend this as a learning tool.
