Autovia does not respect its customers (SCAM)
My family and I (wife and 2 kids) arrive at the Autovia counter situated in the Rome Flumicino airport on May 23rd 2026 to claim the car that I had rented and paid for from Montreal, Canada. I give the teller the car rental information, the teller checks it out and tells me that the car that i had reserved and paid for (a 12 days period) was given to another customer...I tell him that the car that I wanted was already paid and reserved for the period of my stay in Italy...The teller says that I was late to clain my car (my reservation was for 10:30 but arrived at 12:30 at the reservation counter due to the chaos at the airport once we arrived) and mentions that he gave it to someone else. The individual tells me that I only have one option and that option is to pay an extra 368$ for a totally different category of car that I had reserved. I tried to reason with the gentelman, but he refused to listen to me. The gentelman was very arrogant. My wife and kids, tired after an 8 hours flight, were panicking because of the situation. I asked to speak to his supervisor, the teller tells me that he was not available. I paid the extra 368$ and left with a sour taste in my mouth...I believe that i need to get compensated for the extra money that I paid for. It`s illogical that a car that has been reserved and paid for for a 12 day period to be given to someone else...it`s a scam.

Misleading information and poor…
Misleading information and poor customer service. Before returning the car in Florence, I was told (in writing) that there were no ZTL restrictions to reach the train station. Two months later, I received a ZTL fine from the Comune of Florence. Autovia gave misleading replies and then ignored my complaint.
I was also forced to buy premium insurance due to an alleged requirement for an International Driving Permit, which I later found was false (confirmed later with another rental agency). The car had over 100,000 km and was average at best.
If you have alternatives, choose a reputable international rental company instead.
Easy rental at a good rate

Review: Autvia Car Rental - A terrible and Disappointing Experience
Review: Autvia Car Rental - A terrible and Disappointing Experience
We arrived at the airport in Italy and approached the Autovia car rental desk. The clerk asked for our passports, and as soon as she identified us as Israelis, she did everything she could to prevent us from taking the car, claiming we didn't have an international driver's license.
The Israeli license is international, and there is no problem renting a car with it. She also made sure we couldn't rent a car at the desk next to yours.
We had to go to a more distant desk, where we received kind and full service from "Sicily Car Rental." We were forced to pay an additional 700 Euros.
The clerk is an antisemitic racist who did everything to ruin our vacation. Autovia. It is a racist company and is not recommended for Israelis.
Reply.
First of all, I'm not your customer, and I would never be a customer of a company that steals its “customers'” money. And have an “Italian law” for Israelis and an “Italian law” for non-Israelis.
This company is anti-symmetric and racist, with different laws for different nationalities.
I did write to the company as they suggested.
Of course, never got a reply…
This is what I wrote:
“Everything you wrote to me in response to my review regarding the car rental is incorrect.
An Israeli driver's license is written in English capital letters.
If, as you claim, Italian law requires an additional international license beyond the existing one, how is it that all other rental companies in Italy accept the standard international Israeli license? We regularly visit Italy and rent cars with the same license without any issues for years.
Why did this problem only come up with your company? And how was it possible for us to rent a car with the same license at the counter right next to yours?
You caused us extra expenses that put our bank account into a negative balance and led to aggravation and stress.
The clerk's attitude at the counter was beyond criticism; she did everything possible to stop us from renting a car, even at the nearby counter.
Therefore, we demand a full refund of the entire amount you took from us, without delay.
Thank you very much for the worst experience we have ever had with car rental.”

⭐ 1 star – Totally unacceptable experience with Autovia Fiumicino
Absolutely terrible service.
After returning the car in perfect condition, I was charged €371.50 without any notice or invoice. Later they claimed it was because I returned the car only two hours late, which is absurd and completely disproportionate.
On top of that, they refused my debit card for the deposit and forced me to buy an extra insurance (€276) even though I had already booked the All Inclusive protection through Booking.com.
This company is dishonest and unprofessional, taking advantage of travelers with hidden fees and zero transparency.
Avoid Autovia at all costs.

🚨 THIEVES
🚨 THIEVES! 🚨
They took our money and never gave us the car. No service, no refund, no answers — just lies and silence. Stay far away from these scammers. Absolute disgrace!
I read your response and will say more: your customer service said they are sorry, but you are doing this all the time. I’m stupid I didn’t check reviews before. How many people you robbed. We are going to the laser and will do a case as what you are doing to people is pure shame

Mediocre at best and watch out for the following
Booked this via rentalcars.com. Rented a car for 8 days with a pickup at Fiumicino and returning at Bologna.
I wouldn’t say this was the best customer service but also wouldn’t say it was horrible. They did a good job of upselling some breakdown insurance.
Watch out for: You need to be aware of this before booking with Autovia as it doesn’t include breakdown cover you get from better rental companies. You also need to be aware the cover provided is crap. I actually had a need to use this at one of the locations on the way up to Bologna where we stayed a night. All I can say is if you don’t speak fluent Italian, you will struggle to make use of this. You also need to be aware there are significant limitations to the cover provided by the ‘insurance’ you purchase. In short, don’t waste your money. The people at the counter are just trying to sell you something which is utterly useless.
Make sure you spend the extra time checking everything in detail when picking up your car as the folks prepping the car don’t take the level of care required. This includes things like making sure the right level of fuel is marked, etc.
I also received a vehicle where a cover for the fuse box on the inside was missing, which is very unusual as I’ve always had reasonably newer rental cars with other providers. The cars with Autovia are dated and aren’t the best kept so bear that in mind when factoring in the overall price. It’s cheaper for a reason.
My suggestion would be to go to another provider that might seem expensive but when you consider everything in totality, the price you pay for a rental with Autovia is a rip off.

