Website too complex for a non-techie

I find the website interface to be not the most user-friendly. For example, a document popped up showing what my grandfather did during WWI. I had a quick read, but the next day, try as I might, I was unable to find it in the system. The same thing just the other day, when an ancient photo of my dad with a group of university buddies popped up, I was unsure of how to find it again.

Results First Please

I sent my sample in during late January. As soon as it was received by the lab I started to get regular emails about buying services I wasn't ready to use, as I didn't have my results yet. Every week it seemed was some limited time offer, like 3 months of World Deluxe for $20. Great. Please offer me that once I get my results.

Today I'm posting this review because I just received an email from Ancestry asking me to leave a review and rating. So this is it. But since I don't have my results yet I can't give it more than a 2 star rating.

I'll post another review ... once I get my results and have some time to explore.

Hi there, Desaray. We understand how disappointing and confusing it can be when the results don't seem to align with what you know about your family.

When it comes to DNA matches, it is important to note that while the DNA itself is factual, the way names appear in your list depends entirely on who has taken a test. If a name you recognize shows a 1% match, this indicates that the person is likely a very distant cousin (around the 3rd to 5th cousin range). If you are looking for a close relative, such as a father or sibling, they would typically share between 25% and 50% of your DNA. If those close individuals have not yet submitted a DNA sample to our database, they will not appear in your match list.

Regarding your paternity status, DNA matching is the most accurate tool for this, but it requires both parties to have tested. If your results are unexpected, it can sometimes point to "hidden" branches of a family tree or instances where the biological lineage differs from the recorded paper trail.

scammers!!!!!!

I’m adopted???? 😅😅😅

This company is a big-time scammer. Most of the information they provide is wrong. At the beginning of January I sent back a kit to learn more about my background. At the same time, I took a real DNA test with another company.

I actually received the results from the other DNA test much faster than from Ancestry. The results were also very different.

In my opinion, Ancestry is not reliable. Please friends, don’t waste your money on their services!

Hi there, Jolanta. Thanks for your feedback. While it can be shocking to receive results that differ from another company or your own expectations, these discrepancies are typically due to the different reference panels and proprietary algorithms each service uses to analyze genetic markers.

Ancestry utilizes one of the world's largest databases to provide its estimates, and while our standard 6–8 week processing window may be longer than some, it ensures the high-quality analysis required for our specific system.

If your results suggest a lineage you didn't expect, we recommend looking at your DNA Matches—real people you share genetic material with—as they provide the most concrete evidence of your biological connections. We assure you that your results are based on your unique genetic code, and we are happy to help you navigate these findings to better understand your background.

Reply from Ancestry

Hi there, William. We sorry to hear that you feel your results are incorrect; it is incredibly frustrating to invest time and money into something that doesn't align with what you know to be true.

To clarify how this works, we determine your results by comparing your unique genetic markers to a reference panel of thousands of individuals with deep, documented roots in specific regions. While this science is highly accurate at identifying where your DNA matches a specific population, it is still an estimate that can be refined as our database grows and technology improves.

It is also important to remember that because of the way DNA is randomly inherited, you may not have received certain genetic markers from every branch of your family tree, even if those ancestors were definitely there. If the broad regions seem off, the most concrete way to verify your results is by looking at your DNA Matches—these are real people you share DNA with. If you recognize these matches, it confirms that your sample was processed correctly.

We value your feedback and are committed to scientific accuracy as we continue to update our estimates.

Family oral history

based upon family oral history, my heritage was well known. This DNA test only confirmed it

28 February 2026

Reply from Ancestry

Hi there, David. It is quite common for initial DNA results to confirm exactly what you already knew through your family’s oral history, especially when those traditions have been accurately passed down through generations.

While it might feel like the test didn't reveal anything "new," confirming your known heritage is actually the vital first step in ensuring your research is based on a solid biological foundation. Many of our members find that the true discovery begins after this confirmation, as they use their results to connect with DNA matches—often distant cousins—who can provide new stories, photos, and details that oral history alone may have missed.

We appreciate you choosing us to validate your family’s legacy.

I searched my great grandfather 3 generations ago. Then I searched myself, not data. I put myself in as 1730 and nothing shows. Logged in again and it showed me as living in the 1700's. They don't know shit and charge you for it, so anyone that searches for the family name, lol there I will be and you paid for false information. Garbage

Reply from Ancestry

Hi there, Kevin. Thanks for your feedback. It sounds like there’s been a bit of a mix-up in how the family tree software interprets dates.

When you enter yourself with a birth year of 1730, the system treats that as a factual historical record for your tree. Because our search engine is designed to find records that match the data you provide, it is now reflecting that "fact" back to you and other researchers.

The information on your tree is controlled by you; the system doesn't "know" your birth date is incorrect until you edit it. To fix this so you don't appear as a 300-year-old ancestor to others, you can simply go to your Tree, click on your Profile, and edit the Birth Date to your actual year. Once that is corrected, the "false information" will disappear, and the system will begin looking for records that actually match your generation.

We understand that navigating the tree builder can be a bit confusing at first, but once those dates are accurate, the search tools will work much better for your research.

I thought I was Scottish!

I grew up thinking I was a stout and stubborn Scotsman! I was even told that our grand family came from Inverness, and fought with Bonnie Prince Charlie. Then I find out sadly, but interestingly enough that I am more Irish and English with a touch of Scottish thrown in to make the stew taste better. So be it. Still amazing. The traits were interesting. A lot of it was bang on with me personally. Can't wait to see my wife's results. Should be fascinating to see if all their bragging about being Vikings is founded in truth or not.
