I have been a member for about 40 years paying for 4 family members laterally 3 members.
I do think the service has sadly gone down. I haven't used the service luckily for about 25 years. So was not up to date with process. When I called for a referral the lady was lovely, sympathetic & reassuring.
I went to see a consultant the other day, he wanted to perform a quick examination/test/procedure whilst I was laying being examined. I had explained i thought I needed to call for anything not on my authorised list. He said it would be quick & help which other tests/scans i needed. I was then given a list of 2 tests I needed. I was very concerned how much they would cost. It took an hour in the hospital trying to get codes and costs (Nuffield staff we're absolutely wonderful). Said it was only Benenden that had this complicated process. I eventually got "approximate " costs. I was very stressed by this point. I rang Benenden to ask for help. Sadly I got a rather rude, arrogant young man who told me I should have called for authorisation of the £167 test half way through the apt!! I said i could hardly do this whilst in with a consultant. His off hand reply was "it only takes 2 minutes to call! "He then told me I could not have of the advised tests as would take me over the £2500. A scan was authorised but not the camera. He said if I had read the letter I would know. I said I had read the letter. By this point I was crying with absolute frustration. My husband wanted to take over the phone as he was disgusted at how I was been dealt with.
I totally accept this service is a help to getting diagnosed rather than having to wait on the NHS but his manner had no warmth or empathy & was arrogant. I wish I had saved my £45 a month for 40 years into a service plan
I notice my app has not updated with details of the extra £167 I was allowed,making me now worry if he has added this.

Easy to make initial appointment with consultant but I had to keep checking with Benenden to ensure that I was covered for each procedure needed pre-op as well as for the operation

Benenden now seem more picky about the conditions they will help with. I found the app to be very confusing. I was approved for medical diagnosis for shortness of breath and given a budget of £2500. I was charged £349 to see a consultant and he said I should have an echo cardiograph £352 a sleep apnea test £852 and a lung test but I couldn’t have the lung test because I had to pay £297 for my outpatient results that was a telephone call. These items cost £1821. If you exceed £2500 you have to pay the excess. Each time I rang I was given different priced so I chose to not have the lung test.