Prepaid booking refused at pickup
Prepaid booking refused at pickup. Staff claimed my mBank credit card was from a “neobank” and said they had “issues with mBank in the past.” This internal rule was never disclosed in the terms.
mBank is a licensed commercial bank with physical branches in Poland (very easy to verify), and the same card was accepted immediately by Europcar at the same location.
Be warned: Autovia may apply hidden internal policies and refuse service even if you fully comply with the stated requirements. Risk of losing your prepaid booking.

Avoid these scammers at all costs
Avoid these scammers at all costs. When signing the contract, there was no clear information that the lack of a credit card (the terms only mention that a credit card is required, but nowhere does it state that debit cards are not accepted or that using one would trigger an additional mandatory cost) would result in being forced to pay for a so-called “mandatory insurance” of €336 — even though I had already purchased insurance at the time of booking. Such information must be presented clearly during the conclusion of the contract, not hidden in piles of paperwork.
Additionally, the deposit amount remains the same even after paying for this “insurance”, which shows that the insurance itself is just another scam. Of course, if you try to cancel the contract or change the driver to someone older (which would reduce the forced insurance to €270), you are told you must cancel the existing booking and sign a new one — automatically losing your original payment. This whole procedure blatantly violates Directive 2011/83/EU and Directive 2005/29/EC.
As if that was not enough, the car was dirty both inside and outside, and yet the company threatens heavy penalties if you don’t return it clean. Like with many of these scam operations, nobody comes out to show you the car at pick-up or to do a proper damage inspection, clearly hoping that, after being pressured into paying several hundred euros on the spot and possibly arriving with a delayed flight, you will forget to check.
When returning the car, despite having paid for two separate insurances, they tried to claim there were new scratches — which were in fact nothing more than road dust that wiped away with a finger. These thieves will do anything to extort more money for damages that do not exist, or were already there.
And to top it off, when I attempted to resolve this matter amicably, I only received an automatic reply that “my case will be reviewed soon,” after which they stopped all communication.
Therefore, I strongly encourage every cheated customer to report their case to the European Consumer Centre (ECC) and the Italian Competition and Consumer Authority (Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato – AGCM), and to consider a collective lawsuit.
EDIT. You even have problem with reading, like I wrote there is no information about hidden cost if you dont have credit card which should be given due to law and you make ppl pay for insurance that you also show its scam. And I have proof that there was no information about additional costs in case of using debit card in booking voucher and its only one additional cost that isnt mentioned there. Of course I'm gonna report you to ECC and AGCM with proofs that I have on you

We booked a car with Autovia ten days…
We booked a car with Autovia ten days in advance and purchased full-coverage insurance from a third party. We arrived at Rome Fiumicino Airport with every document listed in the confirmation e-mail.
At the Autovia desk the agent immediately began pushing their own insurance. When we explained we already had full coverage, they switched tactics: they claimed my credit card had “no chip,” which is absurd. The confirmation e-mail only states that the card must be in the main driver’s name and that Visa and MasterCard are accepted—nothing about a chip requirement.
They then told me that if I paid an extra €252 for their own full-coverage policy I could skip the deposit and my card would suddenly “work.” I checked with other rental counters nearby; all confirmed my card was perfectly acceptable. When I returned to the Autovia desk with this information, they simply ignored me and insisted the card could not be used—rude, dismissive, and clearly deceptive.
Their scheme derailed our entire itinerary. Our non-refundable hotel in Florence had to be cancelled because we could no longer get there.
Autovia is not a company to be trusted; they will invent reasons to force you into buying their insurance even when you are already fully covered.

Truly terrible experience
Truly terrible experience. When we came to pick up the car they did not have a 7 seater which we had booked so tried to charge us for a nine seater. Then they said they could not even honour that offer. We ended up having to cancel and rebook with another provider. AVOID at all costs this company are not to be trusted.

I have not yet received any…
UPDATE: Until this date, I have not received my deposit back.
I have not yet received any confirmation of the return of my rental car. At the drop-off, no issues were mentioned, but I still have not received my deposit back. I have sent my message to several email addresses (vehiclecheck @autovia.it
, customercare @autovia.it
, fiumicino @autovia.it
) but have not received any substantive reply. I also tried to reach them by phone, like 20 times, but nobody answered. If I receive my deposit back and a confirmation of the return soon, I am willing to update this review.

They are the worse
They are the worse, I've send them emails and never answer , they charge me more than it should be , because they have bad communication between the colleagues, and they haven't returned the deposit, send me mail if you want to know more about this company , and I will send you the email I sent them, with the evidences of their mistakes
They are tragic , after renting the car I read the comments on the Internet
Edit after their reply on 20/08 I picked the car with 7/8 fuel and I returned it to 7.5/8 fuel after I asked the customer if I have to return it to 8/8 and he said you have to return it to the same amount of fuel! Your responses are very slow...Yes I will edit my review after my case will get to an end!
