This is essentially a scam targetting children and parents. The competition isn't really a competition and just a way for the parent company Bonacia Ltd to get parents to buy a book that is essentially buying a slot in the printed book without realising. Have spoken to other parents.

Speaking Out as a Victim of the ‘Young Writers’ Vanity Publishing Scam

Hi Muhammed,

Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns. We take feedback seriously and would like to take this opportunity clarify a few points about how our competitions and publications run.

First and foremost, there is absolutely no obligation to purchase a book for a child to have their work published. In fact, only around 30–35% of families choose to order a copy. To ensure that every published student has the opportunity to see their work in print regardless of whether a purchase is made, we provide at least one complimentary copy to the participating school.

We would also like to clarify that publication is not the same as winning a competition. We do not describe published students as “winners” in our communications unless they have been selected as an actual prize winner. Prize winners are chosen through a separate independent judging process from a shortlist of published entries and may receive awards such as iPads, vouchers, and other prizes. No purchase is ever required to be considered for or to win a prize, just permission to publish.

Our aim is to provide young people with a platform to showcase their creativity and to encourage a love of writing. We deliberately publish a higher proportion of entries than many traditional competitions because our mission is to be inclusive and give as many children as possible the opportunity to experience the pride of seeing their work in print. Entries are assessed against age-appropriate criteria such as creativity, imagination, originality, use of language, and interpretation of the theme.

We understand that some people may disagree with our model, but we reject the suggestion that it is a scam. We are transparent about the publication process, there is no requirement to purchase, copyright remains with the young author, and participation in prize judging is never dependent on a purchase.

We appreciate the opportunity to clarify these points and remain committed to inspiring young writers and celebrating their achievements.

Should you wish to discuss this further please do not hesitate to reach out on 01733 890 066 and I will be more than happy to answer any questions.

Have a lovely day.

Best Wishes,
Emma

Support with Parental Communication

I needed support with parental communication because I had some parents who were finding it difficult to navigate the young writer's website to give permission for their child to have their poem published. Lily was prompt in responding to me and supported me entirely through the process. Thank you!

Excellent customer service

I had an issue with a delivery and reached out to Young Writers to sort it out. They responded really quickly and were friendly and professional throughout. You could tell they were genuinely focused on resolving the problem rather than just giving a standard reply. Issue sorted with no fuss, great experience overall!
